Riverside Kandy - Home Stay

Kandy

Stopped for one day, everyone liked, family hotel, prepare delicious, beautiful view of the river, near Kandy city, and so many places for the towering, dirt is not, especially flies, I would stay here still. The girl speaks clearly, which helps a lot when communicating with people like us.

Good hotel

Excentric hotel by the river, very quiet. Proper rooms, very good restaurant. Nice house. Good address. Counselor.

Focused, calm

Unfortunately, the cleanliness is not terrible whether in the bathrooms or the bedrooms, even the pool is not very confident, the boss is almost as uncomfortable with the guests as with the staff.

Mediocre

Our room had a great balcony with plenty of sitting room overlooking the river.  Fair sized swimming pool with dining/seating area attached.  Again good views over the river.  Don’t be put off by the river being almost empty and looking brown and cracked, we spent time daily watching wildlife and local people going about their daily lives - fishing, washing, collecting wood etc.  The place is quiet but accessible by tuktuk or taxi. The seer fish in a delicious sauce was the highlight of two evening meals! A pleasant family run enterprise.

Great view over the river to the jungle, loads of bird watching.

We hired up a private driver, whose tour price included hotels for “mid-range” accommodations.  I don’t know what standard or reference was used for classification, but it certainly was not what I would consider middle of the road.  I would not stay here again and I’m not sure for which type of traveler this hotel would be best suited.

Pros:
- if you are looking for a place out of the way - this is it.  Far from town center 
- the owner and staff are very nice and try to please
-  I was able to get a kettle on request.  Since they dont come with the room, if you use one....bettter ask right away
-   There will likely be other westerners here or maybe all westerners  (that may be a con to some)
-  they serve breakfast and dinner (the lattter May or may not be included)
- electricity and air conditioning 
- there is a swimming pool (we didn’t use because it was too cool in the evening)

Cons
- my sheets had holes in them the size of loose change 
-  the towel (you only get 1 per person) never really dried because of the humidity in the room 
-  doors had gaps under neath and bugs were everywhere in the room (I woke up with bites and had ants in my suitcase for days)
- water never got hot..,.luke warm at best and I never felt clean 
-  beds are very hard
-  electrical surged twice but we were shown where the breaker was so we could fix the problem ourselves 
-  WIFI was so slow and/or erratic they might as well not offer it
-  there is no outlet near a mirror  or any other place you would typically want or need one
- dinner was included and we ate there the first night - it was really awful. Everything was beige to white (fish, French fries and soup). Other people seemed to be ordering off a menu and their food looked good though!
-  tv is up toward the ceiling, very tiny and not even connected or near a plug, so I would just consider it as not having a tv...which is ok...it was sort of like saying we have a computer to use but not telling you it’s circa 1996 and does not work
- they have driver accommodations if you hire a driver
- you’ll get exercise walking up and down the hill and the stairs to your room

In my mind clean, a comfortable bed, hot water and WiFi are non-negotiable.  This hotel did not deliver.  It’s probably the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had, but I would have never booked this hotel myself.  

If you are on a budget, want to be far from town center, don’t need WiFi and aren’t fussy about shower temperatures and linens, it’s probably fine.  I was miserable.

Would not recommend

Washroom was not really clean, there were alot of flies around the breakfast table and no one seemed to really care. 
Location was kind of remote, I had hired a driver which was fine.
Staff were really friendly and welcoming though.

I wouldn’t stay there again

We stayed at the riverside hotel in Kandy for one night as part of a three day tour of Sri Lanka with Sri Lanka Brothers tours. 

It is a lovely family run hotel which was clean, comfortable and very welcoming! 

Upon our arrival, we were immediately greeted and taken up to see our rooms, with our hosts kindly insisting on carrying our bags for us. 

After a short while after check in our hosts at the hotel knocked our bedroom door to take a pre-order on our food. This was very much appreciated and a kind gesture as the hotel was busy and we’re hungry after a long days travel. We can honestly say that the chicken and beef noodles that we ate at this hotel was by far the best food we had in Sri Lanka! 



Lovely family hotel

Well, we didin't book this place by our own, it was our driver, and I think that yhe hltel, knowing that, anyway, we'll stay because of that, gave us the worst room they had. So, at the beggining, we had a room wwith paint smell, the main door wasn't closing, except if we locked it each time we were going inside and out... we didn't get wifi in the room, twk single bed together but with space between so not sleeping together..we had some trouble in the bathroom, I had a cold shower and the shower door wasn't closing so the bathroom began a swimming pool... at this point, I went to the manager. We are ok to get cold water, and small room, and to not sleep together for a night or two, and we don't need wifi in the room... but not at the price we paid... we had a driver, wich mean that somewhere we pay for his room and food, but checking on booking, the price for 2 nights and 2 rooms (we even thought to get a real room to our driver, because it'd be cheaper!) was wayyyy cheapper that the price we have to pay. Finally they change the room for us and for the same price we had a room as big as my apartment, with a private terrace, hot water, ect... so, I don't knkw what to think about, it mean that if I didn't contest all that we had been swindled?... well, I think prices on booking are really ok for the place, and people are smiling and helpfull, but don't forget to do a double check before...

Mixed point

We had a very large room with a nice bathroom and a huge terrace overlooking the river. Everything was very clean. The food was good and for breakfast there was always an extras (e.g. sweet rice rolls) among the other things that were given at the small buffet (pancakes, fruits, etc.). Only the instant coffee didn't fit the other good offer. The pool is small but refreshing. The staff was helpful and friendly. Only the location to Candy is not optimal. The hotel is far out (10 minutes drive away).

Nice accommodation right by the river

Beautiful ghesthouse offering clean and comfortable rooms, a nice swimming pool with river view and a good kitchen, all at fairly reasonable prices. The young family running this establishment is very friendly and has cooked a special dish for my husband (a request made by our driver).
