Coming down off of the mountain from Choquequirao was a tiring ordeal but Villa Los Loros was our oasis waiting with open arms. They gave us a wonderful place to stay and relax after our long trek. We had very specific food requests and they accommodated for every little tiny thing. They are great - don't miss out on this place if you are near Cusco.

Good providence led us to this beautiful Lodge at Tambobamba - a blessing indeed and we are hugely indebted to Pietrina and to Marco for all the help and great support that they so kindly gave us for successful and expeditious completion of our visit to Choquequirao.  Comfortable rooms, excellent hospitality and cuisine, cosy fire for the evening.  Rodrigo excels in the kitchen, and Emmanuel tends the beautiful gardens. Very many thanks to you all.

Beautiful rustic hotel on the banks of the river in scenic valley, was a welcome touch of comfort after difficult Choquequirao trek.  Cascade of hot water in the shower.  Delicious food.  Would love to have stayed a few days more just to relax and explore the valley.  Lots of interesting history Marco can tell you about the area.  

Notes on Huanipaca route to/from Choquequirao:
We did Choquequirao but didn't want to return by the same route to Cachora.  As of 7/15 the trail descending from the ruins to San Ignacio bridge on the river is open and in great shape.  Steep descent but much wider than I imagined.  At the bottom they have fixed concrete walkways in the most complicated part.  The bridge is fine but not suitable for mules to cross.  Also, not 100% sure mules can or are allowed to descend from the ruins to San Ignacio (our arriero said not possible, but not sure if that is true).  In any event, we carried our own backpacks down to the river and crossed, took about 4 hours.  At San Ignacio beach, still no services other than a bathroom but supposedly they are going to fix that up (workers, materials visible).  It is a steep climb up to the ex-hacienda and then from there a mostly level walk to Villa los Loros (5 miles).  We did it all ourselves carrying packs but in retrospect I would have arranged with the Lodge to have a mule/muleteer meet us at the beach to carry our stuff.  It is hot and with the packs made it pretty difficult.  The Lodge can also arrange transport back to Curahuasi where you can return to Cusco or wherever.  It costs S/100 but 100% worth it, it is a really long drive and you will not easily find public transport.

Bottom line: great place, great food, great alternate route (saves you from having to climb back up to Cachora).   Recommendation: arrange/reserve in advance with Pietrina in Cusco including transport and mule so you can have a hassle-free trek.

My family stayed here a few summers ago after hiking to Choquequirao. Marco (the owner) is a great guy and it was cool talking to him and hearing about how he came from Italy to start the hotel there as Choquequirao gained popularity. The hotel rooms (which are actually little houses spread out across the property) were nice and clean and the food was really good and fresh- with vegetables grown in the garden across the street, fish from the nearby stream, and eggs from Marco's chickens. If you're booking a Choquequirao trek, it'd be well worth it to request a stop here.

Excellent alternate ending to Choquequirao trek

Awesome place!

Very bad experience.
After our descent from Choquequirao, we were supposed to camp in this lodge.
We had arrived at dusk, around 17h.
Very tired, my mother who could hardly walk because she had knee pain.
We kindly asked the Italian owner to rent us a space to camp (because we had all the necessary equipment) she did not want. She absolutely wanted us to take rooms.
As it was dark, I asked if we could camp outside his lodge where there was a little lawn and pay him. She did not want because it was "her parking" (for info there was no car !!!)
As a last solution, we asked if she could call us a car to pick us up and take us to the nearest village "Huanipaca" (in the corner there is no network, and she has a radio, which she usually uses to call the car to pick up her guests).
She did not want to hear anything, and offered us one more time to rent us her rooms at an exorbitant price for the area !!!!!
So we decided to walk in the middle of the night to the village ... luckily we crossed in the road a car of a farmer who kindly took us to the village which was 15km .

All this to tell you that it is sad to see that there are people who benefit from the distress of others ...
