An excellent Onsen ryokan hotel located away from the crowds in Gora. Highly recommended. My room was spacious and beautiful and clean and had everything I needed and wanted. I had my own private Onsen tub in my room that sat on a balcony (it was open-air) with a beautiful view. The water was perfect. They have a public onsen too but I was too shy to use it. My kaiseki dinner and breakfast were served in my own private dining room (closed off from other diners). My server was excellent and the food was amazing. They were able to accommodate my request for no raw fish or raw meat. There were a lot of things on the menu which I had never tried before and I was a bit hesitant, but I just dove in and tried everything, and it all was so good. The hotel is beautiful and quiet. The service is excellent. There was a free pickup from the Hakone-Yumoto train station. The driver was very nice. English was no problem - I could communicate with everyone there. The only thing I was hesitant about was that they take your shoes when you arrive in the lobby and you have to wear slippers (that they provide) while in the hotel (because all the floors are tatami and outside shoes would ruin them). But I was very comfortable. Also, I am a plus-sized woman and was worried about the yukata not fitting me, but again, there was no problem. A truly wonderful experience!

Out-of-the-way hidden gem: highly recommended!

The magic of Gora Hanaougi starts from the moment you arrive. We took the sideways elevator down from Sounzan station and was greeted by staff even before the hotel entrance, ushered in like celebrities to the lounge where tea and sweets are served. 

The rooms are just amazing even for Hakone standards, we had an uninterrupted view of the mountain ranges from our private balcony onsen. Lots of other hotels in the area with private in-room onsens had shutters completely obstructing the view for privacy concerns, but Gora Hanaougi is the perfect place. Our room even had a sound system where you could bring your own CDs or simply Bluetooth. The only criticism I have is that our couch was very dated and old. But who's sitting on the couch when there's a gorgeous onsen with stunning views?!

Then there's the breakfast and dinner banquets showcasing seasonal produce, they are absolute artworks to behold and a joy to participate in. Head chef Nakamura is a master and we were very lucky to have the opportunity to indulge in his craft.

The staff really take hospitality to the next level, it puts alot of supposed "high-end" western hotels to shame. Thank you all for a memorable stay!

Luxury onsen hotel

This place is amazing. Our room with the beautiful view and the hot tub from the hot springs on the deck was just awesome. We were just there for one night and very much enjoyed the Japanese dinner and breakfast. Would also recommend the Open Air Hakone Museum. It has a big collection of Picassos as well as just a lovely setting. The cable cars to Lake Ashi are also a great experience and very beautiful. We didn't get a good view of Mount Fuji but still really enjoyed it.

An Exceptional Place

Yes, we did discover amazing buckwheat pillows here, but... this place is so much more!  It was one of the most beautiful experiences of our lives.  It is nestled in the forest, surrounded by beauty, tranquility and peace.  The deck overlooking the hills, with our own onsen (hot tub) was exquisite.  (The main onsen was beautiful too.). We felt absolutely special and pampered by the staff and we fell in love with our hostess.  It was an oasis in an otherwise hustle-bustle country.  The food was outstanding; so many courses and so many varieties.  They adjusted it all for us because we don't eat meat.  Wearing yukatas (summer kimonos) was such a lovely experience.  It is near many tourist attractions, and yes, we saw a hazy Mount Fuji close to here. We can't say enough about this beautiful place.

A Japanese Experience You Don't Want to Miss

We were in Japan for 2 weeks and our stay in Hakone was chosen to be our 'blow out' of the trip, with Gora Hanaougi being our priciest stay - so we had high expectations! We loved it. 
We chose to stay in a large room (211), it had a sitting room, a separate lounge, a double bedroom and outdoor shower and private onsen on the balcony. The views were absolutely spectacular and I spent most mornings drinking tea and just gazing at it.
The team are wonderful, especially our host and the woman who served our dinner and breakfast each day.
We stayed for three days, which meant we had three dinners and breakfasts. Each in our own private dining room. I will confess that I'm new to Japanese cuisine, and am also quite nervy of fish, and was so grateful that they amended our menus each night so I could eat more conservatively and my partner could be less fussy! They didn't make me feel awkward or embarrassed, and I was so grateful that they accommodated me. Each menu was completely different each day.
We had a massage each (wonderful) and used the public onsen as well as our private one. I was delighted and surprised that they allowed my tattoos, I hadn't expected that (or assumed it, I know they're a problem in Japan).
Getting around Hakone and Gora without a car requires use of buses, cable cars, ropeways and even boats - we loved it! The hotel team helped us navigate and there is a shuttle to Gora if required. 
We spent our last few nights in Japan at this wonderful Ryokan and we kept saying that we couldn't have made a better choice.  What an experience. We miss it.

Wonderful, luxurious, beautiful and tranquil

I was in the suite for 3 nights, upon arrival they picked me up at gora station in less than 10 minutes, the staff is very attentive and the facilitties are beautiful, the food was extraordinary, the price per night may seem high but is wort every penny

The service rendered by the staff was impeccable - Joshua, Aiyumi and the watchman plus all staff who worked there ensured we were well taken care of and provided excellent assistance particularly on transport arrangements. Food was a lot and great. The private onsen in our room was excellent and my son enjoyed it. The public onsen with the outdoor garden was beautiful, my daughter and I enjoyed it very much. We will be back again.

The staff of the Gora Hanaougi and their culinary team are all exceptional. Every need was met with kindness and consideration, and in some cases some needs were met before they were expressed because of the staffs dedicated observation. I have never received such a high level of care and every amenity was provided and the rooms were spacious and beautiful. The kaiseki meals were all beautiful and delicious. The private onsen was convenient and private. The staff were also very helpful in providing gentle guidance of the various etiquettes surrounding onsen/Ryokan culture. Though my Japanese is essentially non existent, communication was never an issue.

Amazing location, luxurious cottage-like feel, great views, cozy private onsen and outstanding service.
