Willy Fog Hostel

I've given this hostel 5 not because every single thing is literally perfect but because lots of things are great and some phenomenal. The great things are that there is a lot of space all over the hostel, with a large kitchen, various seating areas and a nice terrace, and that it is right in the city centre but on a pleasant, quiet street. The phenomenal things are that the staff are really nice, helpful and professional and that it is extremely cheap compared to nearby and much worse hostels.

This is a pretty cheap place (if you are booking online they have a big 18 bed dorm they don't advertise so maybe try turning up) with very friendly and helpful staff who are all multilingual. There is good quick wifi and a free computer albeit it's rather slow and unreliable. A ton of places to sit and relax in with hammocks, lazyboys etc. There is also an upstairs balcony area where to hang out. 
My big complaint is the kitchen considering it's quite a large facility it's tiny and always full of people even at times of day when you wouldn't expect that. They really could do with extending it.
I think how much you enjoy this place depends on who else is staying. It's sort of place where you can meet a cool group of people and have a great time or do your own thing and never really feel it. 
All things considered it's fine place for few days in Montevideo.

We had a very good experience at this hostel (despite some bad reviews on this website). The atmosphere is very good, and the staff is super friendly with great service. They accidentally overbooked the female only rooms, so I had to spend one night in the mixed rooms, but they gave me that night for free. The bathrooms are not very clean, and not all of the beds have lockers, also the doors didn't have locks, so I didn't feel too comfortable with the security for my stuff, but the neighborhood surrounding the hostel felt pretty safe. The location is good, really close to the river and the old town.

I never really write comment and don't always check the comment here, but for now one, I ll !

What a terrible place...

First, they may be friendly, you don't know whether the guy/girl behind the front desk work there or not. 

NO CREDIT/DEBIT ACCEPTED.

Way tooooo much expensive compare to other hostels in the area. (I went during carnaval but it was still more expensive than other). 

They show you around and it looks OK. But then, you experience it and quickly change your mind...

Let's just mention what went wrong :
- we couldn't close the door, the clench just doesn't work.
-  lockers work perfectly but tiny problem, huge hole on the side... 
-  beds are terrible, it's a "wood stick".
- showers are dirty.
- no toilet papers in bathroom (I checked everywhere and I was too pissed to ask my fault, so I use mine).
- ground, walls, ceiling are falling apart...

Even if I don't recommend it at all, i don't like to end with negative point so here are the positive :

- location. 
- the terrasse outside is great !   


Terrible

I am not normally one for writing reviews but after staying at Willy Fogg we felt it was our duty to share our story. I think its important you know thay before we stayed we read the negative reviews and thought people were being fussy/picky. We've stayed in many cheap hostels in south america and have to say Willy Fogg was a new experience. 

First of all, before I even got into the hostel I was robbed by my taxi driver.. not Willy Foggs fault but important anyway. 

When we arrived at the hostel the staff were friendly enough, checked us in, showed us round, however after the initial entrance I would have had no idea who worked there and who didn't. Unless there was a staff member behind the desk you wouldn't know. Other than being friendly I'm unsure of what else they do within the hostel apart from smoke cannabis and play the red hot chilli peppers loudly and on repeat all day and night long. The ambience of the hostel is drug/crack den, the walls are full of holes, and there are plants growing on the inside. 

Room - we were in a 8 bed dorm (we booked a 17 bed dorm?) And I can honestly say I have never seen a more disgusting room in a hostel. The ceiling was mouldy and falling down (there was pieces of ceiling in my friends bed), there was blood on the wall, holes in the mattresses (they were basically disintegrated from being so worn down) holes in the walls, no windows, dirty plaster in my friends bed, my sheet had brown marks on it, our locker had a mouldy sock in it, one socket in the whole dorm for charging things. There was aircon but I'm not sure it contributed anything to the occasion. My friend got stung twice in the night by some unknown creature in her bed. The door doesn't have a lock on it and doesnt shut properly which means you get to enjoy the red hot chilli peppers until midnight whether you want to or not, you do get a personal locker though. My friend left her flask on her bed and someone stole it while we were out.

 Although this isn't technically the fault of the hostel, we also had the most unusual dormmates of all time. We had an 80 year old woman with a walking stick in our room who had bought her entire home along including her gas hob and pots and pans which covered the whole room, she also smelt very meaty and farted loudly, and she stole my duvet for her bed whilst I went out for the day. I think because it's the cheapest accommodation in the city, the target market is anyone and everyone!

Bathrooms - were just generally gross and dirty, mouldy, smelled of poo, no working locks on the doors. We couldn't bring ourselves to shower in them because they felt diseasey.  

Kitchen - again it was so filthy, a person who we think worked there did clean it when we were there. But the fridges and the general kitchen sides were gross. 

In the end we actually booked another accommodation and left because we just could not spend any more time in Willy Fogg.(We planned to stay for 2 nights but only managed 1) this is not something we have ever considered, we are backpackers and we have always stayed in the cheapest hostels but this place made us miserable. So take our advice and spend the extra cash on a nicer hostel, you hopefully won't regret it.
