We’ve stayed at The George several times before when visiting family in Dereham. We expected some changes due to COVID , such as no breakfast, but were disappointed to find no WiFi and a bar than shut at 9.30pm. We weren’t told this when booking. 

The room was ok except for the terrible mattress, macerator noisy toilet and water pipes that woke the dead. 

To be fair to the staff, they were friendly and accommodating 

Ok if you need somewhere to sleep

We went out with friends and as we travelled from Essex we booked a night at the George Hotel
Superb food, great bar, lovely room and Nick at the  bar really looked after us.
The locals wee so friendly and the delicious breakfast was one of the best.

Brexit Night In Dereham

First of all I come here a lot of the time and normally I really enjoy it. 
But my experience tonight has been disappointing.
I had the steak as a main and it was very average, no steak knives were given. We couldn’t ask for any as nobody came near us or even done a check back. We were not asked if we wanted anymore drinks. Had to wait for ages (15 mins) for plates to be cleared. Service was not good

Meal

Check in awful,  staff member sat on floor making table having private conversation and completely ignored.

Placed in what was in effect an old anmexw room back of hotel, after prior arrangements to have room at front of hotel. Stayed for 2 nights.  Truly waste of money.  Stayed at the other hotel in Dereham, and much better to be honest?

Supposed to be couple but told partner not to come

Welcoming staff. Room very clean. Toiletries supplied, which is always handy. Tea and coffee making facilities in room. 
It can be noisy because no double glazing and you are above a pub so what would you expect. Room lovely and warm. Extra heater supplied if needed! Comfy bed. Extra pillows supplied in wardrobe. 
Carpark with plenty of spaces. Walking distance to the town. 
Can not comment on the food because we did not eat there. 
Negative was that the water was extremely hot, shower difficult to get to the right temperature (either scorching or freezing) and toilet needed to be flushed two or three times to clear each time!

Visiting family 

We have become regular visitors to the George our experience has been that the food has been great and reasonably priced and the staff are polite and friendly. The George has become our go to place for family get togethers, meeting up with friends along with a evening out for just the two of us.

Lovely evenings

Stayed overnight following attendance at a wedding close by. What a disappointment. 

Were given keys to get in after hours (we got back from the wedding about 1am) but we were locked out. There was nobody on reception, so ringing the number on the key was pointless. Finally got in via another guests room - who had only managed to get into their room as they was a fire escape door to it. (They found the door was open!! So much for security of their belongings!) Once inside we found that one set of main doors were chained and padlocked - so no use in the event of a fire! 

Quite appalling really. We made our concerns known to a member of staff in the morning and she was going to pass them on to a manager. Nobody ever came to speak to us. 

Breakfast took almost an hour for us to be served, so we were around long enough for 'the manager' to come and find us. 

The hotel is a tired place, lacking in investment and is obviously not managed that well. Our room was just about OK, nothing new or impressive about it at all. The toilet / shower room was horrible. It STUNK to high heaven of cleaning products and the shower just dribbled rather than sprayed water.

This place is crying out for some major improvements - which is made will make it a top venue in the area.

The Fire Prevention People need to review this place ASAP!!!

Best place in Dereham for great food, atmosphere and service. Thanks Nick for the polite, courteous welcome. Food amazing, service from him was  exceptional too! Well worth the visit. Recommend haddock. Great selection of wines and spirits too.

Another fabulous meal

Called into The George yesterday as there are not many worthy choices in Dereham anymore... such a shame. Had Haddock and Chips (batter was a bit generous) and although I don’t usually do dessert I am a real sucker for an Eton Mess. Well worth the splurge indeed. The ladies running the bar and restaurant were friendly and welcoming. 

Great dessert and lovely relaxed atmosphere 

Great location. Lovely hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful.  Breakfast and dinner were wonderful.  Our room was amazing - 4 poster! I would definitely go again and have already given a recommendation to a friend who hopes to go soon.
