We three British middle-aged guys are on our final few days in LT and LV tour. We had trouble booking here this particular weekend (6-7/7/17) as it was their popular Sea Festival weekend which draws Latvian tourists from inland.

The only decent priced place we found was here at €40.50 for a triple. It is out of the centre but close to the beach and the weather had improved so we were happy to be beach bums for a couple of days. We found it through B.c and I confirmed it on TA but saw only three reviews and no pics so a bit of a risk and adventure! It was the only place available in our budget but I need not have worried! 

We knew the town from a few days before so we trudged across town in the sunshine from the bus/coach station (arriving from Kurdiga at about 15:50) the mile to the hotel and found it easily next to a Mini Top supermarket and bus stop! 

We were greeted by the very friendly hostess who spoke done English and was keen to show us around when we checked in. 

Our room 3 (Kapteinis) was a triple room overlooking asbsts (I expect, just don't dance on it!) sheet roof and industrial buildings. No problem as this is on the edge of the port. 

There was a single bed in main room and double in smaller side room. The double proved a bit creaky but comfortable. A table and chair for each person was present but no wardrobe only hooks which was fine for us. A few coat hangers helped.

There were three glasses provided on table but no water. A fudge sweet each too which is a nice touch if you have a sweet tooth!

In our bedroom there were nautical themed curtains and paintings. I expect the same in other rooms too!

Internet wifi available in main room of Kapteinis rooms but patchy in small room depending on device. Best in space outside toilets. 

Sufficient electrical sockets (one with a triple extension) in both rooms for devices. 

Curtains were as usual flimsy so do not keep morning light out. No big deal. 

The room was clean, fresh sheets on the beds ;only one in the double that she apologised for), two towels each although a bit of fluff under the bed.

We had a quiet Thursday night but one could hear other guests walking around the corridor and their rooms all around in the evening and morning as it is an old house. No problem as it was part of the charm.

Showers are a bit cramped in height and width but no real problem unless one is obese. 

Water heat and pressure is no problem. As it was a busy weekend the loo and showers were busy early in the morning. No problem by 09:45. Pressure from tap was ok to flush out my razor.

The sole toilet is a strange design space wise limited by the waste plumbing. The Russian engineers obviously did not think it would be a problem! Quirky! There is a gap between wall and ceiling that someone complained about but that is no problem.  It is ventilation!

The busy hotel served breakfast from 08:00 in the amazing 70s decorated dining room decorated with cabinets of gnomes, tankards and pottery. The dozen sturdy wooden glossy  tables (and solid chairs) had flowers on each along with condiments. The local music on a CD player greeted us to a large generous 'Latvian' Breakfast buffet. Piping hot fluffy scrambled egg (even kept its consistency towards the end in a heated steel bowl), good variety of cheese, meat and salad. Pancakes (cool as unheated) with jam, good coffee from a dispenser, butch for tea, and cereals including muesli with lots of milk. Perfect!

We were the last in the breakfast room and two women came in with teams of paperwork. They turned out to be inspectors! I hope and expect the place to pass with flying colours as it is such a gem and different from the usual! This place must not be Western Europeanised!

The music was sureal, local folkish, some of which sounded like Count Arthur Strong's TV theme music!

Two of the three reviews so far were by a Russian who Google translated his Russian entry to English a couple of months later. Fair enough but an easy way to get points! I am the one who added the first pics though!

We left happy and content at noon checkout time after having checked out the brilliant Soviet style canteen Ednica Liedags round the corner which is only open till 15:00hrs.



Unique, friendly couple owned, 70s soviet style, brilliant buffet breakfast at €3, wifi good in public areas

My friends and I were amazed by the sincere kindness and warmth we received in 13 Enkuri. We arrived late in the evening -our holiday was a hiking trip through the north of Latvia, without any form of preparation. But that didn't stop Dzintars and his wife Dzintra from giving us the warmest welcome we could ever imagine: homemade pancakes at midnight, tea,... We were speechless.
This B&B is located in a very calm environment nearby the sea, though within walking distance from the city center.

Friendliest couple of Latvia

Pros:
The nicest and most welcoming owners in the world! Really close to the beach and within a pleasant 15­-minute walk to the city centre. Cool interior. Fridge in the corridor. Free parking right in front of the entrance.
Cons:
No internet. Two toilet cabins and two showers seemed to be not enough for all rooms, they were constantly occupied. There are two toilet doors but actually inside they re devided by a thin wall that doesn't reach the ceiling. Some guests may be scared by the interior of the showers (I felt a little uncomfortable too) but from another point of view they are cool (kind of old fashioned soviet style :))
