Ideal location in the nook of a back road, an easy stroll from the bus station, Coco's & Ricky's (both great people-watching spots while liming with a chilled Pilsner). Equally close if you turn right is Cahuita Park, though you'll hear the howlers from everywhere around here.
Elodie was hospitable. The place is rustic, kind of shabby, could be cleaner, the eponymous garden a bit rough & tumble & not much of a secret. I see there have been very negative reviews over the last couple of years, but all I can say is that SG fitted my modest requirements just fine at a great price.  

Good Nook

Looking for a covid safe place? Don't stay here. No one was masked. The hostel is run down and the staff will pretend to be nice but if they have the ability to, will write a negative review on you. They did this to me. Accused me of coming in late, though on the phone said "Not a problem! We wait for you!" THEN, while staying ALONE, a guest told them I was screaming and woke him/her up. I don't talk to myself, folks! I don't even pray out loud. Without even asking me about the situation, wrote about that on a review as well. Last, they made up some story about me complaining about a tour. This place doesn't even book tours that I know of. RUN THE OTHER WAY and STAY SOMEPLACE ELSE.

Don't waste your time or $ and not COVID friendly.

I really don’t recommend this place. It looks beautiful but the people who work here are criminals. 
We sent them an email telling them that we wouldn't make it before 8pm due to the long line of immigrations in San José. They told us that it wasn’t possible to check in after 8pm and that we had to stay at another place. The next day when we got the hostel and wanted to check in for our second night, they told us they had cancelled the reservation due to “no show” and gave the room to other guests. 
This means we payed for the two nights without staying there and without them telling us about the cancellation beforehand. And they got paid twice for the room.
We felt very mistreated and betrayed. That’s why we don’t recommend this place. This is no way to treat other people and especially not guests. 
We have read many other reviews of people to whom happened the same thing. It feels like the owners do this on purpose. 
Please book another hostel and don’t support this criminal doing. 
We are very disappointed with our first experience in Costa Rica and we don’t wish that on anyone else. 
We only hope that Karma will do its job.

Don’t recommend this place!!

We arrived to the incredibly snobby French owner telling us she cancelled our reservation. She made no effort to contact us beforehand and treated us incredibly rudely, scoffing at us and offering no apology or sympathy whatsoever. An unbelievable level of inhospitality. This place deserves absolutely nobody's business.

Unbelievably rude

They are running a scam out of this place. They took my money, and then refused to let me back into the place. Left me stranded in the middle of the night! Worst experience I've ever had at a hostel. I've heard many similar complaints around Cahuita

Worst hostel ever

The owners of the hostel were really rude and treated us very bad! We had booked and already payed a private room for 2 nights. But after 1 night we returned from a trip and they had just thrown all of our luggage and personal belongings (including valuables) out of the room and said we had checked out too late. Which obviously we hadn’t. After their mistake they didn’t even feel sorry for grabbing our private stuff (and messing it up) and just said we can search for a new hostel if we want.

Worst behavior of the hostel staff

My friend and I arrived at 8.45pm. The owners refused to let us in, saying they were closed for check ins, even though it says reception closes at 10pm. The man got physically aggressive, even trying to choke my friend until another traveller stopped him. The lady owner told us to get out, it's private property and that she "has a life, you know?". Absolutely despicable behaviour. RUDE RUDE RUDE. Stay away from this place. We had to find other accommodation, even though we had paid. The worst experience I've encountered from a hostel in my years of traveling.

AGGRESSIVE, RUDE OWNERS! REFUSED TO LET US IN!

My boyfriend and I unfortunately booked a 2 night stay in a private room at secret garden. We were checked into a room where the lock to the side of the door outside was broken. So basically, when you’re away during the day anyone is able to walk into your room! The next day, we were out the entire day and got back until the evening. We were never notified or asked if we accepted their so called “house cleaning service”. One of the owners (woman) came up to my boyfriend and rudely asked him IN FRONT OF OTHER GUESTS why was the toilet not flushed before departure. For starters, the toilet does not flush and when asked before hand they said it had to do with toilet paper being flushed down. However, we didn’t flush any toilet paper down! It simply doesn’t flush! We then both asked why was she even in our room? She claimed to have been “cleaning” however there was nothing clean about the room because she didn’t even make the bed! I’m still trying to figure out what type of cleaning she actually did???!!!


Unprofessional, Unsafe and Poorly Kept  

We arrived late and tired, and so took the first place that had free beds walking from bus station to town centre.  It was a big disappointment as we came in from quite far to spend our holidays in the north costa rican carribean coast. Their pictures are much nicer than the place actually is and is really run down, especially the kitchen and not worth the price unless you are really desperate.  Some of the other backpackers were nice to meet and chat with despite all the mosquitos. We had some beers and dinner half kilometer away by foot. We left the next morning for Puerto Viejo and stayed there the rest of the week.  i should have read the tripadvisor reviews before arriving.
