We found the hotel to be very pleasant we stayed for 2 nights it's right next to the ferry port so yes there isn't the best view out of the balconies but for the price of you want spectacular room views expect to pay at least triple this!it cost us $90 for 2 nights breakfast included was good.the building itself is beautiful old stonetown style the staff all so helpful gave us a safe in the office for free.the room was pleasant with fan and aircon which was a blessing after a hot days exploring but it was a little noisy to have on at night it's probably an old unit.beds comfortable bathroom basic but all we needed.dont expect luxury here but it's only a base for getting ready and sleeping in in a place like tone town who wants to sit in their room all day go out and see the wonderful sights the incredible place has to offer!atm over the road and mercury a bar is just after the ferry entrance everything in walking distance we would use again.

Good bad for stonetown on a budget

I just got back from a vacation in Zanzibar with a group. Reading the reviews about this hotel I thought it was bad. Actually to me and to others it's not bad. It's not extra luxurious but nice. The reception is obviously very nice and clean. Basic but clean rooms with private bathroom. Good breakfast and excellent location because it's very close to the port and the center. Of course you don't have to think about taking a vacation entirely in this hotel but as a point of support for me it was good.

discreet hotel

Excellent welcome at reception from Christina, if only the rest of the staff made as much effort. The room was clean and basic with a fan and Ac unit.  Shower was adequate.  This is an old hotel with many original features, overlooking the port, and so convenient if you need to get an early ferry.  The breakfast was basic.  With more effort on the past of the owners this place could be a real gem - excellent value for money.

Everyone loved it, clean, neat, staff, the local restaurant, everything neat, the food tasty and fresh, the swimming pool with clean water, the beach not even sandy, but it's not a minus to the hotel, it's probably the best holiday ever!

There was x the optimal location near the port. dirty rooms with mosquitoes and geeks included in the room. some kids found a mouse in the room. breakfast, although guaranteed very early in the morning, was not served.

It's a great location.

The mattress has seen better days - the springs are practically sticking out of the fabric. Linens are torn, water pressure's weak at best, too many mosquitoes in the bedroom and the free breakfast is completely forgettable. The only reason we stayed here was to avoid the dangerous looking touts hounding us.

Stay away from this place

Stayed here for 1 night and would not stay again. The airconditioner worked however was noisy and flooded our balcony each time it was turned on. One bed in our twin room was comfortable enough however the other was terrible with a 'bar' (?) down the middle. The shower was located above the toilet (go figure?!) so wet everything in the bathroom when turned on - thankfully I thought to move the toilet paper out of the way first... Breakfast was a disorganised shambles on the second floor. Staff were required to bring plates of food up from the ground floor to serve and then the dirty crockery etc was piled up on the landing outside of the 'dining room'. Breakfast service was awful. Only positives about this hotel were the free WIFI in the lobby, safe deposit in reception and the fact it is on a main road very close to the ferry terminal so has easy access.

Only thing going is the easy access

We stayed here for one night in July 2013, and it was by far the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. We were travelling in Kenya and Tanzania for a month, and were on a budget, so I have plenty to compare this hotel with. The shower was dreadful, there was no hot water, the aircon was way too noisy, the mosquito net had huge holes, the door didn't feel secure, the shutters on the windows didn't close, and the beds were uncomfortable. In the morning I didn't get all my breakfast - I waited 45 minutes from my omelette and toast but had to leave as my tour was leaving (I never got the rest of the breakfast). I complained to the manager, and initially he didn't say anything in reply. When I asked if he had any reply he clasped his hands together and sarcastically said "I am very very sorry". 

All in all this was a dreadful hotel, other than the location.

Awful. Just awful.

Of the thousands of trips I've made, including staying in campgrounds, hostels, guesthouses, etc... I rarely find rooms so dirty. At first glance the hall is large and quite cozy. Even the rooms are large, the problem is cleaning. The beds are provided only with a sheet covering the mattress, absolutely dirty (counsel sheet). Above the beds there is a shovel, don't start it if you don't want dustbines to spread throughout the room. However, there is also air conditioning, very loud and noisy, but it does exist.

Dirty rooms with impractical bathrooms

Just one night of passage to go to Pemba Island, I woke up at 5 (clearly without breakfast) to take the fast boat (a challenging experience given the big sea and the passengers who were sick) to Pemba Island. In a historic building opposite the harbor. Our second floor room without elevator was nice, but other of our fellow travelers were not so lucky.
