The hotels coffee shop was excellent, it is opposite the Blue Mosque, so perfect to just pop in for a cool drink.  The staff were very friendly and they couldn't do enough for you.  One waiter Saffet was the loveliest gent and such a happy soul who made our experience.

Great Coffee Shop

Have your coffee while viewing the boats on the Bosphorus and the Blue Mosque from wrap around windows on the 5th floor.  Chef Gulsum and Ahmet provide an amazing buffet with delicious Turkish and American breakfast dishes.  Yesterday we took 3 walks from our hotel exploring this unique neighborhood.  The hotel is old but so worth it.

Alzer Hotel, located just across from Blue Mosque, is a charming place in a perfect location. It's almost more of an inn, in a converted private residence. The front desk staff are all wonderful and extremely helpful. Misut really went above and beyond to make sure we maximized our stay and saw and ate what we wanted.  The entry is through a restaurant and cafe, and there's a nice seating area in the lobby.  The rooftop breakfast bar is also charming though don't expect anything elaborate. Glitches: taxi drivers won't be able to find the place based on the address. They cannot drive straight to the door. You just have to get dropped at Sultanahmet Square, and walk a few meters.   Climate control is central, cannot be controlled by room, but it was fine. The room we had was small and without the view we expected, but it was also just fine. Overall: great base camp for a couple days in Istanbul.

Charming in a perfect location across from Blue Mosque

We booked a suite for three adults at The Alzer Hotel five months in advance for a five night stay in the third week of February 2024.  We tried to book directly with the hotel but they referred us to Sun Travel Agency (aka Best Travel).  In hindsight I can only guess why they did not book us directly; read on.  Because of the referral we booked hotel, driver, and guides through Sun Travel. The travel agent did not want a credit card but wanted us to transfer cash directly to a personal bank account in Istanbul which we later discovered was in the name of the driver assigned to us!  Banks here in Canada would not complete the transfer with the limited information provided (e.g. no full name and incomplete street address) and the agent finally accepted a credit card.  Two weeks before our arrival we tried to confirm our reservation with The Alzer but they referred us back to the agent at Sun (aka Best) Travel.  Despite repeated requests we had not received a receipt for our deposit and when we again requested one the travel agent sent a digital photo of a “receipt” which showed only the amount.  It was from a blank receipt book and did not identify the agency or indicate the hotel we had booked; we had no proof of our reservation.  The agency provided our transfer from airport to hotel and required us to pay our driver in full for transfer and hotel before check-in.  Upon arrival at The Alzer only minutes later our suite was not available; there had been an “accident” with the current occupants and they could not be moved. The Alzer moved us to a lesser hotel which was dingy and which we declined.  Other reviews show this isn’t the first time The Alzer has done a “bait and switch;” two reviews on Google within the past year describe remarkably similar situations.  Coincidentally, or not, our room rate at The Alzer had tripled between time of booking and check in.  

The agent from Sun Travel moved us again to a clean, but very worn hotel where the rooms were minuscule and the wiring posed an electrical hazard.  We stayed  there for the full five nights but the travel agent refused to adjust our bill for staying in a much, much, cheaper and less well situated hotel despite The Alzer being unavailable. 

The bottom line: we paid in full for a five night stay at The Alzer and ended up in a clean but cheap hotel.   Someone pocketed the difference at our expense.  You connect the dots.  We definitely do not recommend The Alzer or Sun Travel.

Hugely Disappointing

1. location is 10/10
2. Small size hotel opp to Blue Mosque
3. Choose the rooms facing the Blue Mask . In the night the lighting is magnificent on the Mosque.
4. Few Indian Restaurant around. Avoid Bombay Masala
5. The reception guys will pursue the moment you step inside, about the Bosphorous Cruise , Day tour etc.
Please dont book in hurry z take your own time and negotiate outside as well .
They come down to 30 Euros per person also . In my opinion this cruise is over rated and not worth.
6. Lift is very small so be prepared to  use stairs at times.
7. All touristic places are near by so it save your time , energy and money.

Очень советую этот отель, все на высшем уровне. Отдельное спасибо, хочу выразить официанту Ахмету. Очень позитивный человек, который каждый день нас заряжал положительной энергией. Еще хочу выразить благодарность шеф-повару Гульсум, каждый день были разнообразные завтраки и очень вкусные. Спасибо за чистоту и гостеприимство.

I highly recommend this hotel, everything is at the highest level. I would like to express special thanks to the waiter Akhmet. A very positive person who charged us with positive energy every day. I also want to express my gratitude to chef Gulsum, every day the breakfasts were varied and very tasty. Thank you for the cleanliness and hospitality.

Alzer Otel

Despite the initial setback, Mr. Omar, the hotel supervisor, was very apologetic and compensated us with a Hippodrome room. The Alzer Hotel is very impressive being in an excellent location, and it has a beautiful view of the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia. All of these monuments are within walking distance from the hotel. In addition, the staff are very friendly and accommodating. The hotel is clean and well-maintained.  We enjoyed our stay and had a wonderful time in Istanbul. We look forward to coming back one day and staying at the hotel.
