Avoid this place, because of total lack of friendliness. 
Pancakes are really not edible. I suspect they have been warmed up in a microwave. 
The bill was not correct either (too high.....) Not even an excuse for the mistake.

The rooms in the attic were comfortable and the management are friendly. The castle is only 100m away and there are cafes close by as well as the restaurant downstairs. Wifi is not so good in the top bedroom but in the lower rooms it's fine. Free Parking is on the Main Street nearby or at the church. We were there Pentacost weekend and the Sat night music event was good but long (after 1.30am) so sleep was difficult. The fireworks were terrific!

Lovely accommodation in great location

We stayed one night.  The hostess was welcoming and very tolerant of my poor French.  She had some English but made a great effort to communicate with us.  The room was spacious but had a beam running down the middle which made walking on one side of the beam difficult for DH.  The bathroom door was a curtain, the shower was a hand held in a tub that you could not stand up in.  There was a skylight with a beautiful view of the stars.  The room was quiet.  I think Villandry is quiet at night.  Breakfast was very good with yogurt, jams and crepes.  Our bikes were safely stored in a locked courtyard.  Wifi was not great. We went to the restaurant and had wine while we checked mail.  This may be a problem in older buildings.

Quirky, not always in a good way

The welcome (we stayed last year) was very warm and all service was lovely. My wife has a funny diet which was very thoughtfully catered for.  It is not a standard hotel but rooms above the deli/cafe with beams and funny stairs but is charming and our room had been refurbished to a good standard. 
We ate there both nights - the menu is limited but all home-made, and well made. And lots of good advice on places to visit.

One of a kind

The place is nice and friendly. It is located in the centre of Villandry close to the castle and lovely church. It was clean and we could leave bicycles safe and go for a nite walk around the village (we were doing Loire a velo with a friend).The downside is that there is no wifi/internet.

Friendly staff

We were delighted that we chose Epicerie Gourande over a regular budget hotel for our one night stop over. We were a family of 4 with a baby, travelling in August 2014.

The accommodation is delightful, perfectly clean and well decorated, with an olde world traditional french ambience. The main double bedroom, adjoining small lounge area and bathroom are in the roof on the 2nd floor with wooden beams. The additional bedroom (2 beds) and breakfast room are on the first floor, all above the shop / bar.

The (wine) shop and bar are fairly small and very quiet, they do not intrude on your stay.
The breakfast of fruit juice and bread with preserves, and tea / coffee, was served at a time of our choice.

Any down sides? - when we were there the bathroom didn't have a door fitted, and the internal staircase would be difficult for the elderly, but that was all.

A really enjoyable stay, no hesitation in recommending it.
