At RM48 for a dorm bed for a night, this lodge is a bit expensive. 

However, the beds are wide and the bunks high so the sleeping space isn't cramped at all.

My dorm had only two bunk beds, so that also felt 'roomy'. There is a large (easily big enough for a backpack) locker per person as well. The room had three plug sockets.

There are two showers and two toilets per floor which might not be many if there was a big group.

Breakfast was tea/coffee/toast/cereal.

It was very clean and well maintained.

The market outside was audible but the lodge itself was very quiet.

The lounge is big enough for a dozen people to sit at tables if you needed to teach a class, give a briefing or had a big group of students.

Clean and Quiet, a bit Pricey

i booked the package from asiago but the original hostel went out of biz so i was transferred to this hostel. i am not quite sure on my booking but karen was so kind to put me in dorm with aircon. 

the male staff, sham, is particularly helpful. my returning flight was in early morning prior to the first airport bus, he helped me to book grab car at 4am. 

it is really a nice hostel.

Excellent staff. Local knowledge was fantastic. Karen the owner really made us feel at home and was super helpful. We are a family of 4 and our 18 yr old girls had a great time, so much that we stayed here 3 times on our travels. Excellent for families, single travellers. Very affordable with breakfast included and endless coffee!!!

So good stayed here 3 times in my visit to Borneo

Like the title suggested, the staff is very friendly, fluent in English and the location is nearby everything you'd want to do as a tourist. The rooms are clean and the common room is cosy and practical (free water, fridge, cutlery, tv, excellent wifi). Breakfast is included in the price, and it's the sort of breakfast that fills you up properly. Because of the central location, you'll have to deal with the city's noise, but it's not really bothering or keeping you from a good nights' sleep. Altogether, me and my 4 travelling companions had a very good experience here. Highly recommended!

Staff and location simply wonderful

I stayed here along with students from my college and 2 other members of staff. I have never stayed in a hostel before and was pleasantly surprised. Clean rooms, hot water and friendly staff. 
Comfortable bed and excellent location for night market 

School expedition trip

We stayed there for just one night on a transfer. Very warm, attentive reception, good advice and above all available 24 hours a day. Clean and comfortable dormitory. Simple but very good lunch (toast or roti). We were able to leave our bags in a locked room for the day.

The hotel is very simple but clean, it is cheap and the workers are sympathetic.They have been very happy to help us at all times and simply with a smile.The common room is very pleasant for a beer and we have not heard much noise at night.

We checked in because of the recommendation from the LP and were surprised by a desolate condition. I'm a little puzzled by where the good reviews come from. The staircase was just dirty and again. The room had fallen down and the bed was covered with muffled sheets. The hallway between the rooms and the laundry rooms was dirty and furnished with disgusting towels. Too few shower rooms, the sanitary facilities not functioning, no functioning toilet, cockroaches in the bathroom and dead insects in the room. Incredibly bad windows, you might think you sleep on the street.

Don't go there!

The Step-In Lodge is located in the heart of Kota Kinabalu, close to the shopping centres but above all a few meters from the Waterfront (Lungomare) where in the evening you can eat fish at ridiculous prices in improvised restaurants. The rooms are quite pleasant, with clean common bathrooms, the Lounge Area is convenient and you can ask for information both here and at the Tourist Office below the Lodge. Coffee, tea and hot and cold water free and internet.

Not bad.

The hostel is located in the center of Kota Kinabalu and you can find everything you need in the nearby area. The rooms are small but okay, unfortunately there is only one socket per room and a very dark lamp. Unfortunately I find that you have to pay extra for the wireless LAN and a 3 rm per towel is charged. The toilets are not particularly timely although cleaned several times a day. The dorm is unfortunately very bright so that you can listen to conversations from the next room without any service. The taxi is expensive, it costs 30 rm for a ride that costs 15 rm maximum.
