Ometepe Island

My friend and I stayed at La Penita for 3 nights. We had a fabulous time, it is in a peaceful location however, not far from the watering hole. After a busy day you can walk 30 minutes and relax in the watering hole. Mark and his family are very helpful and can arrange moped hire and tours. We couldn’t get enough of Mums cooking either , we ended up eating there everyday. Thanks again for making us feel so welcomed. 

Peaceful, relaxing and a great atmosphere 

It’s a really nice accommodation in a more quiet and relaxing area. Mark and his family did everything to make us feel comfortable. He answered all our questions and gave us good informations about activities on the island or renting a motorbike. His family is really warm-hearted and provided us with everything we needed. You feel home from far home. They even gave us food late in the evening. You won’t miss the traditional food.  The price for the accommodation and the cleanliness was really good. Thank you for everything I would definitely come back 

Good atmosphere and clean 

Awesome experience. It's a new hostel, so it won't be glamorous. The beds and rooms are fine, but the real treat is staying with marc, lizzeth and their family. Marc and lizzeth, the owners, are incredibly accomodating and will help you out with whatever your plans are on the island. The make you great home cooked meals if you choose to stay for them instead of going out elsewhere. I can't recommend this place enough. It was my favorite place I stayed during my time in nicaragua.

A hidden gem on the island

We spent two nights in this great accommodation with Mark and Lizzeth and enjoyed a wonderful stay in a family atmosphere! La Penita is easily reached by bus, as it stops right in front of the house. Mark and Lizzeth are open, kind and extremely helpful. They took us to Altagracia after the shared breakfast to enjoy the nica nightlife with their relatives and friends - it was really fun! The rooms are small (with a fan and a mosquito), but the terrace with the doors offers even more trouble to relax and enjoy the space! From the underground you can walk to the water chill from your family.

Staying in a family atmosphere

I stumbled upon this gem while searching for a place to stay during my week in Ometepe. At first I was unsure of what to expect and was a bit anxious. Those fears were unfounded as Mark was waiting for me at the airport and helped arrange for transportation to La Penita. The place has the basics that any hostel should have: bed, bathroom, and shower. What makes this place unique in my mind is that you are really a guest of the family as opposed to just another bed. The food that Mama cooks is extraordinary and always what I looked forward to the most at the end of a long day of exploring the island. There are plenty of things to do around the island including hiking, kayaking, and riding mopeds and Mark knows the right guy to talk to for each one of those activities. 
I feel that my time there was short and would gladly take any opportunity to return in the future and of course I will be staying at La Penita.

Home away from home

While the accommodations here on the border of being a little too authentic to Nicaraguan life, the family that hosts is not to be missed. The accommodations are simple, but adequate. Expect a reasonably comfortable bed in a secure room. The toilet and shower facilities are across a little courtyard from the rooms and are adequate, but certainly provide no frills.  However, the host family is truly special. Mark, is originally from Holland, but has found himself in an island in Nicaragua because of a few salsa lessons, so the story goes. He is the primary English speaker and host in chief. He is warm, hilarious, thoughtful, and will do his best to make sure you are able to do and see all that you would like in the most efficient manner. He is generous with his time and truly makes you feel like you are a part of the family. You will also find the rest of the extended family flitting in and out and always happy to lend a hand. Mom is a very good cook and will happily make dinner for guests or make up a lunch to go upon request. Her plates are always beautiful and filling. You can also try your hand at working an authentic Nicaraguan washing machine (we call them washboards in the States), or Mom will gladly do it for you at tremendously reasonable cost. The hammocks out front are fabulous and the fireflies at night are extremely captivating. Come with an open mind and a readiness for adventure. It will not disappoint.

Rustic accommodations with a lovely host family

A perfect place for the kind of traveler I am: close to everything (road communication, beach, water, monkey, volcano path), close to family, you can eat with her, talk, share, laugh), and a very nice place (music, small view of the volcano, hamack, clean and inexpensive room, quiet). Something creates when you go to this hostel, which is more of a guesthouse than anything else.

Authentic

A must-see in Ometepe for an authentic address:) We rented the bicycles as soon as we arrived, and crossed a banana grove overlooking a nice little bay near La Penita. A good meal, and a good night, before climbing the Madeira. Our kind guide: the cousin of the family. On our return a warm local welcome, an excellent meal, and a very good night. After three days on the island, it really hurts to leave Lizzeth's family!
