There isn't a great deal to do in Safed but the hostel is perfectly located for what there is to do - the artists' colony - about 300 feet away and the markets. It's around about a 15-20 minute partially uphill walk from the bus stop or a 10 minutes taxi ride.  You can't get directly to the hostel's front in a taxi but you can get within about 20 metres. The rest has to be walked downhill on a cobbled stone ramp or stairs. 

Inside the hostel, there's a large communal kitchen area with fridge and tea and coffee, milk supplied. Behind that door is two levels of rooms as well as a communal seating area on top of the kitchen space offering views over the rooftops and mountains. Rooms are clean enough but you know that as soon as you see a bathroom with a squeegee mop, the shower is going to gush everywhere. Having mastered the art of closing the shower screen doors before turning the shower on fully and becoming a deft hand with the squeegee mop, I was able to leave the bathroom floor reasonably dry and not flooded after my shower on day number two. The rooms could have done with a bathmat or an extra towel - one is barely adequate when your feet continue to get wet in the process of mastering your black belt in the oriental art of soaking shower squeegee origami. Otherwise, they were ok'ishly clean rooms with a cave-like coolness downstairs to not need the air con on despite Israel's baking hot weather. 

Oddly, the hostel was very quiet with no one around! Upon arrival, around 6pm, we found nobody at the property to let us in and found an obliging, English-speaking local who called the owner on our behalf to get the press-button front door code. Once in, we found our rooms with our names printed-out on A4 paper, taped to the room doors with keys in the door ready. Very much a 'help yourself' scenario but it would have helped to have known this in advance and be supplied with the door code. Interestingly, another traveler, who had been walking around trying to find a way in, also came rushing over to get in once we had the main front door open. It was June and sunny so I'm not sure when the peak tourist season is in Safed but the "fend for yourself" situation would be a challenge if you turned-up later in the evening and couldn't find a helpful, English-speaking Israeli (and there few and far between in the hills). If you are staying there, and by all means, it's actually not a bad place to stay, I would suggest you email the property ahead of time to find-out how to get in (main front door code, etc) in case there is no one there to greet you.
