We stayed in one of these cottages for two nights during our trip to Yakushima and it was a great choice. The cost was very reasonable to have your own little apartment to stay in. 

The location is good with several decent restaurants within walking distance in the evenings and next to the main road with buses (if you take the bus) and not too far to drive to most of the main sites of the island from this spot.

The owner is lovely, makes you feel very welcome and knows everything there is to know about Yakushima. For example, I told her I'd like to do some river swimming (not a common request apparently!) and she directed me to a river where locals sometimes go for a swim in summer. Fabulous!

She also made sure we were aware there was going to be a rocket satelite launch from a neighbouring island one morning so we could go watch it. Very thoughtful!

 All in all, I highly recommend this place if you are staying on Yakushima.

Excellent value and wonderful service

I travelled with three friends to Yakushima, and after a two day thru-hike in the mountains we arrived at Cottage Kutsuroki soaked to the bone, cold and hungry. The owner of Cottage Kutsuroki, Hiroko-san, promptly welcomed us and set us up in the two cottages, and proceeded to give us slices of cut guava - what a thoughtful gesture. 

Hiroko-san then showed us around the cottage and explained a few nifty items which were well-tailored for hikers, e.g. there was a shoe-drying machine to dry your hiking boots. The cottage is spacious and for two people there is more than enough space to hang your clothes and dry your wet gear. I had space to dry my sleeping bag, sleeping pad, clothes, socks, etc after a very wet hike. 

There is a patio attached to the cottage, and on a warm morning it is perfect for hanging your clothes or just chilling out to enjoy the fresh air. 

The bathroom is a "wet shower room" so there is more than enough space to wash yourself and your gear. Other standard amenities such as fridge and kettle (and tea/coffee) are provided. Parking is free. 

Location-wise it can't be better. Cottage Kutsuroki is about a ten-minute walk from Anbo Port, a two-minute walk from the bus-stop (buses from the trailheads stop there), and between 5-20 minutes on foot to restaurants. Hiroko-san has a complete guide (and a beautiful map) for travellers, with fantastic recommendations for restaurants, things to do and see, onsens, bakeries and cafes. She was so warm and helpful she pro-actively made recommendations and reservations for us! To me, this sets Cottage Kutsuroki apart from other stays I have had at this price point. It is almost like having the hospitality you get in a luxury ryokan but at 1/10th of the price. She "checked-in" with us every time we get back to the cottage, asking us if everything was ok and if we needed anything. On the second day she gave us sliced star fruit drizzled with honey. I don't even get this kind of service at certain five star hotels !

On the day we checked out we had an early morning ferry to catch (7am), and Hiroko-san gave us a lift to the port at 6:30am - just an incredible gesture which made me feel as if I was staying with a friend. 

So if you want to stay in a clean, spacious cottage, personable and warm service, and get great value for what you pay for, be sure to stay here. I cannot recommend this place enough!

A true gem in Yakushima

Clean, functional, and comfortable. And yet it was quite reasonable. The owner, Hiroko, is really a good person and quite helpful.   When we go to Yakushima again I'm sure we are going to stay this place.
