Had a wonderful experience at Cocoa Village with Matevz and his friendly staff. It is what it is,  eco- style lodgings in a remote area on the banks of an ancient impact crater lake. Clean rooms, running water, good food, great company, and cold beers. 

Great times at Lake Bosomtwe.

We had a lovely 3-day family stay at Cocoa Village Guesthouse at Lake Bosumtwi (surprisingly at the same time with Mrs. and Mr., the couple has just left a very negative review of the place, we had the opposite experience). 
People tend to forget about the environment they are arriving to, Cocoa Village is located in a remote, hardly accessible fishing community.  That makes it special. The place is a little paradise, we appreciated every second we spent there. You cannot expect A/C rooms and 5* services in a place far from everything. 
Yes, there are geckos, tiny flies etc. But we are in the bush! What did they expect? If someone does not want to leave his / her comfort zone, he / she should not visit places like Lake Bosumtwi, there are beautiful exclusive (and expensive) places close to Accra.
About the prices, well, not a budget place but far from being overpriced.

Paradise at Lake Bosumtwi

We stayed 2 nights at the Cocoa Village guesthouse at Lake Bosomtwe.

Very nice stay in a relaxed atmosphere, the whole team were always very friendly and helpful. And the dogs are great!

Food and drinks in the restaurant were good with a stunning view on the lake and the fisherman in the morning. Upon request, the team made a bonfire by the lake in the evening, which was a fascinating moment, medaase!

Lake Busumtwi and Cocoa Village was the highlight of my trip to Ghana. Matevz and Tjasa are wonderful hosts - they are both so welcoming, friendly and go above and beyond for their guests. A beautiful location and lovely rooms. I particularly enjoyed the paddle boarding and meeting the local children by the breathtaking lake. Overall a fantastic experience.

Beautiful location and wonderful hosts

It is BEAUTIFUL, quiet, amazing food, clean rooms, awesome staff and the water is warm and clean!  I love to swim and so does my 3 year old son.  This was a great place to do just that.  No ocean waves, just clear water that you can walk right into.  The paddle boards they have to rent is a huge bonus and allowed us to check out neighboring villages from the water.  The food is made on site and was always fresh and delicious. I definitely recommend staying here.

Awesome place to stay!

This place is amazing! Beautiful views, warm water, good food, clean and comfortable rooms, friendly people-they have it all. I highly recommend hiking to the top of the mountain. It is a difficult climb but the views are worth it and then you get to walk through the jungle to a local village.

FANTASTIC

We spent 3 days and 2 nights at cocoa village at lake Bosomtwe on Christmas. The place is far and the road is not easy but it was a beautiful stay. The lake is beautiful and convinient for kids, clean water, no streams, warm water. The family room (ask for it) is very nice, simple but nice. Don't expect air conditioning or hot water.
The kids enjoy the grass to play, the sap boards to train or sail with us.
The restaurant is ok and is aimed for western world taste. Recommended are the steaks with mash potatoes or French fries. The pastas and chicken are ok. Breakfast was nice with either pancakes, French toast or omelet.
Fishing is not an option as there almost no fish in the lake

Best low budget stay in Ghana 

Very relaxing place, right close to the Lake, as well as neat. Internet connection reaches poorly, but there are interesting alternative plans to do. It has a nice garden and pleasant restaurant, which although quite slow in the service, serves good food. The family house is a good choice value for money.

Pleasant stay

We stayed just one night in one of the shared rooms (double bed + bunk bed and self-contained bathroom) and had a fantastic time. The rooms are sparsely appointed - which is fine because you won't be in your rooms that long with the views from the veranda - though I really appreciated the festive wall paintings and incorporation of local materials into the decor (i.e. bamboo shelf units and plumbing covers). There was also a nice touch of some beautiful flowers on the bed next to the towels and soap when we first arrived. The veranda opened up to the main yard, which was right next to the lake itself. Didn't notice any A/C; we had ceiling fans, but the room itself was quite temperate, possibly due to the storm/rain that evening. There were plenty of windows, though they were difficult to open as the shutters were locked and there was a screen in the way and the bunk bed needed to be moved. I don't know enough about Kumasi-area weather to say we were there during the cooler part of the year (though it's blazing hot in the north).

The other rooms looked similar in style and size, though there was a larger 'family room' up the hill and across the main drive to reach the facility. We initially had been booked for this room because we had 4 in our group, but we were bumped at the last minute to the other location. This worked out better, however, even though we were a little cramped. It was nice to be closer to the lake and not have to go outside the compound walls. 

We ate dinner and breakfast there and both meals were fantastic. Three in our group had nicely cooked beefsteak and the mashed potatoes, while the other had grilled chicken and french fries. We shared a plate of asparagus cream pasta as a side. Great food, nicely seasoned and perfectly cooked. Breakfast was pancakes with chocolate cream and a ham and cheese omelette, along with some toast and honey. Again, fantastic meals (the "pancakes" were closer to crepes and the chocolate cream was Nutella, FYI - amazing!). 

The outdoor lounge space is also quite appealing with two large covered porches and ample seating spaces. The bar is also a highlight with it's funky and colorful paintings. There are hammocks strung up between the trees by the lakeside and it was just an all around comfortable place to be. Wish we could have stayed longer. The lake is about all there is to do at that location, but they also arranged for some hikes and horseback rides through other local venues, I believe. We would have done some of that had we been there longer.  

The lake itself was quite and a nice break from Kumasi traffic and noises and smells. We were treated to a downpour in the evening and it really cleared the air and gave everything a fresh and clean smell. It was a welcome surprise after going through several months of dry weather in Tamale. 

The staff working there was also quite nice. We engaged the most with Patricia, who went above and beyond to help us store some of our perishable items in their freezer so it could make the drive the following day. We really appreciated that extra effort. 

The only negative of the entire place is the road to get there, though it could be a mixed blessing. We were traveling in a small car and the path was incredibly rough (took 45 minutes of very slow driving to go the 5 kilometers from roadside to location). This also prevents a lot of roadside traffic and keeps the place a little more 'off the beaten path' (literally). It's great for tourism, but maybe not so much for the development of the surrounding communities. 

Biggest plus - which is always a fear when traveling south - almost no bugs. They claim no mosquitoes are in the area and while I didn't see or hear any and no one in my group had any bites, I am perplexed by this claim and want to dig into it a little further.

Great Little Lakeside Place

The place itself is amazing! Green grass, coconut trees, restaurant at wooden balcony, tainting beds and the quiet is addicting! Unfortunately because of late order the dorms are the only room that was vacant, not so good dorms - wooden dorm that if something is fall from your hand you won’t get it back, very hot and you can take the fans from the restaurant only after it closes, the bathroom and the showers are shared with everyone (including the staff) and the road to get there is unpleasant, very unpleasant. Definitely will have much better experience if we were at the private rooms!
