I have no word to describe how magical our stay was. The atmosphere was amazing and very peaceful. Our breakfast and dinner were outstanding and the staff was very lovely and though they did not speak perfect english, they tried to understand us. We went to the morning prayer and we felt out of this world, back in ancient times, it was stunning! Note that the shower room is only accessible at specific hours.

Reviewed lot of review and select here to experience "Shukubo" - temple stay overnight with dinner and breakfast.  Young monks speak good English, you can understand well,  room with modern toliet is spacious, (8+4 tatami) for 2 persons, it's heaven compared to tiny hotel room in Osaka or Kyoto area.  We LOVE dinner - monk led us to our dining room, yes, not eat on our guest room but designated dining room. Dinner is a luxury veggie meal, tasty meal.  Overall we think it's very unique experience and recommend to whom may want to add this type experience to your travel history.

We were welcomed by a monk who could speak some English and having heard I was Italian told me that he loved Pirandello and Manzoni! The monastery is truly beautiful, with a peaceful inner garden we could enjoy from our room. It is quite close to the entrance of the Okunoin cemetery, which is a must see. Dinner was as expected, I am not a fan of Vegetarian cuisine 😄

An amazing experience!

Shukubo, unique travel experience, especially in foliage aeason

Great experience 

We wanted to visit Koyasan and make our visit special to stay in a monastery. We were welcomed by a very friendly monk who informed us, by using a translating device, about the time for dinner,  the morning ceremony and breakast. 

Our room was very spacious, had 2 small futon beds, a nice view on the garden, a heater, very hot streaming water, a typical Japanese toilet and television. Much more luxury than we expected in a monastery. 

Vegetarian diner and breakast were served in a large and non heated room for all guests (no monks attented diner or breakast). Non Japanese guests were put in a separate part of the room. Most of the food was cold but tasted nice. We didn't know everything we eat because there was no explanation. 
After diner we went to our room and the next morning we attended the ceremony at 6.30. This was the most impressive part of our stay. After the approximately 45 minutes ceremony a monk gave a short tour in the praying area. Unfortunately there was only one sentence spoken in English (by translating device) and the rest of the 15 minute tour was in Japanese.

For us this was a one time stay. Besides the morning ceremony we didn't have the feeling staying in a monastery. After all that was why we payed far more than normal for an accomodation. 

Nice but we expected more

Comfortable rooms with everything one need while travelling. Wash basin in a room and a private toilet. Shower can only be used in the evening. The place has little bit a military discipline. You must eat exactly at 6pm. Bedding is very wet and cold. You cannot warm it for a long time with the warmth of your body. A hot water bottles would be very helpful. After the morning ceremony, the guide talks about the temple. Unfortunately only in Japanese and there are no available materials in English. Nearby is a very interesting Buddhist cemetery. The cost of this “hotel” is not justified.

too comercialised

personally I think if prefer to sleep on floor, want to taste food (was not nice at all) , and bath in comunal (with others and NO clothes on) and early morning ceremony (which no one explain what is all about and didn't understand word or what is all happening) then this is the place. please check before book. this is only my opinion.
