Sweet Hostel

Clean and peaceful hostel.
But, I slept without blanket...
I am in a hotel and I don't have any  blanket to sleep... why???
I had to use a sheet to make a blanket ... not pleasant ... night not really good

Good but..

Located in the heart of the city, the Sweet Apartment offers affordable accommodation for single travelers. Check-in was easy and quick, leaving the keys on the table as suggested by the owner.

Great apartment downtown.

Summary for those who do not want to read a long review: There are 72 steps leading up to the hostel and it is unsuitable for people who have heavy luggage,  dislike cigarette smoke or who want friendly interaction with their host.  If you are a smoker with good knees and minimal luggage who just wants a fairly cheap place to stay, you will probably be fairly happy here

This is not a hostel but a selection of private rooms with shared kitchen and bath. I stayed three long days and the vibe was very unfriendly. The owner lives in an apartment upstairs from the hostel and spends as little time with her guests as she can. Although her English is fairly good, she limits all conversation to financial matters. I felt very unwelcome and it seemed as if money was the only thing she cared about.

Prior to my arrival, I explained that cigarette smoke made me ill and was told that the smoking room is isolated and separate. The smoking room is directly beside the kitchen and as smokers do not close the door completely the kitchen smells of smoke. My nonsmoking room also smelled like smoke and other guests smoked in their rooms during their stay as I could smell it. The kitchen is in the centre of the apartment and  as all rooms border the kitchen, the quality of your stay is dependent upon the consideration of other guests. Despite wearing earplugs I was awoken before 8am by another guest banging pots and slamming cupboard doors. As the owner cleans in the mornings and does not check things after this, I was forced to mop the communal bathroom twice, as other guests left the floor slippery and soaking which would have stayed like that for almost an entire day otherwise. 

I would be very interested in meeting this friendly host that is mentioned in several reviews on other sites. Another guest explained that he was going to dinner and would then find an ATM and return to pay. and the woman actually held his passport  hostage until she got her ten euro! She took a picture of my passport on her mobile phone rather than have me fill out a form and provide me with a reg card which she is legally required to do. I asked her two simple questions (for a map and if the area was safe to walk alone in after dark) and I could literally feel how anxious she was to get away from me. She did not even take the time to pinpoint the location on the map or ask if I had any questions but left as quickly as possible. 

Most upsetting was the issue with my luggage. There are 72 steps (some of which are very narrow and winding) in a moldy smelling hallway with a partially unstable railing  prior to reaching the hostel. The woman  saw me struggling to get my suitcase up the last flight of stairs, turned her back on me and walked away. When I finally arrived into the hostel she did not say hello to me and immediately asked for my passport rather than giving me a minute to catch my breath. The same treatment ensued upon leaving. Due to gravity and the narrow, winding steps  the wheel ripped off my suitcase (which is less than a year old) half way down the stairs. This case has survived Chinese airlines, Thai ferries, Malaysian mini vans and Belgrade potholes. I did not drop the case, nor were there any cracks in the case prior to descending. . Based on my dealings with the owner, I did not even attempt to speak with her but tried to resolve the situation through Booking.com. I am disappointed to say that it has been almost two weeks and Booking.com has offered no support or advice whatsoever. Sure I saved a few euro staying here but now I have to spend considerably more replacing an almost new suitcase. Not recommended.

not so sweet

I was forced to stay here after my initial booking at 'Happy Hostel' failed due to the hostel being closed when I arrived. Great. Fortunately, I was instead greeted into Sweet Hostel by the helpful english-speaking owner who introduced me into what felt more like a home. Clean, modern and fully kitted out; I had a wonderful stay here.

Outsstanding

The hostel is near the center of Niš, but it's hard to find because it's the entrance to the yard and it's better to ask the locals. The bed is new, air conditioned. When we arrived at the hostel we lived alone and the whole room was at our disposal. The owner lives upstairs. I want to warn you: the hostess is taking the passports, we thought she was just going to copy the data. and she closed them in the table and said that it was for registration. Although we didn't need it, we were already registered in Serbia.
