We booked one night before we left for the perenthian. At 8:30 the neighborhood was dirty and lightless, the condo was sluggish. We were greeted by a guy who doesn't chew half a word of English. They won't give us the booked apartment, but the one we proposed is decent unless as soon as I get in I see a BLEATTA and, as you know, the BLEATTA never travels alone. I block the tenant and ask him to check with me.

It's a cockroach infestation, OK!

THE hotel if u want to be in the town centre with amenities esp food outlets which are within walking distance.On fridays there r morning markets n the choice of wants are yours.It is a new hotel built in the old market.Comfortable n big rooms n ask for a discount if u r in for a second stay.If u like a centrally located hotel n not so expensive i recommend RAY YAN GH...NO REGRETS..

Central n ample parking

This accommodation is not an actual guesthouse. Basically you rent a flat in an apartment complex that is a couple of years old. It is located were Kota Bharu's central market used to be, in an excellent location for visiting the city (quite close to the tourist center, the night food market, and the other main attractions).

Since it's new and doesn't have a proper reception, it may be a bit complicated to find. We got our keys from a random-looking guy standing outside the building and the owner didn't show up to get paid, therefore we arranged with him by phone to leave the money inside a drawer upon checkout.

If you can put up with this strange setup, the accommodation is quite convenient. Our apartment was spacious and clean. Although there was no safety box, we didn't get cleaning service during out two-nights stay, and Wi-Fi didn't work properly, we were satisfied with our choice and we would recommend it.

New apartments, excellent location, no reception

Thought I was staying at a guest house,
No!
What it is,is a guy renting out apartments in a residential unit block,,the apartment was new,,clean,,and a good location,,
But from start to finish its strange,,
I arrived by taxi,,no reception,front desk, nothing,,had to talk to some residents who spoke english,, they called the guy,,waited 15 minutes for him to turn up,,
Found out cash only,no cards,,,he let me in,,gave me a map and said if i want to contact him use watts app
I told him i needed to do some laundry but he had no idea where i could go,,bank? Walk around you will find one,,
Made a time for the next day so i could pay him,,,6pm,,730pm i txt him,,1036pm he txt back tells me his not coming and he see me tomorrow,, then he txt me at 330am asking what time im checking out ,
I tell him 1145am,,,, again no show,,txt him again,,,oh i wont make it sorry,, just leave your money on the table and the door unlocked,,,
Ive been traveling for years and a lot of different countries and ive never had a situation like that,,,
And it turns out there is a laundry at the bottom of the street only 200 meters away!

Kota Bharu is, in my view, a slightly odd place. It's under the governance of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party. Every female wears a headscarf and immorality of any sort in public is stamped out. This gives the whole town a repressed and, frankly, depressed feel. There's none of the glorification of capitalism that you get in middle eastern Islam for instance. This is both poor and repressed. Everything about the place, including the haze from Indonesian fires, felt like a pall hanging over it. Take one example: the once notable night market has now been shunted away into a tiny back alley that is almost impossible to locate and which is shrinking by the night.

As such, you may well feel the Ray Yan Guesthouse is exactly what you need. It isn't a 'guesthouse' at all. It's a series of isolated apartments which are spotless, minimalist and modern. Showers, a/c, tv etc. are all in pristine working order.

Would I like to live in such a place longer term? No, because it's not me. But as a great escape from the strange atmosphere of KB town, it was ideal.
