We stayed here fod a night with friends. My friend booked through Booking.com   I left something in my room and called the next day to be told to call back......ni response from then via Booking.com either. Very disappointing and wrong!!

Spent I night here

In Chepstow Road, there is this hotel, the Gateway Express, and a few doors away, the Gateway Hotel.  They are part of the same business.  There is a tiny sign by the front door saying "Gateway Express".  The check-in has to be done at the other hotel.

The Gateway Express is unmanned.  There are no staff there.  There is no breakfast there.  In effect, it is an annexe of the slightly more expensive Gateway Hotel.  The latter does do breakfast by the way.

I stayed in room 5 at Gateway Express.  It had a double bed, TV and good bathroom.  It was all clean and tidy.  The location is 5-10 minutes walk from Rodney Parade and 15-20 minutes walk to the city centre and Newport Railway Station.

All in all, it was a comfortable stay.  It was £45 room only for the night.

Clean and tidy accommodation

Polite and helpful man at reception.  Bedroom was clean and comfortable and bathroom modern. Parking was a bit awkward but we got a space ok. Didn't stay for breakfast as had to leave early but thought good value for the price. Also generous quantity of milk/tea/coffee with good-sized milks.

Good value

The only good part was the guy who booked me in.  After that it was downhill all the way.
The reception is in a different building than my room.  The parking was full at my building to I had to park at the reception building and carry my luggage down the street.
The building which housed my room smelled of stale smoke and old carpets and the carpet inside the front door was shredded and dangerous.
My room was shabby and tatty.  The carpet was frayed around the edges. Bathroom fittings were rusty and badly maintained, shower tray chipped. The electric heater was speckled with rust and other substances.
It was horrendous and I definitely would not recommend staying here.

Only one night, so I survived!

The name cleverly implies something else (Holiday Inn Express etc) - however, this is an en-suite room in a converted "Victorian" large house. As others have described, the "Express" is 4 houses down from the Reception building.  Our first attempt to check in was aborted as it is a very small area and an argument was ongoing. An hour later the process was smoother but we were surprised by the money-up-front requirement.  Very basic and tired fittings.  Parking is very difficult although we were told to phone a mobile number if we had any problems (not tried). On the plus side, we thought that the room and sheets were clean and the shower gave controllable hot water. We paid £66 for a Friday night which is cheap and so all the above is expected.

Very basic

Weird set-up. Consists of a several big old houses in a fairly dodgy / run down area. Check in was an unwelcoming experience, with payment demanded up front (rather than holding card details) before seeing our room. Staff seems to speak little English. Then sent away to another house 4 doors away. Signs everywhere asking you to use the hand sanitizers, which unsurprisingly were all empty. Room stank of stale cigarette smoke and was musty. Window was screwed shut, and extractor fan in the ensuite did not work, so poorly ventilated. View from the room was mostly rubble. After we checked our room we were ready to hit the road and find somewhere else, but had already paid (...which explained payment on arrival). Bed had a stained mattress, but otherwise the room was actually fairly clean. Loo roll was apparently being rationed and we soon ran out. Given the smell we spent as little time as possible at the “hotel”. Given the price, £100 for 2 nights without breakfast, I suppose I shouldn’t complain. It did the job as a base to sleep and shower, so OK if you’re working locally perhaps. However if you are couple then kiss goodbye to any notion of a romantic stay. 

Smelly and basic

We booked this hotel as it was only a ten minute walk from where my daughter lives. That was the only decent thing I can say about it!
On arrival (at the Gateway Hotel, four doors away) the reception was closed and we had to phone a mobile number for someone to come and check us in. This reception was never open during our stay there.
After getting to our (musty smelling) room, I tried opening the blinds to let some natural light in but they wouldn't budge in any way. There was a wardrobe with NO coat hangers - really??? There was only one chipped teacup, did they expect us to share? My partner phoned the mobile number to ask for some coat hangers, another teacup and an extra pillow and she was told that it would take about 30 minutes. We waited for over 50 minutes before we left as we had arranged to meet my daughter and the items still hadn't been delivered. However on our return, the coat hangers and teacup were waiting for us on the floor outside our door! We're still waiting on the pillow! There was also just one and a half of the thinnest toilet roll for our three nights there so we just bought some more as reception was closed.
The area around the hotel seems really rough and dodgy - on our first night we set out to walk to the nearest pub for some food and a couple of drinks but felt so unsafe we turned back and went into the city centre.
We booked and paid for this hotel for three nights but after the second night we decided to check out early as it really wasn't very pleasant at all. The following morning, as we were carrying our luggage down the stairs my partner asked one of the housemaids if reception was open as we wanted to check out early. She was told that no-one was available but she would phone and let them know. Three times she asked us if we had paid! Seriously, how dodgy are the characters that stay here? Surely if we hadn't have paid we  wouldn't have asked for information about leaving early!??
This is a low budget hotel but the prices suggest otherwise - nearly £50 per night for room only - it's a no brainer, save your money and go to a Premier Inn or somewhere similar, at least you know what you're getting!
Avoid at all costs!!!

Rundown hotel in a dodgy area of Newport

Check in was fine and lady helpful,have to walk down the road to the gateway express although on first glance the room looks clean and presentable nice clean bedding all seems well. I dropped a pound coin behind the bedside cabinet and pulled it forward and behind it and the bed was months of dust and cobwebs! I also put clothes on the top shelf of the Wardrobe and when I took them down to wear the next day they were grey with dust! Improvements could be made! Bathroom lovely and clean the other thing I didn’t like was when I returned from nights out there’s no one there no reception and you feel like your walking into someone’s house it just has a weird feel to it like your alone! Also if your out and about in Newport it’s not an area to walk on your own late at night without getting bombarded with people begging for change and cigarettes! Would not return 

Visiting friends 

We saw a sign for the Gateway Hotel which turned out to be 42 Chepstow Road, rather than no 50 as the Express is advertised as. The receptionist was pleasant and explained both buildings were part of the hotel and they were only 4 doors apart. He gave us a key card and explained where to go. For the money it was great value. It was a spacious room and was generally clean and comfortable. The shower was fab, great water pressure and there were free toiletries available to use. There was free parking available.

Value for money

Strange hotel we checked in one then walked to another four doors  down front door was open then upstairs .we had a back bedroom twin room pillows lumpy sheets clean however mattress uncomfortable and a stain on the side of a mattress which needs replacing. The shower room was the size of a telephone box no where to put anything couldn't turn the shower unless you stepped in and had cold water on you not nice took a long time for the  hot water to come through. So you hot cold!!!!
We went out for our evening meal on return the next house there was a man urinating against a wall not nice to see especially for my granddaughter. 
Certainly  would not stay or recommend it too anyone. But price was very cheap and that's what you get!!!!
