This hotel is above average for the price. We were looking for an under $50. hotel and found this gem. The rooms are spacious, clean, with fridge, hot water, tv cable, elevators, comfy bed, and vent type air conditioning (that doesn't rattle). The free breakfast on the 3rd floor leaves something to be desired since it was only bread, jam, butter, instant coffee,and juice, but for an extra $1.60  you can get something better.  You can't beat the price for $36.00 since it's fairly close to the Malecon. Be sure to ask to see 2 or 3 rooms for a choice and get an inner room away from a window unless you like to hear traffic noise through the night. We booked by just walking in.


Great Bargain for the Price!

Stayed for one night with wife to explore Guayaquil the next day, but at $35 it is definitely not worth it. The pros are that the location is good and you can have a nice, not too far walk over to the malecon while exploring the various shops along the way, and the people are nice. 

The major problem is that the room is more like a $15 per night room. A bed with sheets and pillows that died many years ago, no nightstand or bedlamp, an air conditioning setup with just and on-off switch (very cold a/c) so you would have to get up and turn the a/c off when it gets very cold, no toiletries except for two slivers of soap, and the free Internet is too slow to be functional. The room, hallways and premises are clean.

Breakfast advertised as complimentary included some small buns, butter, jelly, bad coffee, and two glasses of rasperry juice that we declined since it is not safe to drink any fruit juices in Ecuador if it does not come from a sealed bottle (restaurants usually tell you that they boil the water to make the juice, but don't take the chance--I have had the experience several times before I learned my lesson; and never take ice for your drinks, always from the bottle is the best way to go). We had brunch in a restaurant at the Malecon.

I would not recommend this place even for the budget traveler. Look around. The Internet can make any place look good when it really isn't. This one falls into that category.

Not Worth It

We have been staying in Sol de Oro for one night at the end of December. I found the rooms rather dirty and people at the reception unfriendly. The restaurant is not good at all and the quality of breakfast terrible. We had to count bottles in the minibar and afterwords to sign for it. I do not recommend this place, though it should be ok for a one night stay as the price seems to be fairly good for Guayaquil hotels.


Dump

Though I had paid for this hotel, the staff was insistent I hadn't. I showed them proof via receipt and bank statement. One staff member was incoherent, as he was simply unresponsive to everything I said/asked. The other would not listen, and continued to be unhelpful. 
We finally cut our losses and left to stay elsewhere, as we were not going to be charged twice to stay at a hotel lacking in customer service and cleanliness.

Huge mistake

We spent three nights at Hotel Sol de Oro. Our first chore was to purchase a bottle of anti bacterial bathroom cleaner as the room we stayed in was filthy. Our bare feet were black from the hotel room floor. We cleaned the bathroom, the table and night table and various other spots in the room. We tried to clean some of the floor but it only brought up more dirt. They claim they have WiFi, but only in the lobby. This was a small disaster for me as I needed to do some work. They tried to fix the WiFi for me but with no success. The price was right for us, the room was spacious, but the lack of cleanliness and lack of WiFi was unacceptable. 

The employees were very helpful to us and friendly, but that is not enough for me to consider staying there again.
