Beautiful. Fantastic. The Real Deal. We've traveled extensively - all over the world. (Pick a continent. Pick a country.) One searches for the genuine experiences - and a stay at Chalet Nicholas is just such an experience.

The treasure here is waking up to the sounds of oropendula, howler monkeys or Cathy's troupe of toucans. Not to mention the 'boom' of The Arenal Volcano. 

And there are not many hotels on earth in which your entry is surrounded by grapefruit and banana trees, orchids and all the sounds of Nature...

Did we mention the Arenal Volcano, one of the most active (terrestrial) volcanoes on earth? Or the warm welcome you'll receive from Cathy and John, and their band of beautiful Great Danes?

Loved that wonderful place! If you like amazing birds (the photos don't lie), fantastic views and great hosts then this place is for you. Oh ... and if you are a dog lover, you are in for a treat too! We stayed four nights, the rooms are most comfortable and clean, the breakfast was delicious. Thank you, Cathy and John! 

Kathy and John are two of the best bed and breakfast hosts i have run across, both are incredibly knowledgeable and willing to help you get a sense of the area. 

Their location is perfect for someone looking to getup early in the morning to the sound of the jungle and walk out onto the patio for a breathtaking view of Lake Arenal.

I will be definitely be coming back again!

My husband and I arrived just before the daylight's fade, and were immediately escorted by three spectaculatly cordial Great Danes to meet our hosts, who welcomed us to join them on the front porch for a spectacular view of the sunset on Lake Arenal. We conversed over a delightful cacophony birdsong, monkey chatter, and insect clatter, and immediately felt right at home. 
At every excursion into town during our two night stay, we bumped into locals who used the word "love" to describe our hosts. Maria, the cook, made delicious breakfasts each morning, and was more than willing to patiently engage in conversation with me in my beginner Spanish. 
The second day of our visit, John agreed to take us along on his daily hike with the Danes through the rainforest behind the property. It was an honor to share a  slice of John and Catherine's extraordinary lives.

We loved this place during our exploration of CR! It was a great break from the heat of the beaches. The views were wonderful, the house a wood trimmed chalet is a perfect fit for the natural environment. Birdwatching, relaxing on the porch in rockers and a guided hiking tour of the rainforest were most delightful. They even gave me a list of birds that visit their feeders so I could check off those I spotted. It was a highlight! Birds I've never seen before. Watching 3 toucans, within arms reach, come down and eat bananas from John's hand was a real treat! This was one of my favorite experiences, we'd highly recommend it. 
Contact them directly and do bring cash to pay for the rooms, as TripAdvisor doesn't actually book this for you. 

Stayed here with 2 friends - we got the private loft upstairs, with 2 bedrooms (1 has 2 twin beds, 1 has a double bed) and a private 1/2 bath. You do share the full bath downstairs with other guests, as it is off of the living room.

Coffee and breakfast were great - Maria, the housekeeper was super sweet & nice and tried to help us with our Spanish! Breakfast was delicious and served at 8am, at a big family style dining table. No menu of course, but you won't be disappointed by her cooking.

The hosts were very nice, as were their 3 Great Danes. Super sweet and playful. Everything was very clean and the parking was easy.

The Waze app was a little off with the location - just drive a little further, around the bend, and the driveway is on the right!

Recommend: Stop at the German Bakery that is just about 1-1.5 miles before the Chalet if you're looking for something delicous!
