Those who said this is what you want if you wanna experience REAL japanese style ryokan in previous reviews certainly can't tell the difference from chinese and japanese!!! I am sorry but I can tell the difference and that I misjudged and booked this ryokan with decades of experience in Japanese travel!!!! I am ashamed of myself!! See all my reviews on tripadvisor on Japan.. I have never felt so obligated to leave a review here to prevent further people from falling into this trap.

Firstly, this hotel is run by CHINESE... everyone here is Chinese... this is NOT japanese hospitality... They mainly receive Chinese tour groups and they are noisy as hell at dinner and public bath.... at checkin the staff raided my family of 80000 yen in CASH and refused to take credit card ( Not written in the booking details). In retrospect, i understand why because we would have run after first night... We were short for cash for the remainder of our 10 day trip. ( ALL real japanese ryokan make you pay AFTER you check out)

The bathroom inside the room is soooooo nasty and smelly that it made us GAG!! the plumbing is old hence it made the room smelly too... I am still having PTSD from the bad stay..

The tatami bed is not plushy and my back hurts after 2 nights... real tatami is not like this... I stayed at REAL Japanese ryokan ran by japanese and their tatami was different.

Shuttle is a scam... They do advertise on Jalan, Japanican, Booking.com that they have shuttle vans in the hotel.. but they refused to drive us to station which is 10 mins away on 2nd day.. soooo stingy.... they said they will only drive us twice, one to hotel and one after check-out.. typical CHINESE style business etiquette

Meals, Dinner and breakfast was bad. Dinner is slightly better, but breakfast was shared with Chinese tour groups ( along with NOISE)... quality was poor. Stale bread, cold eggs

Onsen: outdoor onsen is a wooden tub on the ceiling... it is SOOOOOO slimy with green mould that I fear to sit down in the hot water and let the green fungus go near my private areas.... this is causing PTSD for my future hotspring experiences..

PLEASE please please... stay away.. they have alot of different alias because of poor reviews... they are called Kosuien here, or Seigaku hotel on google, or 森林與湖之宿 湖翠苑 on Japanican... I really hope I can save some of you an unpleasant experience where I still loath myself for letting my family stay here...

WORST ryokan/ hotel EVER!!!STAY AWAY please

If you want to experience the real Japanese lifestyle of sleeping, then this is for you.. We just loved it. There is in the small wardrobe 2 kimonos for you to wear to dinner if you want and we did. Also we had a few friends who all shared our fun and sake we all drank to celebrate. Dinner was lots of fun and it was all Japanese style. If you can't manage to lie down on the floor on top of padding, then this is not for you. Breakfast was OK, but somehow Japanese serve their food only lukewarm and not hot. Coffee was an issue. The experience was worth it for us. Also note, your hair styling tools don't work, too low a voltage. Also there is a very long high walk up to the hotel, so if you have issues walking, give it a miss, for you have the steep walk down with no handrail.

This was obviously an opportunity for guests to experience the "old" Japan - in fact this is an old hotel with a very steep drive you have to walk up (bags are taken on a small truck).  There's a small verandah overlooking a lake but the room was bitterly cold with the balcony doors open, aircon helped with the doors closed.  We had a typical Japanese meal downstairs with other groups.  No safe, no phone.  Breakfast not bad, at least some eggs and fruit.  Public bathhouses for both M & F, I'm afraid I'm a bit old for sleeping on thin mattress on the floor.

Too old for tatami mat beds!

It's a hundred year hotel with natural hot spring (onsen) source. When I first entered their lobby, it's filled with an uncomfortable heater smell. The bedroom is in tatami style, the space is wide enough for three people to sleep. There're yukatas in the cupboard which you can try on and take photo (rmb to wear it in the correct way). But their toilet area is very smelly, the shower area doesn't look very clean too, I can't stand the thought of bathing there. Their breakfast and dinner are of average only. 

My family can't sleep well on the "tatami cotton bed" as the old heater there wasn't functioning at its best. Another annoying thing is that they don't provide electric kettle! You need to purposely go to the lobby to get hot water. 

In the morning you can go out to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the lake and mt fuji, pass through the tunnel and walk for around 10 mins you'll find a good photography spot for the mountain. Trying once for the tatami is enough, I don't think I'll go for the second time.
