This was a real sensensatinal stay at the kolonial house of Mr. Lallith. Maybe no steady WiFi/ internet and airco, onze you tasted the food, experienced the garden, the beauty of all the plants, i cannot describe. Just be there. Be in the moment and feel. Take time. The people that work there, are so kind, you feel love in the air and respect. We got a cooking lesson from Preva. SHE CAN COOK! The food is a real sensational adventure. I am longing to go back and learn more and enjoy  LIFE.

Hospitality here is an A+! The food is delicious traditionally cooked and the environment is paradise. The owner is such a kind and warm personality and the cooking workshop is a real traditional treat. Staying here means taking time for relaxation with nature and learning a lot about it. Rooms and the indoor area are large, clean and atmospheric.

Step back in time with authenticity

We had a lovely day at Kirinda Walauwa mansion for a cookery course - we took a tuk tuk to the local market to gather lovely fresh ingredients and returned to the mansion and helped our chef prepare a delicious meal using traditional cooking methods. It was a memorable day and we would highly recommend a visit.

For a taste of a bygone Sri Lanka, a visit here is a must -- it's like staying in a gracious family villa of the 1930s, with the warmest possible welcome, tea on the verandah, traditional cooking on a wood-fired hearth (and the chance to learn how to cook some delicious dishes) and cool, comfortable rooms for just a few lucky travellers. When I was curious about how the lavariya sweets we were served were made, I got extra as a special unexpected breakfast treat, and a full demonstration of the ingredients and technique -- just one small example of how Lalith and his staff go out of their way to meet your own particular interests. I can't recommend Kirinda Walauwa enough -- it was the high point of our visit to Sri Lanka.

Traditional hospitality and more

A truely unique experience staying in this glorious old home. Lalith was a very welcoming host. We really enjoyed the delicious home cooked food. You could taste the love. And it was very special to cook with her. They went out of their way to meet all our needs. It really is a traditional Sri Lankan experience like no other. Highly recommend.

Special time in a gracious old home

With Riksja Travel two overnight stays in this beautifull kolonial landhouse. Landlord Lalith will do anything to make your stay as pleasant as possible and he is helped by a great staff. 

Room is full equiped and even the bathroom is this great house meets any standard.
We had a great stay and ar elooking forward to meeting the staff again.

Wonderfull Homestay Kolonial Guesthouse

I cannot recommend staying at Kirinda Walauwa enough. From the moment we arrived (Family of four from the UK with two teenagers) we were met with smiles and kindness. Mr Illankoon explained his goal was to give an idea of Sri Lankan culture and this was definitely achieved. We had not realised that the 200-year-old home would be handed over to us for the two day we stayed, with the team staying in neighbouring buildings in the grounds. The first thing that strikes you is the history, the beautiful furniture and the indoor/outdoor garden. The two adjoining rooms were perfect for our family. We had what I can honestly say, was the best curry I have ever tasted. We were given a tour of the grounds and the incredible array of plants and fruits. We then walked to the local village to see a local Baker at work. This was later followed by a tug-tuk ride to the local town market to buy ingredients for our cooking lesson later. The lesson was very special as we had the opportunity to try traditional methods of preparing food and cooking on a wood fired oven.

We later walked to a Buddhist temple where we were privileged to be shown around by the monk who has lived there for over 20 years. He explained about the temple and Buddhism. An unforgettable experience. 

To be the only guests on this homestay is a unique experience and made us feel like royalty.

A unique experience of Sri Lankan Culture

We went for a cooking demonstration, we had no idea what to expect.

The property was a family estate for over 200 years and absolutely beautiful full of family photos etc. The cooking demonstration was fantastic as was the lunch we had.

Apparently they do home stays which I imagine would be fantastic.

Amazing 

Met by our host at a local market to see the produce on offer before having a master class from his lovely cook in a traditional wood fired kitchen. Despite our best efforts to break the coconut shredder our cook took us through all the steps of making a delicious Sri Lankan meal. If you like vintage British cars you are in for an extra treat.
