Ryoso Kawaguchi is a wonderful traditional ryokan with amazingly friendly hosts and staff. We walked from the ferry both ways because the weather was nice and it was only a 10-minute walk, but the hosts provided their phone number to call for being picked up. Yoko Kawaguchi and her husband greeted us warmly, showed us our room, the dining room, and the private bath. The room was traditional, spacious, well equipped, and had a small balcony with a table and chairs overlooking a beautiful small garden. We signed up for the dinners and breakfasts with our reservation and were delighted with the delicious and varied meals, beautiful garden off the dining room, and helpful and friendly server, Kiyoki Kuroda. The dinners and breakfasts were as good or better than any meals we had in our 10-day trip to Kyushu and Miyajima, and we ate at several high end restaurants in Fukuoka. Kiyoki became our impish friend, making each meal both fun and delicious. He provided assistance and humor but never intruded on our privacy. Yoko was clearly in charge at all times, making sure our needs were met and providing friendly and helpful advice about things to do on the island. She scheduled our meals and private time in the Japanese bath. At the end of the day, the soak in the warm bath guaranteed a good night's sleep. We only stayed two nights and regretted not having longer to spend in Miyajima with our hosts when we left. We enthusiastically recommend this beautiful ryokan to anyone visiting Miyajima.

Peaceful, relaxing ryokan

Ryoso Kawaguchi is a family-owned Ryokan on Miyajima island. It is located on a more quite street but just a few steps away from the waterfront.
The room we had was equipped with its own toilet and had a little balcony overlooking a cute Japanese garden. The room was clean although the walls and appliances could well us a little brush up.
What caught us most at Ryoso Kawaguchi was the food prepared by the owners. The oyster dinner was imply amazing and we have not had comparable food at *-restaurants on our journey in Japan on that level. Every course had been prepared so tasteful, we even thought about staying another night had next hotel not already been booked.
Should we be in Japan again any time soon, we will be staying here for more than one night. The island itself makes for perfect excursions, once all the “other tourists” have taken the ferry back home again.

Come for the room, stay for the food

We stayed at the Inn for two nights while visiting the temples and shrines on Miyajima and loved it. The furnishings were comfortable but more than anything the hosts were amazing. They took such amazing care of us, as well as being charming and patient with our terribly japanese language skills (and were fortunately quite good with english)

Finding this ryokan wasn’t too difficult as the Miyajima tourist office helpfully provides a large display in the ferry building showing the location of the accommodation in the town.  The building is very old but has been tastefully updated and is very well managed by Yoko, the wife of the owner.

Our room was very spacious with a separate room for the futon beds and another room with a floor level table and seats.  We had an en-suite toilet but bathing is carried out in the two downstairs onsens which can be booked for private use and these were a great way to relax especially at the end of a day of sightseeing in the hot and humid conditions.  There is no safe in the room but Yoko can store valuables in her safe free of charge.  A nice touch was the gift of a traditional Japanese biscuit/cake left on your table after the room was made up each day.

We had one dinner and one breakfast during our stay and both of these were very good.  Miyajima is packed with visitors during the day but only a limited number of restaurants are open at night so it was really good that the ryokan provided an option of a delicious meal.

Yoko was very friendly and helpful making Ryoso Kawaguchi a really good place to stay in Miyajima.

The complementary pickup from the ferry terminal on arrival was highly appreciated, especially given the high temperatures in early September when we visited. The hotel was fantastic and the rooms were very comfortable. 

I would highly recommend opting to have dinner there. The food was outstanding and beautifully presented. The breakfast the next day was of a similar high standard.

Great place on Miyajima

Amazing place to stay in Miyajima. The Itsukushima Floating Torii Gate are right down the street and to the left is the Five Story Pagoda. Beautiful deers just roaming around. The Ryokan is cute and cozy. The rooms are located on second floor. The first floor has the dining room and shower/bath room. There is only 2 bathing room. Sign up for your desirable time slot to enjoy the onsen by yourself, bath 1 is larger than bath 2. Baths are only available at night, showers in the morning. Purchase the dinner if you can, it is the most amazing meal we’ve had so far. 2 dinner time slots 6:30pm or 7:00pm and for breakfast you have the choice of Japanese or Western breakfast at 7:30am, 8:00am or 8:30am. Everything served had bold flavors, it was heavenly. They also had children menu options as well. 


Surprise Ryokan

This is a beautiful ryokan we throughly enjoyed two nights at, with our tour group. We were very well looked after, arriving in a rainstorm, the owner dried off all our shoes and umbrellas whilst we were sleeping. The food presented here is excellent, both in taste and presentation. We loved ,loved, loved our stay here.  The bath was amazing and couples could use them together privately. Thank you for the wonderful stay. ❤️

Traditional ryokan stay

Yoko made us feel so at home and was very attentive to our needs. The location is perfect — a block away from the action so it was quiet yet you could get to anywhere quickly.  The private baths were so relaxing after a long day of walking the island.  We wish we could have stayed longer!

Amazing Ryokan!

Best ever Ryokan. I have slept in a few on this trip and feel little love and care from the proprietors. This mother and daughter team were amazing.  The place is well ordered and cared for by love. You can see it everywhere you look, In the rooms, Common areas, Dinning room, Baths ECT. When we were served dinner it must have been at least a 7 coarse meal. The presentation was incredible.  And more incredible were the dishes,  Totally prepared with love and pride and the taste, flavor, quality was second to none. I hardly give such high praise but this was well earned and well deserved. The building is over 300 years old, So full of history and charm. So very highly recommend this little place on this beautiful island. Sure there are other hotels on the island but nothing can match this treat and experience. 

Vacation 

My wife and I stayed there 2 nights last week as part of a Samauri Tour. Our package included breakfast and dinner, which were great.  The property is the nicest ryokan we stayed in while in Japan,  and the owner, Yokohama, is a great host.  There are also 2 private soaking baths, one for a couple and one for a single.  Very nice and relaxing! Great property on a great, relaxing island.  You will enjoy your time here!
