It looks better in the photos than in reality. Shared and private rooms. With shared and private bathrooms. Lack of cleaning especially in the public areas and the wifi is very unstable. The service is loose, it took a day and a half to buy sugar for the tea. It is well located in the old quarter.

There are things to improve.

My wife arranged this room. Said the pictures on Agoga.com did not match the room we got. 2-floor place with a steep staircase (about 55 degrees) and no lift. My 70 year-old mother-in-law was with us and no one offered to help us with bags. I'll explain more about the service staff later. 

Our room was bare except for a full bed, one twin, a small round table, an uncomfortable chair and a trashcan. We were not told nor was their any info about how to change out our bed sheets or our bath towels. Under the beds were dusty like they hadn't been touched and also had food wrappers when we arrived.  My wife withheld this information from me because I was already upset by the way the front desk staff treated us when we arrived. Unfortunately, that did not improve. 

Men shower downstairs. I think women can shower up or downstairs. Showers were adequate, but the drain seemed to be lil more than a hole in the ground. Hair-body wash provided but I'd suggest you bring your own if you care at all about how clean you feel after showering. 

Upon check-in, we were told that Penang has a 10 Ringgit per day tourist tax. They wanted to collect that first so when my wife handed over a 50 Ringgit bill, the guy looked at her with annoyed surprise and said, "You don't have exact change?"

The rest of the front desk staff didn't say a word to us the entire time we were there. When we walked in they might look up, but never said "Hello," or any kind of greeting at all. They honestly seemed more annoyed that we were there than they were glad we'd rented a room in their crappy hotel. 

Sad thing is, there's a lot of potential for the place. Its in an excellent location and if you're a 20 or young 30-something this might be a great place for you (especially if you don't care at all about how front desk staff treat you). 

For me, there with my wife and mother-in-law, this place wouldn't have been "good" at half the price. YMMV, but if you care about being treated like a valued customer, avoid this place. 

Front Desk Staff SUCK 

On arrival thought the place was very good, easy checkin, friendly staff, decent sized room etc. Easy walk in the evening to Chullia St  Hawker Stalls for a really good meal. All over the hotel there were signs about no noise after 10pm all was fine till 3am when the noise the door banging, running up & down the very old, very noisy stairwell this went on & off till 5am. We don’t expect complete quiet in a hotel at night & do realise people are on holidays but this was the worst I’d heard in many, many years of travelling, it was a shame as everything else was OK for the price. We had been discussing staying another three or four nights after our experience though we left at 7am…..we were going to speak to the manager but as no one was at reception, just dropped the key & left.

Disappointed

Overall stay was good, not a very social hostel for backpackers.

Overall a good stay

The person in front of me got charged a lower rate for the same bed for some reason they made up. The stay itself was fine, but stuff like this makes me eager to leave Penang sooner. Unacceptable policy.

Double pricing system

Stayed here twice in dorm room (downstairs 6 bed room). Perfect place to stay. Great staff they try to meet your every need and they give great advice. Special recognition to miss Shelia very helpful. Recommend staying here great central location. 

Perfect 

Stayed at Rope Walk guest house for Lunar New Year break.. Was very central and easy to walk everywhere around George Town..
Guest house staff were very friendly amd Sheila was particularly helpful and knowledgeable of area and attractions.. 
The guest house was clean but this is not luxury accomodation.. shared bathrooms were washed out daily..  free drinking water supplied.. a bit of noise travel.. overall a good place and would stay again..

Central, cheap & great service

Beautiful hostel! very clean, the comfortable rooms, have laundry service! the WiFi works excellent. the location is perfect for walking to see the street art of GeorgeTown. and you can leave your sights on Malaysia on the walls.

 IMPECABLE is the most important thing.

Stayed for 4 days (3 nights) and enjoyed it very much! The price is definitely worth it and the workers are really nice. I really liked the homely feel and aesthetic of the place. 

The bathrooms could be slightly improved on but otherwise, everything is perfect!

Loved It!

We stayed 3 nights at Rope Walk Guest House and enjoyed it a lot. The house (nice architecture!) is in perfect walking distance to explore the city with its streetart and nightlife. Sheela was very friendly and helpful. Thank you :)
