No tranquility at this hotel given the presence of a restaurant in the patio. From 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. you will hear music, moving tables, blenders, talking. Loud ambient noise removes all sense of tranquility and quiet from this Oaxaca property.

Very noisy given the patio restaurant

US friends needed a place for Day of the Dead.  Two months in advance nothing was available for two weeks then I remembered La Reja.  They had a large two bed room on the first floor.  It had a/c which was needed as the windows did not open.  It was very spacious, clean and in the best location in town.  Actually not having open windows is good for new folks to Oaxaca as frequent fireworks -- year round -- reverberate off the stone buildings.  The only complaint was that the restaurant in the courtyard opened early and they were near the kitchen but they quickly adapted to the low noise.  There is a small patio upstairs with nice views and the restaurant is great for coffee and pastries prepared in the Pan Am Bakery in front.  Due to the peso's fluctuation, I won't quite the price but it was a steal, 1/7 of the cost of a room in the Quinta Real Hotel across the street.  They highly recommend La Reja.

Location, value, quality - What's not to like?

Has a great view. The rooms are well lit up and not very noisy. It didn't set us back a lot of money so all in all, great!!!!

Amazing

Even the cab drivers don't know where it is, but it has one of the best locations in the city, one block from Santo Domingo and next door to the 5 star Quinta Real. This is the  perfect small hotel (8 rooms) with comfortable spotless rooms, quiet, beautiful courtyard,pleasant roof terrace with a view of Santo Domingo, delicious breakfasts, reasonable rates and a friendly, helpful staff. What more can you want? We have stayed here for a month at a time in 5 different years, including this March. This is the kind of place you are reluctant to tell people about, because you don't want it to become too popular, but at the same time you feel guilty to keep it a secret. We'll be back next year, hope to see you.

Oaxaca's best kept secret

We really enjoyed our stay.  The hotel is located a 10 minute walk from the "Zocalo" downtown square.  The staff were very friendly and pleasant.  No one spoke english really well but they made up for it with enthusiasum.  Our room was on the second floor which kept it more private than the ground floor rooms.  There are only 6 rooms in the hotel so it allowed us to get to know the staff and was a nice positive.
They have a 2 table rooftop patio that I took advantage of every morning.  They have small coffee pots in the rooms so I could make my own coffee early.  
The room was small but clean and pleasant.  It has a definite Mexican feel partly because it was converted from a house into a hotel with a courtyard for breakfast and lunch.
