After reading the reviews I am so confused! Just finished a 3 day stay here with my boyfriend, the outside doesn’t look like much but inside everything was clean and tidy, towels and toilet paper were provided for us. all the staff and maids were very hospitable and friendly. met some great people during our stay. only downside was shared bathrooms and showers but never had any issue with waiting for a shower, they were always free when i needed. all in all this place was a great place to stay in lisbon and i would recommend!

Me and my girlfriend had a 5-day trip to Lisbon. Actually we were looking forward to have a nice stay but this hostel turned it to hell.

The whole mess started at the check-in. We booked a double-bed dorm 2 months earlier via booking.com. The residence requested a booking confirmation with arrival-time via email and I did so a few days after booking. During de check in the staff member told me that they didn’t receive any confirming mail and there was no room free. After I showed him my mail in the staffs e-mail
program they were finally willing to provide a room. All in all, they didn’t check their mails, but a good correspondence to the guests should be the least. Anyway, instead of some accommodation they gave us a single bed room with an additional rollaway which didn’t look nowhere near to the pictures of their homepage. Instead of saying sorry he blamed a former staff member who should have checked the mails back then. After a long negotiation he gave me a discount of 5€. A few days later a room on the same floor was free, he didn’t want to let us switch to the room. Sad, at least here he could fix the reservation mistake.

The room: 
The room was a single bed room with a rollaway, no double bed room like booked. It had a wet moldy smell which stitched in our chests and caused headaches. There were cracks in the wall the window above the door  to the hall was taped with black paper and gaffa tape. Everywhere we put our hands on we felt a surface of dirt.

The bathrooms were a mess, there was a brown surface on the edge of the shower (mushrooms?) the toilet seats were loose and there was no toilet paper. The toilet behind the kitchen had no light and had total transparent large windows to the backyard so everyone from the buildings on the opposite side can watch you doing your business. The kitchen seemd sortet at a first glace but inside the fridge it was totally dirty and didn’t seem inviting to prepare your meals there. The hall was hung with cables (improvised electric supply?) and the doors had unsecure locks and knobs. Don't get fooled by the first floor where the reception is. It seems to be a neat "show off" floor which shall put on visitors mind that the hostel is clean and sleek.

The hostel cast a huge shadow over our Lisbon stay. It’s very sad, because Lisbon is a nice city worth a visit and it doesn’t deserve a hostel which doesn’t reach  to a minimum on service and hygiene standards. So choose your hostel properly and stay away from this house!



Better stay away

I lived in the residence as a student from February untill June 2016. If I wouldn't have had the luck to live toghether with a group of amazing people, my only memories of the place would have been bad ones. The residence and the way the landlord treats her residents don't deserve much praise.

The kitchen is underequipped. We shared a floor with 11 people, but eating with all of them togheter is impossible since there are not enough chairs nor plates. Moreover, when I sent an e-mail asking for more plates or pans without damaged coating, they answered they would take care of it, however, nothing happened in the folowing months.

The rooms are small, have an inclined floor, horrible mattresses and are very dark since they have a window towards an interior light shaft.

Then some words about the management. First of all they ask an incredibly high amount of money for the expenses. A cheap month costs about €60 per person, but I have to tell you cheap months are rare in Elias Garcia Residence. Then, half way the semester, they surprised us with an e-mail informing about a new rule: every party from then on had to be mentioned 48h on beforehand and the responsible should pay €15 extra for extra expenses. And as if that wasn't enough, at the end of the semester they threatened to make our floor pay €100 because one person was not cleaning her dishes. 

The landlord herself is also a very explosive personality: she woke me up several times by screaming through the house in the morning because some dishes were not clean. However, the two men that helped her, were always very nice and helpfull.

To conclude, I would advise anyone looking for a place in Lisbon not to come to Elias Garcia Residence. For this price you can find better places with better landlords.

Incredibly bad

You are okay with paying an average expenses of 70 euros ( despite the fact it is mentioned on the ad to be 40-50);
You are okay with having a RAT in your room , eat your clothes and the landlady will give you 50 euros as a refund despite the fact the loss was more than 200 euros;
You are okay with the misleading photos of the rooms ;
You are okay with having a TERRIBLE wifi connection , seriously it disconnects every 15 mins.

But there is a good point about this residence , the assistant of the landlady ( Rui ) is a really cool guy and he tries his best to help, but he is not a miracle maker and he doesn't make the decisions.

Not recommended, unless

I am writing this review just after walking out of the most wretched place I have ever lived in. I moved in in April and have stayed 3 months. I would have moved out but they threatened to keep my deposit if I did. 

So, why is it so horrible? I don't know where to start... the facilities are bad, the doors don't close properly, everything is old, the kitchen is disgusting, it's infested with mice and cats... but the worst is definitely the person in charge. She is the most annoying, mean, rude person I have ever met. I had the misfortune of having to live on the ground floor, which is where her office is, and I had to hear her screeching voice and loud stomping about every day from 9 am to 7 pm or so. She was always snooping about, trying to find ways to fine us and scam us for more money. For example, on the second floor there was one person that didn't clean his plates, and supposedly, she could charge said person 50€ for not cleaning the plates. Problem is, no one knew who it was, so she actually tried to charge the 11 people on that floor 50€ each. 

My recomendation is to stay away from this place because although I was hardly ever there and I truly enjoyed my time in Lisbon, it would have been so much better if I had lived somewhere else.
