We loved our stay at The Sea Dragon. The owner, Ba, and his wife were super lovely and very helpful. The room had an ocean view. The beds were hard, but we found them really comfortable to sleep on. Breakfast was incuded in the price, it was simple, and came with fresh fruit each day plus delicious Vietnamese coffee! Yum. 
We hired bikes through them at the same cost as anywhere else on the island, which was very convenient. We also booked a tour of ha long Bay through them, (which was good fun!) and after shopping around the island, found them to have the cheapest bus transfer prices back to Hanoi - so we booked that through them too. Its nice to know they are there to help, rather than to swindle you for extra $$$.
Right across the road from the hotel is Yummy Restaurant. Which was some of the best Vietnamese food we ate in Cat Ba!
Overall, a fantastic stay. Would totally stay with them again (just to see Ba's lovely welcoming smile!)

A wonderful stay

Great option in Cat Ba town.  Location is perfect, as it is off the main noisy street on small road.  But super close to everything.  Good views of harbor.  Quiet at night.  Room is very big (I have seen maybe 100 properties in VN), it is clean, and had kettle and small fridge.  Bathroom is large and everything works well.  Overall room and lobby and halls are very clean and in good repair.  The beat part is the owner family - super nice and speaking decent English.  Good free breakfast (although I suggested to them to offer some VN options). Restaurant has great menu in both Eng and Viet and prices are very low for this tourist area.    This is my second trip to Cat Ba and I will come back to this hotel only in future.  Great place!

Great value in great location

And the hot chocolate is also nice. 
We walked in the sea dragon hotel, because the hotel we actually booked was dirty and wet. The very kind woman at the sea dragon hotel reception helped us instantly and we could stay for 3 nights. 

Clean, fine beds (a little bit harder mattress), central, friendly staff, variety in breakfast (the banana pancakes are my delicious advice)

Only thing to remark, is the loud music at night time from the city which isn’t the hotels fault but quite uncomfortable for sensitive people

BEST BANANA PANCAKES EVER

We stayed here a few weeks ago and couldn't get over how this place was run! We've spent many months in Asia now and understand some cultural differences, however this was one of the worst run hotels we styed at! 

PROS:
- Hotel location is great if you want to party at night. 
- Our room was very spacious, and located on a higher floor.
- There's an elevator in the hotel.
- The free fruits plate with the breakfast was delicious!

CONS
- Every night you have to listen to bass coming from a nearby club until midnight! 
- The free breakfast only has a few options, most of which looked horrible. (we have food allergies and weren't able to eat any of the food on the menu, but our friends all told us that all but one of the plates were awful). 
- They advertise free coffee with breakfast however 2 of the 3 mornings we were staying there we weren't able to get any since it was empty (being there 30+ minutes before the end of breakfast time both times). Tthe first morning we advised the staff of it being empty while the second morning the staff watched us try one at a time to get coffee with no luck, and both mornings we had the same results - nothing. They didn't refill it or anything, just acknowledged it was empty.)
- The room was dirty, there was a hole in the wall in the bathroom (could see outside) and the "sea view" actually means you can see the bay if you look past the empty lot that's half a garbage field.
- The staff... Other than the lady who checked us in who was lovely, the rest of them just didn't seem to care! Empty coffee in the morning for breakfast, walked in into our bedroom while we were in bed without knocking.... the list is long, but they just didn't care! Not only was there no "sorry" or at least them trying to fix situations, but they actually made it clear our presence was bothersome to them. As we checked out, the guy at reception actually saw me fall down the steps and sprain my ankle, only to look back down at his movie! Never came over to ask if I was okay or offer ice or anything! (Thankfully it only took me a week before the swelling went down...)

All in all it did the job, as a place to lay our head at night, but I would highly recommend you consider booking elsewhere if at all possible before coming here!

Avoid if possible  - Dirty hotel with careless staff

Please listen to me when I say do not come to this hotel.
We paid for a room via last minute .com and were refused entry when we arrived, the reasoning was they felt the site didn't charge enough for the room and wanted more...
The price they wanted was more the double what we had paid already which wasn't exactly modest in the first place compared to other places of a similar standard and in even better locations. 
This would have been our 3rd stay in Cat Ba Island and the other two places were great; friendly, welcoming and helpful, as was our accommodation in other parts of Vietnam. 
Unfortunately I was suffering with a foot injury due to an illness and just wanted a place to lay my head, hence the last minute booking as we had planned to move on originally. Due to the situiaom I even tried to pay extra just to get in but was refused still and wants even allowed into the hotel lobby (if you can call it that).
From what we could see the hotel was not comparable to the photos displayed online either, where as other places were exactly as expected. 
I felt a racial tension from the moment I arrived at this establishment which was a shame as I hadn't felt that anywhere else. 
I do not blame last minute .com, or the Vietnamese people of Cat Ba, but solely blame the staff of Sea Dragon Hotel. 
We spoke to other travellers about the place and were warned it was 'dodgy' in their words, and to try other places with other travellers having similar issues. 
It amazes me what ratings this hotel has on all the booking platforms as they are far from accurate.
