When your room is right in the middle of the jungle, it is magical. We stayed in the Mayan Kacike Suite located smack in the middle of the leafy trees, birds, and surrounded by the most amazing sounds. I would call this room rustic chic. No electricity, but Mario (gracious hotel staff) lit gas lamps each night for us to provide light. Warm water, not hot but you are in the jungle with warm water, that is a treat in and of itself. The trail to the mirador and swimming hole (poza) is clean and well maintained (by Ismael) everyday. We wandered the grounds, searched (and found) for birds, and enjoyed several well cooked meals in the outdoor cafe. The nachos (with homemade chips) and salsa fresco con mint were some of the best we have ever had! Service was wonderful and we always felt welcome by all. It is rustic and it is in the middle of the jungle, literally on Terrace 9 of Takalik Abaj (arrange a tour of the site as well, beautiful and well maintained Mayan site) so expect some critters but it’s well worth the calm and quiet.  

Magical home in the jungle! 

It is our second time at the hotel. I love the place, the location is beautiful. You´ll enjoy nature and the peace it brings. The staff are super nice and friendly, they want to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

To enjoy nature and peaceful enviroment

It is quite isolated as place, but if your plan is to visit some a Mayan ruin and get away from civilization, this lodge is the place. Food at the restaurant is basic but rooms are comfortable and nicely decorated although rustic.  No TV or electricity in the bungalow we stayed.

This beautiful lodge is in the middle of nowhere but just two kilometers from some of the oldest Mayans ruins unearthed to date.   It is on an old family plantation and extremely well cared for. There is working machinery for processing and coffee, macadamia nuts,  Cacao  with distinct features of European influence like a beautiful fountain and a little chapel. And there's a wonderful restaurant with the best service I have received in all of Guatemala out of my 15 years of visiting there. It's definitely worth the trip if you like history and nature.

Beautiful spot in the middle of nowhere

First, like several other reviewers, let's be honest.  This is a perfect place for certain kinds of people, and a perfect nightmare for others.  If you need luxury, 24-hour a day electricity, smooth sailing, a masseuse and nail salon, find another place.  You will hate Tak'alik.  But, if you love off the road adventures, something new and different, give this some thought.  My husband and I are retirees, not the most sedentary but you know, not marathoner's either.  We are so in love with this place, not because it is easy, but because it is a challenge.  
We stayed in the bungalows, away from the main lodge, in electricity-free room lit at night by candles and kerosene lanterns.  It was quiet, peaceful, the best bed I have ever had in a hotel, terrific food, and some hot games of Scrabble (we brought it with us).  We rode horses (first time in 40+ years for me) and hiked trails, played with hummingbirds, saw a million and three flowers, and slept the sleep of the righteous.  The room was huge, and the spiral staircase leading up the the porch was steep but worth every trip up and down.  

A word of warning.  If you have bad hips or have difficulty walking, look elsewhere.  Everywhere is up and down hill, and the steps are higher than normal, so require some extra work.  But oh, it was so worth it.
