My best friend and I have used this wonderful Inn as a girls' getaway for years!  It is charming and t he breakfast is wonderful!   We haven't been there for a few because of other obligations, but are planning to visit soon...so I was very dismayed at the 2 star review.  To me it's like 'coming home'...especially when Colin (Anne's delightful grandson, who's probably quite grownup, but maybe not quite a teen yet) is on the premises and plays his fiddle.
Anne's home, for that is what it is, is always open to her guests, who, if very lucky, become like family!   THIS is why we stay...a little wear is good for the soul, and when you leave, again, if you are lucky, your soul is revived!

Been coming for years!

At first glance online Glencoe Inn catches your eye as a quaint, clean respite.  It was quite the opposite, from the sidewalk the curb appeal was in serious need of TLC, as you approach the porch you are greeted by an overgrown rose bush, furniture and other clutter that indicated this bed and breakfast was not ready for its first summer guests.  The home is populated with too many of Anne's flee market finds.  Anne was a joy and very knowledgeable of the surrounding area.  We were notified less than 48 hours that the central air was not working and given the option to cancel - well in the 11th hour it was hard to wrap your mind around trying to schedule somewhere else.  The pictures online speak to a garden that is peaceful and quite but we were not allowed access - because the gardener had not come yet for the season.  When you open your bed and breakfast up for guest all aspects of the facility should be ready to receive your guest.  There was a television in the room but it did not work, couldn't figure out how to get "just a local channel" and neither could Anne.  The guest robes that hung on the bathroom door appeared to have been there since last year (obvious Glencoe needs help in every sense of the word).  The proprietor was very friendly but I would opt out for cleanliness and not a hoarder atmosphere both inside and outside.

Put Your Blinders On

Anne, the owner, is the treasure of Glencoe!!
The home is comfortable and homey!  This was the end of a 10 day trip and I was tired.  What a great nights sleep I had in a beautiful room with a river view!

And then I had her Scottish eggs!!  OMG!!!  Those along with her beautiful Scottish brogue..........what a great treat!

I'll definitely stay there again!

Wonderful, comfortable inn!!

Just a terrific bed and breakfast! Our room on the third floor was attractive, spacious, and private (amenities included a private bath, deck, fridge, microwave and TV, to say nothing of the good food). The location was not just close to the water, but also in walking distance of both historic and downtown Portsmouth, with the ferry to Norfolk proper only two-and-a-half blocks away. 

Best of all was the proprietor, Anne McGlynn, and her family. She was friendly, helpful, and “real”—to say nothing of having led a very interesting life. Anne's proud of her Scottish heritage, with satisfying slices of history and culture shared throughout the house. (My wife and I were also fortunate enough to hear some exhilirating  Scottish fiddling, played live by one of Anne's formally trained and very talented grandsons, during our stay.)

I'm already looking forward to our next visit.

Great place to stay, in a great area to visit

Look we stay with Anne every year whilst in Portsmouth for work and after 4 years it's about time I left a review, only my second on here.   We visit each year for a week and its like visiting family.  The best breakfast and a nice deck on the third floor to enjoy a glass of port of an evening.  Short walk to everything.  Forget the big hotels, stay here and enjoy.
