169 Xining Hostel

Clean room, well-located hotel. The breakfast included in a simple bonus for a Kentucky Fried Chicken breakfast 200 meters away. Important: When booking no one informs you that check-in should be done at another hotel on the property, 50 meters away and on another floor....I discovered it totally casually.

Good location

This is just what I need. A clean room, comfy bed, attached bathroom with nice warm water for shower. Thanks to fellow reviewers, I went to no.155 Xining Road for registration n then to the actual room at no.169 Xining Road itself. Contrary to what others commented, it was very quiet although ground floor was abuzz with activities. I enjoyed the stay!

Cozy and clean. 

Located near the busy district of Ximending and almost 2 minutes walk from Ximen MTR station, I highly recommend this place. The restrooms are really clean and the 2-floor loft type accommodation is actually more than what we hoped for a budget place.

Great location! Best location!

It is named a hostel. So do not expect hotel service etc. It is more like Airbnb although its listed on Agoda.
It is pricey for the small room. Toilet is squeezy. Only toilet amenities are provided in the room. Hot water is in the common area for the level and a fridge is placed at the lift for all to share. (not a very good idea although there is a CCTV)
Bed was comfortable though. The room is clean and neat. Security Access card is required to get to your level so it is quite safe.
Location is not bad, you have Family Mart just below and shops all around.
This is a place to stay if all other good hotels are sold out.

Expensive but clean

Although the 169 Xining Hostel provided a nice room in a great part of downtown Taipei, it was a bit overpriced for what it was. We paid about $300 US for three nights (through airbnb.com), but it only provided the basic amenities - a bed, bathroom, and tv. There was no phone in our room (which we did need to make reservations for a restaurant) and the wifi was very spotty/non-existent. I think the worst part, which could be easily fixed, was the fact that we were given no real directions on how to get to the hostel. After a day of travel, the last thing you want to do is get lost in a new, busy city. Thanks to a google map we had printed out and a sharp eye, we found the hostels phone to call the front desk who came and gave us our room key. The front desk employee was very friendly. 

If you're going to stay at this hostel, make sure you check that your wifi actually works and that you can stay connected. Also note that it's directly across from Shinjuku Plaza. You'll find a tiny white and orange phone connected to the doorframe at #169 (keep your eyes open!).

Average but Overpriced Hostel

We booked the hotel for our New Years vacation. After fees it was about $100 a night. There is no sign for the hotel, and we were not given directions so we had a very hard time finding it. There is only a white plastic phone attached to a wall to call the manager to let you in to the hostel. 

The room was very clean and the hot water and A/C did work perfectly. The bed was comfortable too.

However, the WiFi only worked when standing out in the hallway, not in the room. As travellers to a new city, this was very frustrating when making plans and looking for maps and directions (also, note this was the only place in the city we could use WiFi without a Taiwanese phone number, even at Starbucks we could not use their WiFi).

Also there was no phone in the room which was necessary to make reservations at restaurants and call people in Taipei (as we couldn't message them either due to not having a solid internet connection). 

Overall I have to say I've had better experiences in hostels for half the price we paid for this one (and in more expensive countries too!).
