Our 2 day stay at the Guesthouse Filokalia made our visit to Portaria special. On arrival we were unexpectedly given a room upgrade at no extra charge. The room, which was one of nicest we have had while in Greece, was spacious, tastefully decorated and included a small sitting room with a functioning fireplace. We even had a small balcony with views over the Pelion. The generous double bed was very comfortable and while small, the ensuite bathroom was spotless and very functional. A generous breakfast that includes fresh juice, coffee, eggs, toast and pastries was served in the shaded garden and is included in the room rate. While it doesn’t have onsite car parking, a free parking area is conveniently located directly opposite the guesthouse and we had no difficulty in securing a space when were there. The real stars, however, are Katerina and Violeta who are incredibly warm and welcoming hosts. Great value for money with the added bonus of getting to spend time with genuinely lovely people.

simplicity is the key...

We were here for 2 nights. It wasn't full so we got a bigger room with no extra charge. The breakfast was very good.
But the highlight was our hostess, Catherina. One of the nicest people in the world, and I mean it.

Lovely rooms the deluxe was far bigger and worth the extra euros.  Shower rooms on the small side but adequate and great value for money.  Rooms were clean and comfortable. We were leaving early next morning and the family got up early to give us breakfast. What a feast with boiled eggs,breads 3 types of cake, homemade jams and honey. Cheese and ham toasties, coffee tea etc. we were even given a gift a packet of mountain tea.

Great place to stay

This is a great choice. The room is quite large, with a king-size bed, a divan, a little living room, a fireplace (we never used it, but still), windows all around and hand-painted(!!) decorations on the walls and ceiling. Everything in here is traditional and feels like an old house in a remote mountain village. Windows overlook at the rural part of the village, the cool breeze will make the summer nights enjoyable, and the roosters will get you up in the morning to roam around the countryside. Mosquitos may get on your nerves at first as there is no mosquito net on the windows, but nothing you won't cope with when using some mosquito-repellant. The owners are very polite, helpful and obliging. They serve a rich and delicious breakfast in the garden every morning and when you're gone, they clean the room and tidy everything for you. The entrance is on the main road of the village, so careful if you have children with you. Although, you'll probably have to drag them away from the garden as a red-ish fluffy kitten who likes being petted resides there.
PS: As in all traditional guest houses, there's no elevator.
