Our trip to Nikko Inn was unforgettable...

The surrounding views were breathtaking, the apartments were beautifully crafted and the service from the guys at reception was perfect (thanks for the help with booking our buses). The combination of traditional tatami living and a contemporary design finish and facilities (the airplay feature was great for our music) made for a comfortable, peaceful and welcoming break from the busy streets of Tokyo.

And with a short 25-minute train to the World Heritage sites in Nikko, we would hugely recommend staying here for anyone who wants to feel in touch with the history and tradition of the region.

We will definitely be staying here again next time we're in Japan!

Nikko Inn-Credible!

Nikko Inn is a perfect place for groups of 3-6. It is NOT located in the middle of the town, however its location is beautiful, full of nature and tranquil views. That does mean though that you need travel some distance before getting to a convenience store to buy food. You will be heading into town daily via the train station thats a 2 min walk, so make sure to stock up on food and drinks before returning. You sleep on floor mattresses which are comfortable enough and the owners of the Inn are great hosts and very friendly. Amenities include 2 oil heaters, a rice makers, a kettle and kitchen utensils. Highly recommend for a few nights get away from Tokyo.

Traditional Japanese guest house in a beautiful location

We loved this traditional japanese house near to Nikko. It's very easy to access and well situated near to the train station. The team from Nikko Inn is really nice and helpful, they provide a lot of informations about the house and surrounding area. 
The house is well equiped with everything you need to cook, a perfect sound system! I warmly recommend this place! 

Very nice traditional japanese house near to Nikko

First things first: Make sure which house you are booking. We had booked "Sakura" for three nights, which has no countryside view whatsoever and is wedged right as the side of the train tracks. Check in was difficult as it took us a while to find the office building. During our stay, the lady responsible for guests (otherwise, this is a design studio), was only available at random hours - and those were definitely not the official reception hours, which we could have dealt with. When we went to the office during those, we were greeted by a surly lady telling us she can't help us and that we should call somebody else. We do speak Japanese but that didn't stop her from being rude and shoving an English printout in our faces instead of answering a simple question (what time reception would be staffed for check out). I do realise that this is not a hotel, but have never experienced such rude treatment in Japan. Note that all of the shops in the nearby village also seem to keep random hours, so the grocery shop that was meant to be open until 5.30 was already closed at 4 pm. 

Anyway, the house was clean, well equipped and beautiful, definitely a unique place to stay (which we did, mostly, because it rained buckets). It had been beautifully restored, although some minor things had started to fall apart. 

If you are a light sleeper and/or don't live in a major city, I would advise against staying here. Whether you book a house right by the rail line, be prepared to hear train noise every 15 minutes from 6 am to 10 pm. Another negative surprise was that we were charged more than we expected in our booking, due to a "silver week" surcharge that nobody informed us about until check out.

As you can see, I am on the fence with this one: I loved the concept and the house, but everything around it was a let down. Yet, it's much more affordable and authentic than paying the money for a ryokan.

A unique, sadly not too tranquil stay with sub-standard service

Nikko Inn was just what we needed. Sitting on the edge of a rice paddy field and with views onto nearby hills this was a perfect break from our hectic Tokyo lives. It was incredibly relaxing to wake up to this view for two mornings.  

Run by an art director (who also has a cafe in Tokyo called World Breakfast All Day - a personal favourite in Tokyo), our cabin Tsutsuji was the perfect juxtaposition of old and new. Referencing Japanese houses, there was an ordered and sparing approach to the fitout of the space. Tatami lines the floors and the shoji screen doors both diffused light and insulated the space on the cold Saturday evening. We stayed in on both nights and cooked, using the seasoning set (provided free of charge) the rice cooker and other accoutrements. It was simple and felt like a second and much more slower home...

When we checked out, we spoke to Masumi-san in our broken Japanese. Graciously she showed us their newest project - the old ShimoGoshiro station building which is being slowly converted to a shared accomodation space - once again a perfect balance of retaining what was existing with newer elements. 

We will be going back. Its a lovely place to base yourself and explore Nikko.
