Excellent accommodation, which in the wet season sits on top of the water! Friendly staff, good food. Excellent fishing guide also points out wildlife to give a complete service. Many animals and birds seen, including snakes and cayman! Also, horse riding through the flooded plains! Fishing was excellent, next time I need to bring stronger equipment as my UK rigs were broken by some big fish! Managed to land some smaller catfish though - cachara, Pintado, jau, palmito. I would definitely return.

Awesome fishing in Pantanal

I am totally satisfied of my stay !
all was good : food, room, wifi, organization, excursions, see animals
I could see tatoos, many caimans, beautiful birds, capibaras, wild pigs, coatis, etc. and even a jaguar (that was far, 200 meters) !

Staff uninterested. Not too friendly. 
Tourist interests are subordinated hotel interests, especially if you have booked a tour program. Not willing to adapt time schedule to our requests. 
Personal impression: no one smiles (whatever that means).

I cannot recommend this hotel

Were here with the husband (he came for the fishing) and 2 kids (we came for animal watching). He loved it and so did we. There were some options for us - day use at Fazenda Sao Joao, excellent horse ride (got to see the tamandua-mirim and deer!), animals came literally to our door as the hotel is located in the very heart of Pantanal (the whole hotel is on water) - caimans, capibaras, iguanas, even got to see a couple of anhiumas with their babies. There were also boat rides (ariranhas in the river, caimans, monkeys) and canoe rides. Try to come in August/September - great for fishing and for spotting the jaguar!!! we didn't get to see it... will have to come back.

Worth the stay for fishing and nature tourism

Stayed here for 3 nights at the beginning of December when it was literally empty and we were the only guests... which was lovely for a couple of days as it was really quiet and we got to do all the tours on our own. In the evenings a few more people in the large restaurant, which is really the only option locally, would have been nice, but hey. The food was OK if a bit repetitive Brazilian staples (rice, beans, two types of meat, a bit of fish, some fired things). We asked for Piranha Soup one night, which is a local delicacy and it turned out superb. Almost like a lobster bisque. Ask for it. It was the best thing we had all week. Our room was ok, with a very good mattress and a decent shower. Otherwise it's a bit basic (with a very noisy air con), but it didn't really matter as the main attraction is the outdoor wildlife. Nice raised wooden walkways bring you face to face with a wide range of amazing birds and beasts. Loved it. We did a river trip with their guide Bugre, which was lovely and produced a lot more different birds and even a giant otter family. But we were unlucky with the nighttime search for a jaguar. We had seen tracks on the road but didn't find her that night. A day trip to the fazenda was also nice. Nature pure. Worth the trip.

It's all about the outdoors

At this ranch with about 5.000 acres of land, you experience the grasslands of The Pantanal away from the rivers. You also get a closer look at a typical Brazilian ranch and the cowboy life. It is a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery on horseback. It is also a good place to spot Hyacinth Macaw as they nest nearby, due to a local conservation program. 
The rooms are more or less clean, however due to budget beds, unsafe showers (due to open wires), very limited breakfast and lack of wifi, it is not worth the expensive price (compared to other lodges in the area).

Authentic ranch life at Sao Joao, but expensive compared to other options in the area

We booked our Pantanal trip with Pantanal Discovery, of which Gil is the owner. We can definitely recommend Gil. However, this review is about the Sao Joao fazenda. 

We stayed four days at fazenda Sao Joao, part of Passo do Lontra company. We had an amazing experience there. The fazenda is a huge operative farm in the middle of the Pantanal, where they breed their own horses and have about 1500 cows. We could experience the day to day life on a Pantanal farm, as we were only staying there with a handful of other tourists. From the fazenda, we did a lot of excursions with our guide Alex, including horseback riding, jeep tour, piranha fishing, sunrise walk, night walk and we booked a boat tour and a private horse tour by ourselves. 

The Pantanal itself is amazing, as you probably know if you plan on going. We saw a lot of wildlife, including the very rare giant otter. However, your stay in the Pantanal can differ a lot depending on your accomodation. We can absolutely recommend Fazenda Sao Joao, as you will sleep in the middle of the Pantanal (other accomodations are close to a village or the river), you will only be there with a couple of other tourists, but with a lot of cowboys and other farm employees. Rooms and food are nice, transfers are well organized. The best experience of our stay was with our guide Alex, which knew absolutely everything about the Pantanal: the characteristics of all animals, plants, Pantaneiro way of life. On top of that, he spoke perfect English and was really friendly and helpful. And cool, a real cowboy.

In short, if you want to have an authentic experience of a Pantaneira fazenda, and if you want to stay in the middle of the Pantanal and not in a luxurious lodge on the edge, speak to Gil of Pantanal Discovery and say that you want to stay at the Fazenda Sao Joao and ask for guide Alex.

On a side note: we see people complaining about the price. However, everything in the Pantanal will be expensive, if its not, its not good. Your time in the Pantanal will be an experience you wont forget, definitely worth the money.
