This little hotel is run by Mrs. Iroko, the nicest and kindest person you will ever met! She is the perfect host: she helped us with the restaurants and took us by car everywhere. Thank you Iroko, you made our stay in Ishigaki absolutely unforgettable!

Amazing!

Most tourists who come to Ishigaki stay in one of the big hotels in the town, or in one of the big resorts. Bad mistake. The town is nothing special, and well away from all of the best bits of the island. Also, with the exception of Club Med, many of the resorts are a bit run down and in need of refurbishment. In the seven years I lived in Japan, I always liked staying in pensions. There are a number of reasons. They are invariably clean and well looked after, even if the rooms are not always as big as those of the resorts. I have yet to meet a pension owner in Japan who was not a nice, helpful person, and generally they try harder. They have to in order to compete with the big boys. Pensions are not always a cheap option - think of them more as boutique places to stay with a high level of personal service, but they are a good choice.
Pension ShimaTime overlooks Yonehara Beach, which is one of Ishigaki's best snorkeling beaches. (Technically you're not supposed to swim there, but nobody makes a fuss if you do.) It's also only a few minutes drive from Kabira Beach, with its glass bottom boats and a number of dive shops which will take you diving or snorkeling out into the bay and to Manta Point where, if you're lucky, you have a great chance of seeing one of nature's most incredible creatures. (We went with, and would recommend the Purity Dive Shop in Kabira - lovely people.) Kabira also houses the Setsukaya Izakaya - a great place to eat. The seafood salad is a bargain and very tasty.
So the location of the pension is good. It is also modern and clean, with spacious rooms by pension standards, and run by a lovely couple who go out of their way to help you with anything you need - including, in our case, taking us free of charge to see a magical display of fireflies. There is a guest laundry, and also that rarest of facilities in country Japan - wi-fi access. We only had breakfast there, but the food was good, with fresh home baked bread every morning. It helped that we speak Japanese, but the owners told us that they have had non-Japanese guests, and that they have usually been able to cope with the aid of an electronic translator.
All in all, we couldn't really fault the place. It was everything we hoped for, and the level of service made our stay genuinely memorable.
