50 000kip for a private room with bathroom. Clean and very good location. Wifi a bit slow though. The owner is always around so if you need anything je can help. This guesthouse has no restaurant but the street is full of cheap places to eat!

Not a bad place to stay in huay xai

Having been dropped at the wrong friendship guesthouse (yes there are two in this one-street town), we arrived at the actual place we'd booked and were pleasantly surprised. We had a standard double and it was lovely. Perfectly comfy and nicely decorated with an attractive looking seating area. Bathroom is a bit strange with the shower almost directly above the toilet and just a hole in the floor for a plug (which lets quite a few ants in) so this is the reason for 4/5 not 5/5. But certainly worth looking into if you're staying, like us, the night before the slow boat journey to Luang Prabang. Receptionist didn't have much English but got everything done swiftly and was pleasant enough. The building seems quite new and the view from the back end of the building is beautiful overlooking the Mekong. There's also a nice seating area out the back by the river. Reasonably priced place at 500 baht for the night. Baht seemingly the preferred currency of choice here as the kip vs baht battle always seems to offer better value in baht. Handy if, like us, you have some left over Baht knocking about. All in all, ideal and plenty comfortable enough for our one night stay.

Not to be mistaken with the other friendship guesthouse on this road

The proprietor is an old grouch but that shouldn't put you off this guest house. Location is very central but not noisy. The room and attached bathroom were clean, the bed firm but comfortable, and it was cheap at 50K kip.

Cheap but dirty and uncomfortable 

Checked into the Friendship guesthouse without too much difficulty although the desk girl didn't understand English very well and my Loatian is next to nil. An hour later my wife went out to get the WiFi password but the girl was talking on the phone and waved her away while shaking her head. Fifteen minutes later I went out to find her still talking on her cell phone. I showed her my Kindle with the WiFi screen up and she just shook her head and waved me away, while continuing to laugh and chat on her cell phone. I pointed to her, made the phone jesture, and pointed to the phone number and name of the contact person on posted behind the counter. Again she shook her head and jestured me away. 
    I am no slouch at communicating with jestures when my grasp of the local language is nil. There is no doubt in my mind that she knew what I wanted.  I have never in over fifty years of travelling ever felt I had to forfeit my money and leave a hotel room I had paid for, but that is just what we did.
