My wife and I live in Kampot and when we go to Phnom Penh to shop, and we stay at the Lux because the one bedroom apartment has a freezer for our frozen food we buy, its convenient for our shopping and there are also always tuk-tuks out front. In our recent July 2024 visit we were almost stuck in a malfunctioning elevator twice. The second time with staff and a trolly as he was helping us take packages to our room. He was really scared!. I spoke with another hotel guest and he said he was almost stick in it also. The elevator was allowed to run like that for more than a day and the staff knew about it. Also, I got sick on the half-cooked eggs on the hotel buffet. These were not the worst things in our visit. We were checking out, our taxi was outside, loaded with doors open The housekeeping staff phoned the front desk and told then a coffee cup was missing from our room. The front desk/manager acted like we were trying to steal the cup, and this was in front of other customers!!. They would not let us leave until we paid $5.00 for the cup. If we refused to pay would they have called the Police? I told them that while we were washing the cup it fell and broke on the hard hotel tile floor. What would have happened if we broke a dish? Would they have charged us $10.00 or a glass $7.00, or the TV stopped working $200.00 or a fan stopped working $100.00? I told the staff that the day before my wife and I had been in a commercial restaurant supply store to buy things for our home and I saw the same cup for $1.25. After a lot of phone calls and hold up, the staff said we were "such good customers" we could leave without paying the $5.00. What about embarrassing us in front of other customers and holding up our taxi??  I have stayed at the Lux for 13 years because its very convenient, but bad things are starting to out weigh the good. Also everything in the hotel is getting kind of old and worn out.

Worst Experience of staying at the Lux for 13 years.

We stayed in a one bedroom apartment over New Year.  The apartment was fine - a bit basic and the cooker did not work as it had no gas but we did not complain as we ate out all the time.  The air con worked well thank goodness as it was hot.

The apartments are close to the river and the night market and so are in a good spot.  Not that that matters much as if you install the Grab app, you can get a tuk tuk anywhere for a dollar or two.

The thing I did not like is that the street is full of girlie bars.  Per se that is not the issue but it attracts heaps of single men aged 50 to 70, many of them looking plain seedy.  The hotel itself has quite a few of them staying, as you will see at breakfast.  A few of them are arrogant towards the Cambodians - ironic really as those same Cambodians are such lovely people and far more so than some of those men.

I would not want to put anything off staying at the hotel - it is fine, seemed quite safe, was clean and the staff were delightful.  But it is worth being aware of the area.

Apartments are fine - the area is seedy

The location is great. The hotel room booked through third party is value for money with breakfast sufficient for my needs. Initially, I was given a room with no window at all. But, on request, Srey Mom arranged a room with a window saying it was a free upgrade.  Thanks to her. The room was clean.  Most staff in the breakfast area were struggling to talk in English. I understand there is a shortage of staff in Phnom Penh.

Stay was good with many options for lunch/dinner outside the hotel.

The Managers were not honest with us.  All the extra fees including the room cleaning which was not done well added up our final bill.  They also told us that we could pay monthly and that if we left at half month we could pay half month.  We stayed for 2.5 months and the third month the charged us the full month and added on every extra little expense to our bill that they could including a spoon that cleaners later found under furniture.  Nice people up front but Management was not fair to us.

This place has seen much better days and is now being held together through constant renovation and maintenance. Have stayed in apartments there over many years coming and going. Every apartment has a problem. Some have water pipes running close to the bed head and keep the customer awake.

Last time I stayed was woken up by a construction crewing jack-hammering the floor directly under my apartment. This went on for two weeks. Started as early as 7am.

The building is in the middle of the bar and nightlife area so convenient if you are partying. 

Be prepared for prostitutes coming in and out of the building with, usually old men. Busiest at night with these activities.Also, there will be drunks around.

Sleezy location and sleezy building although the staff are very willing to help and are polite and efficient.

Lots of smoking in the building although this is not allowed.

Shower heads fall off, internet stops working sometimes and is very slow.

The air conditioners don't work properly as they are old and the owners will not replace them as they make so much money from people running useless air conditioners all the time trying to get their apartments cooler.

If staying in the apartments then be prepared for $US 100-150 p/m extra in electricity charges.

If paying in cash change your US$ first into riel in the market and then pay your bill with riel as the market rate of around 4,135 is much better than the 4,000 per dollar you will pay for your room.

All the furniture is hard wood and some have cushions but the rooms are uncomfortable & there are bare walls.

There is lots of noise from above as people scrape their chairs on hard tile floors and this can continue all night. There are no carpets and the chair feet don't have proper felt bottoms to eliminate the noise. A very easy fix which they don't do.

Lots of banging noises from other rooms.

The south side of the building's apartments are very hot and immpossible to cool with the clapped-out air conditioning units.

The north side apartments cool more but have other problems like loud constant noise from other building's generators/machinery. Also there is a microwave tower running from floor 7 to the top of the building right outside the bedrooms of the apartments.

Cooking is with gas but the stoves often don't work well and maintenance has to come and fix.

With the collapse of major currencies against the US$ these apartments/hotel rooms are now very expensive compared to before Covid.

Overall, I would not stay here unless I was doing a lot of nightlife and the price was around $US 5-600 p/m for a one bedroom apartment.

Noisy, Expensive, Sleezy & Uncomfortable

Both day shift and night shift staff were friendly and helpful. We stayed here twice in a standard king room.
Both our rooms had everything working just fine. Clean, fresh linens and excellent lighting.
Segregated shower area with good hot water and pressure.
The buffet breakfast for me was fried eggs/omelet, bacon and toast. Enough to last me all day.
I used the hotel's taxi contact twice, to Sihanoukville and to the airport. Prices were equal to anything you can find online. I recommend.
Your guaranteed a comfortable stay at this hotel.

This hotel is excellent. Good location and reasonably priced. I have stayed here many times. At one visit I was unwell and the staff were very caring and even went out to get something from a pharmacy for me. They checked with me to make sure I was ok and got food for me. I could not be more impressed. Would recommend this hotel highly.

Great stuff great rooms responsible price good breakfast very clean comfortable bed close to everything. Lot's of TV channels in English great air-conditioned room and also shower is great I will definitely come back to this hotel next time I am in phnom penh Cambodia.

Best hotel for night life

Centrally located, just next to riverside. Well  maintained. Rooms are decently spaced, neat and tidy. Special mention to Ms.SreeMon for excellent hospitality. Walking distance from Central Market and Night Market.
