Orient Bay

It has been very difficult to get exact info on Alamanda in 2020, our beloved hotel. Different writers post info which is inconsistent or vague. We went the Orient and stayed nearby and planned to see for ourselves what happened at Alamanda post hurricane. It is shuttered and barricaded off. There is plywood over most of the first floor windows.  The pool is not damaged but it is drained. The plexiglass fence around the pool no longer exists.The lobby area was destroyed. The second floor rooms seem to be less damaged but still in need of a serious makeover. Vegetation is entirely overgrown. A wrecked car sits in the parking lot having been there for quite a while. There is zero evidence of human activity anywhere. The front door is covered over and the sign above is gone. The roof is significantly damaged in many, many places.  The surrounding village is almost entirely restored and there is little evidence there ever was a hurricane. The main street of town is restored and most of the shops and stores have reopened.
The Orient Village restaurant complex is mostly back in action although there are still one or two vacant areas. It feels almost like the old days. As one walks past the Cote Plage towards what was the Alamanda it becomes dark and a bit scary. Cote Plage is excellent however. 
We asked many locals who should be in a position to know what was going to happen to Alamanda and got an entirely different  and conflicting answer from all of them. I pieced together their various stories and am making an educated guess that there is a new owner of the property and the hotel will be restored but it will be quite a while before that actually happens. Some mention insurance issues. Some mention no new owner, but that is my guess, just looking for commonality in all the explanations. 
Business is still down as apparently many tourists have been spooked as a result of the hurricane and rumors of the damage done. Tourists will return in increasing numbers as word gets around that it is still a great place. The beach looks the same. 
The bars and restaurants which were once on the beach were, obviously, destroyed, but the good news is some have completely rebuilt better than they were before. You will recognize some of the faces working at them. As you walk down towards Club Orient several new bars, restaurants and shops are in mid-construction. We estimate they will open over the next several months.
The magnitude of the storm cannot be over-estimated. Several of the local schools no longer exist. Many houses are destroyed. Grand Case was never a garden spot despite the great restaurants and a drive down the main street of Grand Case reveals the really signifiant destruction. Some of the old restaurants have re-opened and hopefully more and more will re-open over the year 2020.
The airport terminal is 3/4th closed. It functions and everyone gets in or out efficiently, but in a quarter of the former square footage. 
Sunset Bar and Grill is back doing what they always do but it is been rebuilt in a way we no longer care for: extremely loud boom box euro-beat at 11:00 AM and a small strip shopping center hawking tourist junk. Food is not worth it. It is still fun to see the planes swoop in low and watch the newbies get blown out in the ocean by jet blast. 
Psychologically, the citizens were scarred forever and they will never forget: it was that bad. We recommend traveling to St Martin and staying at a resort/hotel in the Orient Beach area. We had a great stay and are going back.

Update on Alamanda Hotel Hurricane damage January 2020

This petite hotel is excellent. Hopefully, they will be reopening soon hurricane damage. Attention to every detail including what the French would call petite dejeuner. I would like to book there for a month it is so perfect.

Beachfront

The bar they had setup in April at the pool burnt down due to faulty electricity. Workers are staying in some of the rooms but it will be maybe another 2 years before insurance money is available for rebuilding. Will be completely renovated and up graded. 


Still in recovery

Sad to hear having stayed there 7-8 times over the years. Was hoping it would work out, but appears it is closed for good as a resort.

Guess will have to find other places to stay on Orient Beach. Sad about Alamanda.

Alamanda Resort will not reopen

I went to the Alamanda with my husband for lunch during our stay in Saint Martin. The pool and pool bar are open for public. They have good salads and snacks served in open air tables. 

The Alamanda used to be one nice small resort at Orient Bay. At the moment the hotel is closed due to the damage from the hurricane Irma, but they managed to keep going. The manager showed us the damage at the entrance and reception areas and it's a pity to see it. Most of the plants where washed out by the tsunami that came with the hurricane. 

Thankfully, they are managing to survive and still have the beautiful view of the Caribbean sea at Orient Bay.

Stopped by to assess the progress of reconstruction post Irma. They have a large covered bar open at the end of the pool. The pool is open with chairs to lounge in. The hotel kitchen is open for light food service. Doesnt look like much work on the hotel is active. Mostly boarded up. Customers were all locals. Doubt can expect much here for a year or more. Cleared most of the debris but not much actual real progress being made anywhere on Orient Beach. 

Closed to visitors

We chose this hotel for the quality of the price and the situation. We were not disappointed. Very well located on the BO, the rooms are large and comfortable and the breakfast is right. A baby bed has been made available to us. The rooms are equipped with kitchenettes and a safe. The only bemool, the Wi-Fi that we have never been able to make work... after all, maybe it was to make the most of our disconnected holidays.

Not bad.

Good condition. Warm home. Spacious, well equipped and clean room. Sea view and swimming pool. Custom service. For the family it's the top. Bathing table, beach trate. Top tip.

Pleasantly surprised

Unfortunate services, on the edge of unsanitary conditions (bad rooms, many water cuts, no pressure, very random wifi, and for a prohibitive price).

Fugeez... run away

It's a real pleasure to be back staying at this hotel. The always warm and true welcome makes us feel at home.
