it is a traditional guest house in blue mountains.
Beds are comfortable and you can relax in a lounge shared by guests.The log fire is lit in winter time and gives cosy atmosphere.
Some facilities are shared but you sometimes get what you pay and for the price it is both comfortable and has old charm.

budget hotel

We were on a budget and decided to stay here because of the reasonable rates. The whole building had seen better days and the first clue that some funds needed to be spent was the neglected tennis court and the hole in the window in the sitting room added to the feeling of crumbling glory. However there were comfy chairs and a period sitting room that looked as though it dated back to the 30's. The staff were charming and helpful and our room was clean and fresh and they clearly loved their old hotel.
. It was particularly cold and the windows in our room didn't shut properly so we had the little heater on all night. My husband noticed that the corner section of our room seemed to be parting company with the window frame and the whole lot looked as if it may collapse.
However the huge woodburner in the sitting room and the tasty breakfast together with the interesting untouched period detail more than made up for this.

Interesting vintage hotel

Usually Celia & travel a bit upmarket but we were only over-nighting in Katoomba, playing music in a bar that night and then being picked up before dawn for a trip to Capertee Valley so paying as little as possible seemed sensible. And at the Cecil you pay as little as anywhere so ir represents very good value.

Firstly the good parts. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming even if the place was a little disorganised. We'd booked on line and confirmed by phone and we were written down in some book but not the one at the desk. That didn't present a problem and they quickly showed us to our room. The staff don't look like the sort of hotel staff we normally deal with but it didn't stop them being charming. Secondly the bed was very comfortable with fresh, clean sheets. Thirdly there was a huge welcoming sitting room with a tremendous log-fire [very welcome as it was below freezing outside. Fourthly the staff were happy with us having as many heaters on in out room as we wanted. Fifth they provided a help yourself breakfast as part of the extremely low cost. We left very early so we actually didn't have the breakfast so can't comment on its quality but for the price............ Finally there is a large off-street car park.

Now the not so good. The place is shabby - not dirty, just shabby, and would need a lot of money spending on it to make it anything other than very shabby. An example was that a couple of the glass panes in our room were cracked. This is especially true of shared areas like the hall, tea-room and breakfast area. 

The rooms, whilst large, were very cluttered and quite shabby. We had the family room with a double bed and a single and it may have been that a simple double room would have been less cluttered. The room had obviously been a large room which had an-suite bathroom parachuted in making the room a really odd shape. There were twp door into the room, one wasn't in use and had a door across it but there had been no attempt to plaster over this door it was just stuck in the middle of the wall. Similarly there were joins in the ceiling paper which suggested that at some time there had been two rooms but no-one had thought to decorate this as one!
Our room was also very cold and especially the bathroom which was functional but not somewhere you wanted to spend time. We were provided with electric blankets but neither seemed to work [in fairness that may have been due to my incompetence rather than the blankets.

Finally it is extra-ordinarily difficult to find if you are approaching from the south as you can't see the sign until you are past it by which time you are looking the wrong way! Once you know where it is then it's fine but better instructions on how to find it on the website would be good

Pleasant staff and sitting room but you get what you pay for

The Cecil Guesthouse is located off Katoomba Street and can be a bit tricky to find at night. There is a narrow alley leading to the guesthouse and its parking lot. However, the location is excellent as its very close to a Coles mart and the town centre which has many restaurants and shopping options. The room itself was a bit old and run down but very clean and comfortable. Breakfast included toast, breakfast cereals and fruits. The wi-fi was a bit unreliable on the day we stayed. Overall the place was nice but I would not call it value for money.

Comfortable stay

Stay there for winter magic.. The place it dated and in need of help of a face lift. it is in a prime location off the main street but thats it. I know its a budget hotel but i have stayed there twice each time it got worst i booked  last year 6month in advanced a room with  ensuite and when i arrived with my pregnant wife was told they had double booked the room and given us a shared bathroom room.
