SleepyFish Lodge

I've stayed in Sleepyfish Lodge as a single female traveler and felt safe during the whole stay. The check-in was easy and they could arrange pick-ups for you from airport, train station etc. The staff could speak good English and are very responsive even via email before arrival. 

Rooms are clean and has hot water showers provided. With the weather in Dali being cool all the time, you don't need any aircon but they provided you a rotating standing fan if you even feel you need one. Even in the warm summer days, I don't need it. 

Recommend if you are looking for simple lodging for a quiet break. Rooms have balconies that you can use to chill or just soak in the Dali mountains. 

We love the Sleepy Fish Lodge. We come here each time we visit Dali and it's so relaxing. The rooms are clean and quaint=perfect. The rooms are so beautiful as well. Each room has a deck, perfect for the mornings and evenings. The beds have heated blankets for the winter time. It's in a quiet location of the Ancient Town. The food and service is fabulous. They answer all our questions and even get to know us. We love the hospitality! We definitely recommend coming and staying at the Sleepy Fish while in Dali. 

This is a well run and beautiful hostel, owned by westerners, with a big closed garden, lots of seating, and a tasty breakfast. It is conveniently located on the east side of Dali old town with easy access to the 8 bus stop to and from Xiaguan. The hostel loan good quality bikes cheaply, and can provide good local advice for making the most of your time in the area. 

This has to be one of the best hostels we've come across and it wasn't even our hostel! Having been recommended to go to Blue Gecho by our hostel (five elements) for some home comfort western food, we met Max. (If you want a break from Chinese after a long time travelling we highly recommend eating here, the food was amazing!) Max was incredibly friendly and helpful giving us a plan for our one day we had in Dali. She invited us down to her hostel, SleepyFish, in the morning for more information and bikes to take on an adventure around the beautiful lake. She really went out of her way to help 3 girls who she had no obligation to help, was incredibly friendly and genuine. When we returned from our bike ride the member of staff on reception once again went above and beyond to help people not staying at the hostel. She recommended great places to eat and printed our Vietnamese visas for us as our hostels printer had broken. Honestly I don't think our review is doing the hostel or it's staff justice but there's a little taster of the kind of service you will receive from sleepy fish. Thank you max for making our last day in china so great!! Would definitely choose to stay here if we ever come to Dali again! 

I first came across Sleepy Fish Lodge from reading online travel blogs and upon further research, I was immediately attracted to its location. It is near the East Gate of Dali Old City, and this makes it very convenient to visit the Erhai Lake or to take a stroll in the Old City, or even to the other attractions around Dali such as the Three Pagodas Park and the Cangshan .

Upon entrance I was immediately greeted by its lush garden and inner courtyard, which really makes it stand out as a land of serenity among the hustle and bustle of the commercialized Dali Old City. The standard rooms are also really clean and spacious (for a solo traveller); and if you do decide to have breakfast there I highly recommend having the “breakfast set” that they have as it is very worth the money.

The staff is perhaps another highlight of the Lodge, for they are helpful and attentive to my needs. Feel free to ask them for meal recommendations or tips on itinerary-planning while in Dali; and you won’t be disappointed! As they have a well-developed network around Dali, you could also get amenities (e-bike rental) or entrance tickets (for certain attractions) at a discount. Personally, I was very thankful to the staff for helping me to plan my itinerary for my two days in Dali; and the trouble they had to go through to help me to rent an e-bike even when I don’t exactly know how to ride it yet…

And to top it off, the golden retriever in the yard is super friendly and definitely added a sense of charm to the Lodge. However, the only problem that I potentially see is perhaps the fact that most compounds around the Lodge rear their own dogs and when they bark at night it might be a disturbance to travellers who wish to have an early rest. But if you are one of those who wear earplugs to sleep, then it might not be a problem after all :)
