I've stayed at Kandy Hill Bungalow many times and my last stay was quite an interesting one. The hotel is under new management and they are trying their best to up the service levels and address some of the concerns people have had, like not having a proper restaurant. They are still a ways away, but it looks like they will get there eventually. 

For those of you who haven't been to this property before, Kandy Hill Bungalow is built around a lovely colonial bungalow that rests on top of a hill. As a result, each room comes with panoramic views of the mountains and certain parts of the city. Getting to the property could be a nightmare if you don't drive and have to get a tuk. But I personally think the view is actually worth the hassle. 

We stayed in the air-conditioned rooms this time and I'm happy to say they were maintained very well. My only gripe was with the showers as they lacked pressure during most parts of the day. The grounds were nicely maintained and I loved the addition of walkways, but unfortunately, the same can't be said about the state of the colonial building. It NEEDS a lot of care. 

I caught glimpses of the kitchen and I must say that I wouldn't really want to have a meal that's been cooked there. I think the management needs to look into this and make it a tad more hygienic or hygienic looking for that matter. 

All in all, if you are looking for serenity on a budget, Kandy Hill Bungalow would be your best best. There are some downsides (as in the case with most low priced accomodation), but if you are willing to overlook them and don't expect perfection, this will do just fine. 

I will be going back in a couple of months and I hope to see more improvements.

Serenity on a budget

We booked this entire bungalow for a period of 2 nights. The bungalow is located in a very mountainous and scenic location with stunning views of the lush verdant valley below and the surrounding mountains. The gardens of the bungalow are extensive and full of flowers and fruit trees, and there is also a spice garden for guests to explore by foot. Access to the bungalow is via a narrow one way road that I would recommending planning for in advance by getting a suitably sized vehicle in case you are travelling in a large group, as very long vehicles may perhaps be unsuitable for this road. The bungalow is a 15 minute drive from the main attractions in Kandy.

On arrival we were greeted by the staff with a welcome drink, and directed to our rooms. The rooms on the ground floor are a bit dated (i.e. from the colonial era) and could do with some modernisation, but nevertheless were comfortable and offer a unique 'colonial' experience. I feel the four rooms on the first floor were the most comfortable to live in due to them being newly built. The furnishings in the living room/common areas on the ground floor could also do with some tasteful updating, although it was comfortable and certainly did not impair our enjoyment of the bungalow. 

Being vegetarian we were not sure what Sri Lankan food the staff/cook could prepare for us but we were more than impressed with the wide range of curries and rice prepared for dinner, and the pol roti and side dishes prepared for breakfast. All in all we had nothing to fault regarding the food, and the staff were attentive and responsive to all our requests (note that you have to pay a reasonable amount extra for food). There was notably from time to time a problem in communication as some of the staff did not understand English well, but this was eventually overcome and did not impair our stay in any significant way.

Overall, we had a uniquely enjoyable stay at this bungalow with great accommodation and service, and we would gladly return in the future. This bungalow is particularly suitable for large groups/families.

Stunning location, great rooms, great service, ideal for families!

the bungalow is old and majestic, even though the structure is neglected and so is the garden. This place exuberates with character and grandeur of the colonial era. it was so sad to see such neglect.
the staff were friendly, helpful but having booked 3 rooms for 2 nights, we moved out on the second day as we were unhappy.

back to my roots

Group of 7 people we made the reservation on booking, where the pictures were all made in Photoshop! We couldn't stay there...there were big dead bugs on the floor, mould, dust on the furniture, the chicken were an improvisation, the widows were broken, the impact was really strong. 
I don't recommend!!!



Horrible!!

We reached there with the help of google maps and it wasn’t that difficult to locate the bungalow.
It seems to be a very old bungalow with a nice colonial design.
Staff was friendly and welcoming plus the food we got was worth for the money we paid.
But I gues the management could do a better job by renovating this bungalow properly because guests would love to stay in old rooms than staying in newly built rooms.
We would have loved if we got to find about the history of this place too.
