Rooms are basic but clean and functional, guesthouse staff is very friendly. 
But: the tour agency, Kou Vang travel company,  which is attached to the reception area, is very unserious. We discussed with the agency owner the diverse option for tours. He tried to convince us, that all the options except the three jar sites are not worth to visit, which was astonishing for us. But we told him several times, that we will do tour number 2, which included the jar sites and the old city for the prize of 600000 kip. Our fault was, that we didn’t control the receipt. The next day, after having visited the jar sites, the driver headed back to Phonsavan. We told him that we had included the old city. Now we realized, that the receipt listed only the three jar sites. Being back we had an unpleasant discussion with the owner. He denied, that we wanted to see the old city, with the same arguments he himself used the day before, when he tried to convince us, that the old city is not worth to visit. In addition, he blamed us for not reading the receipt. For us this was cheating, especially as we paid the same prize for only part of the tour. 600000 Kip is definitely too much money for only part of a program.

Rooms okay regarding price-value ratio, but beware of Tour Agency

We arrived at Phonsavan around 5am by night bus from Vientaine.  Nice hotel allowed us to check in early.  Good location.   Good value for day use (about $10) because we left for night bus to Lurang Prabang.

A ‘Nice Guesthouse’ located in the centre of Phonsavan not too far away (about 7km) from the Plain of Jars (Site 1).

Within easy walking distance from the bus station and restaurants, it’s in a good location.

The staff are friendly and helpful. Laundry is a tad on the expensive side at 15k per kilogram and they are tight with the weight. Lucky for me my laundry weighed exactly 1 kilogram. The receptionist studied the needle for quite some time and I assumed he was attempting to use ‘the force’ to make it go up but alas the force was not with him.

The room was basic but adequate. A swivelling ceiling fan kept me cool during the night. Bathroom facilities were adequate and I could get warm water from the shower after adjusting the tap handle to the correct position.

Basic but Adequate

This guest house scores very well on all the basics. The location is central, being close to the central bus station, restaurants and tours. The rooms and bathrooms are clean and the mattresses quite comfortable. The staff is very friendly, there is good wifi, they have a water cooler so you can fill up your bottles for free. And then the price for a two-person room of about $10 is great value.

There can be a little bit of noise given it's right on the main road, and I was woken up by a rooster early in the morning. But the rooster is not in the control of the guest house and convenient location will always be accompanied with some noise - it's good that Phonsavan is rather slow and things do quieten down by 22:00. 

All in all, I can't really ask for more from a guest-house - good location and amenities at a very reasonable price.

Very Nice indeed

I haven't slept as well in Laos for a long time as I did in this guesthouse. Very comfortable bed, not too hard and not too soft. Everything was clean from the bathroom to the hallway outside. It has a fan in the room but you don't really need it, two bottles of water and two towels for each guest, and at the reception they speak very well English. Price/performance was perfect in my opinion. You can also sit comfortably in the yard, have a drink and make friends with other guests at any time. I can recommend it.

The rooms are very clean, it's cheap, and the wifi works great. Perfect for backpackers. It has warm water and free water bottles in every room!! A nice place to be and you can also rent scooters there.

This hotel has a number of positive points: It is clean and they tidy the room each day; they will book bus tickets onwards to your next destination; and the beds ofter a decent night's sleep. For around $10 a night, this is good value.

However, if you come during the winter months, this hotel is freezing. It is 1100 metres above sea level in Phonsavan and temperatures can drop to the low single digits overnight. The problem with this hotel is that it gets no sunlight at all, so the room stays cold as an icebox all day. It feels as cold in the room as it does out on the streets at night. Perhaps they could look at heaters.

I've been offered a simple room for a modest 150,000 kips, and coming to Sam Neua is one of the first guesthouses, but I strongly recommend that you go a few hundred yards further and you'll find much nicer, cleaner hotels at the same price.

Poor price to quality ratio

Nice Guesthouse is a good option to combine just two nights of visiting Phonsaban and a good price.The attention is right.They inform you of everything you need and will also try to sell you excursions.Before buying anything compare prices with the two agencies that are just a few hundred meters apart.

Located on the main road, very noisy day and night. Nice room without any charm, pretty standard. 70,000 kips for the night is pretty convenient. They don't offer a restaurant but you can easily find something to eat nearby. The family restaurant across the street is very nice, you eat well and they're fast and efficient.
