I have read a few of the poor reviews about this place, and they must obviously be from past ownership. I’m coming up on week 2 of staying at The Sole Mare and the stay has been nothing short of fantastic. The location is just close enough to town that you can find the action if you’re looking for it, but just far enough away that it is plenty quiet to get in touch with your internal Self. 
Benecio, Francisco, and Pauletta (hope I spelled those right) have been incredible. Very attentive hosts that actually care about how my stay is going. I often seeing them sweeping the main parts of the hostel every morning, going the extra mile. The rooms are simple and nice, but the views from the beach are spectacular (see pics). There is coffee every morning and tea in the afternoon. 
There is a yoga/surfing all around the hostel. And Shankha, the restaurant two doors down, might be the best offering in all of Montanita. I eat there 3-4 times a week. The beach bar next door also has meaningful gatherings every evening at sunset, which gives a solo traveler like me just enough connection to stay sane. It’s safe. It’s quiet. It’s beautiful and clean. And the value for the money is unmatched!
I would definitely recommend staying here! I’m most likely going to be here all of April.

Amazing location with super friendly/attentive service.

Hostal Sole Mare, at the north end of Montañita Beach, is a welcome respite from the noise and bustle of town. We stayed there during the Labor Day holiday, and it was great to be just far enough away that we heard the ocean instead of the omnipresent house music.

The owners of the hotel are gracious and friendly. They happily provided information on everything from travel arrangements to surfing to security. The accommodations are clean and comfortable. All in all, a good find.

Welcoming hosts in a comfortable setting

We originally planned to stay at this hostel for one or two nights but we fell in love with it so we stayed for 5! The location is a 10 minute walk from the centre along the beach. It was perfect as you can get away from the noise of the town and it is directly opposite the prime spot for surfers. Every morning we ate our delicious (included) breakfast on the sea front watching them. The owner Carlos is super friendly and full of advice. He clearly cares a lot about his hostel and hopes to make sure everyone has the best stay. The rooms and communal areas were always clean. Our only advice is that it's not the best place to meet other young backpackers.

Paradise in Montanita 

We arrived in Montanita with no hotel reservation and I took a stroll down the beach at the quieter Northern end of the village and I spotted Hostal Sole Mare. I was greeted by Carlos the owner and was pleasantly surprised that he speaks good English. He showed me to a beach facing room on the second floor (room 4) and we agreed a price and I took the room for two days.

It was functional, basic and clean with a double bed plus bunk beds which were useful for storing bags etc. The bathroom was small with a shower with hot water and good pressure. The rooms face onto a communal balcony overlooking the beach with chairs, tables and hammocks. The only downside of this is if you have inconsiderate neighbours and unfortunately we had a family who felt it was ok to let the kids kick a football around and talk loudly before 7am!

There are a few nice low key bars and restaurants a couple of minutes walk along the beach. We stayed on a weekend and had no noise from them, unlike in the centre of the village 10 minutes away which would be very noisy. It was nice to go to sleep listening to the crash of the waves and to watch the surfers from the balcony.

We decided to stay another night but had to move rooms to room 4 which was further along the balcony. This wasn’t directly facing the beach and was smaller but was still clean and functional. We did notice more noise from adjoining rooms in this room though such as toilets flushing etc.

Breakfast is included in the room rate and was simple- eggs and toast but was tasty enough. We had a mechanical problem with our rental car and Carlos and his friendly daughter, who also speaks excellent English helped us in speaking to the rental company and arranging a replacement which was very helpful.

In summary, it’s basic beachfront accommodation in a great location if you want to be away from the main part of the village but within walking distance. The rooms are clean and the owners are friendly and helpful.We enjoyed our stay here.

Nice Beachfront Hostel with Friendly Owners

This was terrific value for being directly on the beach. It’s located close enough to the fun/action yet far enough away that it’s quiet at night. Rooms were simple and basic but very clean. Towels were provided. Staff was friendly and helpful. 
Breakfast was simple (1 egg, 2 pieces of toast with jam, juice/coffee) but you could purchase more for $2. I recommend and would return here for certain!

Fantastic Find

The hostel is right in front of the beach, beautiful house, quiet place, 10 minutes away from the city centre by foot.
You could expect so much more from such a privileged location. It has a great potential.
However there is not love to detail or probably lack of staff.
The room wasn't cleaned by the cleaning lady during the entire stay, the breakfast was very poor and low quality. 
Annoying the fact that you have to give the key to the owner every time you leave the hotel. If you arrive at 3 am you will have to wake him up in order to get your key.
Too bad there isn't a bar. It is so beautiful outside but just not well treated.
You can see the lack of tidiness and love to detail by looking at the owner: dirty shirt and with holes.
I have been in better hostels paying less, even though it was cheap.
