Ginga Hostel

:) A gorgeous architect house, in a nice residential area, nearby city center; Happy smiling/professional/friendly staff/managers, brand new comfortable/design/ultra clean dorm/bathroom; They have computers, a big american kitchen, barbecue dvd, snooker...We travelled all around South America...and Ginga has been our favorite place to relax and spend some happy days; Also they propose lots of excursions around Belo Horizonte; Thanxs Ginga Hostel!

Belo Horizonte is not an interesting city compared to all the chill beautiful places  in Brazil, but the staff are some of the best I have met in this country. Everyone was great. Natália in particular speaks perfect English and gave me a ton of recommendations not just for the surrounding area, but also small chill surf towns in bahia, chapada diamantina, etc for my later travels. She also looked out for me without even my knowing about it or asking -- asking some other Brazilian travelers to take me with them to beautiful Inhotim,  which was WAY easier than trying to navigate on my own. Someone on staff even decided to bake a fresh cake for breakfast one of the three days I was there, and it made breakfast so much better! Plus I had a great time making friends with other guests, both foreign and Brazilian. Something here just ensures all the people are awesome. Slight downside is that the 2 (?) dorm rooms without bathroom all share a single bathroom on the second floor.  Totally fine for low season when I went, probably not ideal for busy times.

We stayed a week in Ginga Hostel. They have bilingual staff and offer a lot of interesting activities, like daily tours and pub crawls. There are a lot of interesting sights in the city. You can visit also the historical cities nearby or do some ecosports, like trekking, bike tours, waterfalls etc. Clean, save place and best localization!

I was a bit worried coming to Belo Horizonte by myself with really bad portuguese. Thanks to the guys at Ginga I got the most out of my trip there. What a charming city! The hostel was clean and safe. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Thanks for the great time! I hope I can come back for the world cup

Great time in Belo

Perfect!

We stayed here for four nights during the World Cup. Despite minor inconveniences (kitchen not well equipped, some staff not speaking a single word of English), the hostel had a great and big common area, so meeting other guests, watching the games together and cooking our meals was pleasant and easy. 

Unfortunately I couldnt say the same about sleeping quality: this place quite simply offers the worst double rooms I have ever seen in a hostel (and trust me I have tried hundreds of them over the years). 

The room we got on our first night was their "best" room, located right above the reception and tv area. We could hear the tv sound, the people talking, as well as the phone and door bell of the reception just as if we were downstairs. The window had no curtain and was poorly isolated as well. All the furniture seemed to have been made by an amateur, as nothing was functional (the door of the bathroom did not close at all, the bed, shower, and sinks looked half finished). The main light was weak and uncomfortable for the eyes. There was no heater and the tiny blanket was not sufficient to keep us warm. Water pressure was weak. 

Our request for a room change did not cause much surprise to the staff. Though the one we received for our remaining three nights was cheaper and much smaller, we were denied a discount on the ground that we had originally (and in fact unintentionally) booked the bigger one. Our new room was located on the ground floor between the kitchen and washing machine. Though a bit "better" in terms of isolation, it was still terrible by all standards. The noisy washing machine RIGHT IN FRONT of our door was in use all day long. We could still hear people talking just as if we were in the living room with them. Worst of all is the fact that the bed was 15cm too short for me, even though I'm only 178cm tall (5 feet 9)! 

Unless you want to give a try to the dorms (people did not seem to complain much about them), or value the good vibes of a common area above sleep quality, I would not recommend staying here. One thing is for sure: stay far away from the double rooms.
