Borneo Beachouse Backpackers

I stayed overnight here on a quick stop over in kota kinabalu. Being 10 minutes walk from the airport used by air asia, it was perfect for my early artivals and departures. Taxis are expensive when travelling solo and cost double the fee to stay in this place. 10 minutes walk to the beach and main eateries, or 10 minutes in the opposite direction to catch a bus to the centre and harbour. Staff are excellent, so accommodating. There is a kitchen, lounte and outdoor area. Basic interiors and bathroom not the cleanest but for backpackers, it's great.

If you are on a budget trip and expect nothing luxury, just want a simple stay, this is already perfect!
It was my first time traveling solo and it's for a month. Chosen Sabah as my destination and I did not do any bookings. Once alighted from the airport, I pick up a brochure with map, google for nearby dorms and saw Borneo Beachouse. Still, I didn't book it online. Decided to walk-in. So I call to check if there is a bed available for me and yes it is. And staff says it's a walking distance and the map does show that it's very near. I chose to walk with my 17kg bag.

But I purposely stop by a taxi driver just to check the price they charge for a short distance like that and they quote rm25. I was like wow. For a short distance? No way. So off I go. As you exit the airport, turn right, cross over and walk all the way till you see a lane to turn left, and continue walking. That's the shortcut. I didn't wanna take the risk so I walk all the way straight passing by the field and turn left at the traffic light. The sunset sky was beautiful. Love it.

Pass by the Perdana Park which is on the right and after crossing a lane, *that's where you'll come out if you use the shortcut route*, cross over and pass by a cafe called, 'Table No.1' a white building and you'll see 'Borneo Beachouse' on the left. Staff are friendly, especially when they learn that I walk all the way with that load. Rooms are very affordable.

Stayed here for almost 3 weeks and the staff has been awesome. At that time there were 4 interns from Philippines, 2 local full-time staff. All were extremely helpful, friendly, accommodating and hardworking. I really feel at home and have no problems getting around. The beach is just a 5mins walk. You can grab some bbq corns or chicken wings as you watch the sunset. Lovely. Blessed.

Overall stay was really awesome. Able to cook, great showers, but I hope they fixed the spoilt heater. And thanks to the boss who help me on my last day. It was awesome!

Budget but highly recommended

Always at Home with great Staff, Beach with Sunset views & Airport nearby!

Don't be fooled by the high ratings on here-I stayed here for one night in a twin room with a friend. The place was worn down, no working wifi or tv, the access gate is locked shut in the evening so you have to arrange a time with reception or ring their phone to be let in (you'd be stuck without a Malaysian SIM) and the bathroom was a joke-the bath/shower looked like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks, water came out of th side of the tap (kind of funny) and when loo roll was finished, we went to ask for some more to replace it and there wasn't any. In addition as some of the reviews say below, you cannot walk to the airport from here (or to central kk) and a taxi costs just as much as to the airport from central kk. There is a small parade of shops about ten minutes away but not much else other than the (not very nice) beach. It's a shame as with a bit of work, this place could be improved so much. The only saving grace was the half decent lounge area and kitchen, along with the helpful lady at reception.

Find somewhere else in kk to stay

The kota kinabalu airport has switched to a new terminal, the hostel is no longer walking distance from the airport, the only transport to there is only taxi and it cost RM30.00 one way.
Overall the hostel is ruined down, the room was really dirty with full of mosquitoes and dust, toilet is disguising, no any facilities were provided, air-con not functioning.
could not even sleep for a night

terrible and worst stay ever!

I stay for one night just before meeting my team for KK mount climbing next day. In order to save money, i choose a dorm. When i arrive the hostel, no people in front of counter. I wait there 15mins and finally use my mobile phone to give a ring to the hostel. As i call up, the phone rang and a guy jump up from second floor reaching the phone. Then I ask him to help me check in (staff). I am not given a key for the dorm and the door cannot be lock. No air cond is acceptable for the price however security is the big issue. I realise no guard on duty at night and they left their big door unlock whole night. The mattress is old and the linen is bad. I feel unsafe and hardly fall asleep that night. Definitely will not stay again in this hostel because it simply failed as a hostel in every aspect.
