Such kind, thoughtful, loving hosts !  You can feel the warmth they exude as soon as you arrive, they also serve you tea and biscuits upon arrival which is a bonus . My sister arrived after I did and  my sister and her taxi driver were closeby the hotel but  they had a hard time finding it— they helped her so much! They used  their phone to call her, sent her taxi their phone number (b/c my sister didn’t have a good connection). they walked with me down the street to try and see if we could see them. In the end once we opened the door to try and find them , they had finally arrived! 
They always kindly greet guests, and care immensely about their guests. They went above and beyond . 
To boot, the hotel offers free breakfast and is very well located as it is  close to the centre. It’s a bit hidden so make sure you print out a map of it before u arrive, and ask your taxi driver for help finding it.

We loved it!

I stayed at the Dar Traki Medina de Tunis in October 2018. If you are the kind of person who likes staying in a beautifully restored historical building in the middle of a World Heritage Site Medina, the Dar Traki Medina de Tunis is for you!  

The rooms were clean, comfortable and very attractive, with great tile work, comfortable furniture and beautiful bathrooms. The rooms are very quiet, so you can sleep easily, and the view of the courtyard around which the hotel is situation is beautiful, with the sunlight coming in at different angles during the daytime.  

Breakfast is served in the courtyard. As I am vegan, the hotel staff went out of their way to prepare me special vegan meals.  There is also a beautiful, clean rooftop deck with comfortable cushions where you can enjoy the sun. The wifi also worked without a problem. 

The staff spoke Arabic and French, plus a little English.  For complicated issues, I typed them on my Google Translate program and showed it to them.  No problem!

I also arrived very late because of my ferry timing, and they were accommodating and waited up for me, plus spoke to my cab driver on the phone on the way over, to give him directions from the airport.  When I left, I had a late night flight and I was able to negotiate with them on staying for 1/2 a day for a partial payment on my room, so that I could use a shower and bathroom before a long flight, but not have to pay for an entire night.  They may not always have this flexibility because of room availability, but in this case they were able to be accommodating and i appreciated it.  They also then called a cab for me to the airport, making that part stress free.   

As for the location, being located right in the Medina is fantastic, as you can walk right out the door and be right in the middle of history.  The neighborhood also felt very safe, I was comfortable walking there late at night.  Much better than staying in the modern party of Tunis and having to make a trek over to the Medina.

Finally the price was well worth the value - clean, safe, friendly, great location.  Sure I could have found a somewhat cheaper place, but this was worth it because of how easy it made everything else.

Fantastic hotel, location and price

This place was absolutely amazing! Admittedly, we love a riad in the heart of an ancient medina, so we're already a bit biased from the start. But this one was quite fantastic.

We paid a bit more for a private section of the riad, and it was well worth the tiny upcharge. We had our own, lockable entryway that led to a small sitting room on the ground floor, with stairs leading up to our huge bedroom with its own sitting area and spacious private bathroom.

The bed was comfortable, and the water was consistently as hot as you could want it to be.

The two staff members were both polite, accommodating, and eager to help. They arranged a wonderful driver for us to visit Ras Angela and Ichkeul National Park and made the stay quite pleasant.

Riads can sometimes be difficult to find, even with a specific address. And Google maps will have you attempting to walk through walls. 

So, unless your taxi knows exactly how to get to the place, have the driver drop you at the pharmacy located at 27 Boulevard Bab Menara. You will see a row of trees lining the other side of the boulevard and, beyond them, a lower road running somewhat parallel to Bab Menara. Go down to that road and turn right onto Rue Abba just past the open parking lot. Walk east down Rue Abba until it dog-legs left and then turn immediately back to the right.  This puts you on Rue du Riche. Follow Rue du Riche until it runs into Rue Tourbet El Bey. Turn left at an angle onto Rue Tourbet El Bey. In less than 100 meters, you will see a white archway on your left with a tree growing right next to it (I've included a photo of the archway). Go through the archway to the end of the alley, and you will find Dar Traki.

Simple enough! Enjoy!

Medina Oasis in the Heart of Old Tunis

Very well placed in the Medina, the oldest part of the city, the 300 years old construction was retrofitted for a different and unique hotel! A very nice courtyard where you can take your breakfast and enjoy the atmosphere! The is very nice and are there carrying for your confort all the time.
Worth 100% the money!!!

Special, unique!!!

I've travelled in North Africa and the Middle East a little bit and I always like to try to stay in whatever the local version of a "riad" is: in Tunis, that's a dar. We found Dar Traki, read the reviews and thought that it was the place for us. In most Medinas and most houses, though, there is always a feeling of living amongst other tourists and travellers. I don't mean, specifically, those who stay in the house itself. Rather, I mean the areas where most of those houses are situated seem to be areas with lots of other similar places around. In Dar Traki, I did not find that to be the case. The house felt, not just in the Medina, but a part of it. That was exactly what we were looking for and what we found. And our stay was all the more pleasurable because of that. 

Because the trip was a mix of business and pleasure, we stayed significantly longer than most guests, so we got to know the staff a little better. They were super friendly and super helpful. Some (rudimentary) French might, sometimes, be required but we got along just fine. Recommendations from the staff are solid and they are more than willing to help you weave your way through the winding streets of the Medina. 

There is an underused roof terrace that is quite lovely, as long as you can avoid the heat! There are plenty of nice restaurants near by. The souk is a few minutes walk away. And the rest of the city is easily accessible by taxi. 

The only gripe I could make, if I have to make one at all, is that our room had a window that faced out into the street, rather than into the courtyard. I've never experienced this in a dar-style house before and it was a little noisier, as a result, although the street onto which it faces is hardly loud or busy and it had no material impact on our enjoyment of the stay. Indeed, perhaps quite the opposite. It was part of what made us feel like we were in a real neighbourhood. 

The most "real" place I've ever stayed

We took a ferry from Palermo to Tunis, which was quite an experience in patience (as was finding the passport control for foot passengers once in Tunis). Once we were "legal" we were originally going to find a way to take public transport (train or bus) to the medina. Because ferries dock on the opposite side of the port than cruise ships, we were nowhere near La Goulette (the cruise ship port area that is much more touristic) and, therefore, nowhere near public transport. We walked out and found a taxi to take us to the medina, and the staff of Dar Traki came to the edge of the medina to meet the taxi and walk us to the riad. The road we walked was being repaved, so the walk was a little rocky, but not an issue.

Once in, we were able to appreciate the beauty of Dar Traki. Decorated in old-world French-Tunisian style, it was warm and very welcoming, as were the two staff men (Roland and Doudou) there to make our stay pleasant and relaxed. We speak the very littlest of basic French, and they spoke the very littlest of basic English, so we were able to chop our way through instructions and questions. It was fun, honestly, to try and work our way through communication, and there were more than a few times we stood laughing at the silliness of trying to figure out a specific word or phrase.

Our room was lovely. We stayed in the room with the private terrace, and it was perfect. Morning reads were spent on the terrace, and we went down to the atrium to have breakfast. Speaking of, the breakfast was fresh and wonderful. I read another review (only one) who complained of rubbery cold omelette and stale pancake. This was quite simply not the case for our experience. Freshly prepared crepe, and an egg cooked to our liking. Fresh juice and croissant with butter and jam, along with coffee or tea. All served in a quiet and restful space.
I also read that people found it inconvenient to not have a key to the front door. This was not a problem for us. We stayed out until the hour we wished, and simply buzzed in to have someone come and open the door for us. The time was never an issue, and Roland and Doudou were always happy to see us. One afternoon, we came back after a particularly hot afternoon of exploring, and the staff came up to the room (unprompted by us) with cold drinks and a smile.

The medina can be VERY difficult to navigate, especially at night, when many of the alleys near the souk close, causing you to find a different route than the one you took to get in. The first night, this was a bit harrowing, but we were able to negotiate the route eventually, and were then able to do so easier in the subsequent evenings.
Carthage was wonderful. We hired a local taxi driver to take us around, and it was an affordable alternate to tours. He drove, and we explored. He also took us to Sidi Bou Said, which was more touristic, but beautiful.

If we are ever to visit Tunis again, we would definitely stay in Dar Traki.

Such a lovely, warm reception ...

This is in a great location in the Medina. Very quiet. The courtyard is lovely. 

The staff were so friendly and were hugely helpful. 

The garden suite is really great. We went in winter and the room was warm. The public areas which are outside were cold, so wrap up warm. 

Beware that the hotel will ask to be paid in cash. 

We arrived late, the hotel is very hard to find and not signposted, and on arrival the Medina can be a little intimidating in the dark. 2-3 people however kindly directed us. 

The wi-fi is at best intermittent. 

Lovely Ryad run by friendly hosts

A very beautiful property and great way to see the old Medina Quarter of Tunis. Rooms are beautiful and the Courtyard is an great place to just relax after walking all day in Medina. The staff are really friendly and always helpful with any questions even with the language barrier. Great Hotel and would recommend it to anyone who would love to stay in the old town.

Beautiful Property in The Old Town

The place is very central,  well restored and clean. If that’s enough for you, then it is perfect for you.
But if you want a more comfortable stay, especially if you have children, then you need to look elsewhere. 
The place is very hard to find and cars/taxis cannot reach that part of the old town. It took us an hour to find it at night and they were not answering the phone to give the taxi directions. 
There is minimal service, and no fridge in the room. You will need to ask reception to store water bottles or any food for you in their kitchen fridge (they refused to keep beer that I bought from the duty free in their fridge because they do not have an alcohol licence on the premises).
Also, hundreds of mosquitos await you in the room!
It is also important to say that it is not a safe place for young children (for example the roof terrace has no safety borders to prevent a child from plunging down to the central court!!). 
All in all it is not suitable for a family with young children or someone requiring more comfort in their stay. 
Unfortunately, I believe it is over-priced (and they only take cash payments). 

Beautiful place but uncomfortable stay

The place is really hard to find and was a nightmare on the first night roaming around the medina. On our third night there we were stopped by the police when walking back after dinner and told it was not safe to walk in medina at night.
Our main problem was the fact that it was cold and had no central heating only oil filled radiators which didn't adequately heat the room. The bathroom was basic and head came off shower and bath ran very slowly. On our last night due to cold and damp conditions plaster fell off wall into bath. Breakfast basic and bread/ croissant often dry.  It was expensive and quality not up to price.
