Prices quoted on Booking.com are in US dollars. The owner was using an inflated figure based on his cock and bull story of requiring money for some such reason. Only 200 odd kip per dollar but this deceptive practice is deplorable by standards acceptable to most people.

A typical run down Laos Guesthouse  with the garden tended by the squad of roosters at hand to greet one most times of the day.

Vang Vieng is and has been suffering a downturn of budget western travellers who are voting with their feet.

The rooms are clean and the host friendly enough but then you would not be in business if you were not.

I feel 70000 kip a night would be a fair value of a room here so if you are considering here maybe a few more dollars will see a much higher standard without trying too hard. 

Imaginative Exchange Rate

I prefer roosters to techno music, and came out here after one night in a more central spot -- and then extended my stay, because it felt so nice to be here. The family is lovely, the volunteer wonderful to chat with. 

It's a quiet and relaxing place to stay, and I really enjoyed it. The room is basic and comfortable and had everything I needed -- a good enough bed and bedding, a towel, a nice bench and bar to put/hang my things, a private loo with a hot water shower, a table out front facing the pretty garden, a nice warm light for reading once it got dark, workable wifi, water bottle refills to cut down on plastic. 

I'd warmly recommend it.

Such a nice place to stay

There's a way to do it a lot better, but we still have some for our money. It could be cleaner and more chic, but then it would be more expensive. The Australian receptionist and the managers are very nice. The bed is hard but clean. The bathroom is just fine but functional. There are no mosquitoes inside which is rare and very satisfying. Free coffee in the morning.

The Potential

My wife and I booked last minute to be sure we had a place to stay without having to go door to door upon arrival in Veng Vieng and Songkeo Guesthouse turned out great.  The owner spoke perfect English (having lived in Canada for 16 years) and was very helpful with all our needs.  I had a tear on my good pair of hiking shorts and the owners wife let me us her personal sewing machine in their family area to repair it.  The location is about an 5 - 10 minutes walk (if you walk slow and look into the shops)  to the main area of town. The room (#10) was basic with a Queen size bed (A/C was optional), but a little noisy from the roaming, free range chickens, but that is something every place has in this part of Laos.

Last minute booking turns out great.

It's a great shame about this place because it could be a really nice place to stay. A 10 minute walk form the bars and noise,in its own courtyard.The place has been neglected and looks in need of some TLC and quite possibly some funds. Sengkeo, the owner, is involved with a couple volunteer projects which appear to be very worthy causes, he can help facilitate that. 

Run down 

Loved this guesthouse. The family that run it are very welcoming and take good care of you whilst you are there. Very friendly and didn't mind me extending my room at the last minute. 
If you don't like farm animals then maybe not your cuppa, bit i loved walking out my room and a random cow being there, or chickens.
Free tea, coffee and water in the mornings.
The rooms are clean and tidy and is perfect if you don't want to be right in the middle of the party scene of Vang Vieng. Saying that, its only a five minute walk so your not far from the fun either.

Lovely guesthouse

The guesthouse is within walking distance of cafes/restaurants/bars, but can be reached in 10 minutes because the village is small. The rooms have all the old, not everywhere cleaned, there is a ventilator. The lights are sometimes turned off all over the street, the wi-fi, the ventilator, the water heater are cut off.

The cheapest option

If you compare all the positive reviews with the reality, you have to conclude that something is wrong (see photos). The reception was sober, the so-called wonderful garden was messy and a garbage dump and the terrace that connects all the rooms was dirty. The room is cloudy and everything is broken. The fan and the AC are full of dust from several years. The ventilation grids are crumpled and under the mattress you don't look at all at best. The sink drain soon falls off and the drain runs. The toilet splashes it around a triangle. The coffee table in front of the doors is cloudy, there are usually no savory bags of fruit and vegetables and there's no need to disregard the entire guesthouse.

There's something wrong!

Alongside all the other vang guesthouses in Vienna, Sengkeo guesthouse is much cheaper than its competitors (though slightly away from the city centre, but allows you to enjoy the quiet of the city) The person who takes care of the guesthouse is very welcoming, smiling and does not hesitate to give advice if necessary! Currently under construction (for a future restaurant ), this does not take away the friendly charm of the place.

Calm and cheap

When I first arrived I thought the driver was mistaken for the address, but we have to look for the guest house behind the buildings under construction. Guest with children and animals in the common courtyard, very friendly during the day but at night you will curse the cocks who do not wait for dawn to scream. the --: Wifi unavailable on the first day, room at 10 dollars (with ventilator): correct condition but very dirty bathroom and no hot water. the ++: laudry 10,000/kg and your laundry smells good in the sun
