We love staying at Half-Mile Farm when we go to Highlands, NC. It is located just outside the downtown area, but you feel like you are far out in the country. It is beautiful, relaxing, the staff is very friendly, the breakfasts are wonderful, and the property is unique (with rustic log cabins for those who want extra privacy and a bit of "pioneer" experience.

We've stayed a several places in and near Highglands over the years, but this is by far our favorite and where we love to go with friends and family who ahve never been there. We've stayed in the Main House and three of the five cabins (Captains, Justice, and Fish) and highly recommend you try the cabins, if available. 

Half-Mile Farm is owned by Old Edwards Inn. The cabins are owned by individuals, but marketed, booked and serviced through Half-Mile Farm. Each one is different and unique. We like the Captain best and it can by combined with the Fish for more than one couple. [Note: This is an adult property and children are not allowed.]

They have an on-site spa (Serenity Spa) that is staffed by the same people at the Old Edwards Inn Spa. However, we have never been able to book a massage on-site and have had to book Old Edwards Inn, which is wonderful, but we'd like to try the Serenity Spa facilities one day.

The chef does a really nice breakfast every morning. You can do his creation of teh day or order something else... but we have never been disappointed by the chef's special. 

Bottom Line: If you have never stayed at Half-Mile Farm, then you have missed out on one of the best parts of getting away to Highlands. Most people don't even know ot's there... and now that You know about it - I hope it's still has availability the next time we get up there!

A Hidden Treasure and Unique Experience

Life's sent me to many exclusive ... even iconic ... hotels around the globe.  I have very high standards for hospitality. I don't mind paying for excellence, but I want value for my money. Half-Mile Farm delivers ...  

Indeed, Half-Mile Farm is my favorite property in the Southeast US ... far and away.   

Without family nearby, we went here for Christmas. We loved the tree-trimming party and Christmas Dinner. We enjoyed being with others ... and being on our own when we liked. 

I LOVE Half-Mile Farm's privacy. NO outsiders are allowed on the property. You can pass the time of day with others in the communal areas.  HMF does not allow children or pets so you can enjoy the peace and quiet you've worked so hard for. 

The physical facility is superb. Activities are of the 'priceless' sort: sitting outside at night and roasting marshmallows. Rowing a boat out onto the lake. Dropping in a fishing line and maybe catching dinner. 

The service is excellent. No bowing and scraping, just prompt, pleasant attention. Because service industry workers are hard to find, HMF adds international staff on J1 visas who are young and work hard. They are a real addition to the experience.  

The food's socko, especially as the kitchen is rather small. Great breakfast for an inn, then 'bar food' available until ten-ish. Think a private chef who makes you a tomato soup and grilled cheese that'll knock your socks off. Always several choices, always 'bespoke.'

They have a shuttle that runs to Highlands, a lovely town with some sophisticated shops and eateries. You can go to the Old Edwards Spa if you like and enjoy all its joys.

In short, if I'm not at home, I'll be at Half-Mile Farm. We already have reservations for my birthday in the spring. Can't wait to roast marshmallows!


Peaceful Perfection

We recently visited Highlands North Carolina for a babymoon trip. It was our first time and it most certainly will not be our last! The Fall Foliage was stunning and our stay at Half-Mile Farm was the icing on the cake. It was the perfect retreat for my wife and I. We loved how it was only a half-mile from downtown but felt so far away :). The front desk staff of Vivian, Carol, and Elizabeth was so gracious to us and wonderful first impressions upon arrival and each new day. The on-site breakfast was wonderful each morning. Thanks Bruce, Conroy, and team for serving us so well! The amenities on property make this place very special. The complimentary evening shuttle to and from downtown is perfect for nightly dinner reservations. The tranquility of the pond on-site in addition to the firepit and fireplaces make for the perfect place for a drink and book reading. We will always remember our first visit to Highlands fondly and we hope to make it back to Half-Mile in the future at Fall Time. Thanks again Half-Mile Farm and staff!

Perfect Fall Getaway October 2023

I have high standards: Clean means hospital clean. Hospitality means graciousness, thoughtfulness ... not sucking up. I've been lucky enough to stay at some iconic places like Raffles in Singapore, so when I say I loved Half-Mile Farm, it meets a high bar. 

The setting is ideal. You can wander the property and unwind. I love the no dogs, no kids, guests-only on the property idea. It's casual, but never sloppy. Everywhere you look is a feast for the eyes. All the sounds are gentle, like a babbling fountain. 

We went on a package and while there were a couple of admin hiccups, everything got sorted. 

The one HUGE hickey in the Old Edwards Inn hospitality universe is their IDIOTIC phone system. I very nearly didn't go as it was impossible to do the simplest thing by phone. 


Genius for relaxing ... 

It's simply beautiful. The remote setting and small room count (28?) makes for a peaceful escape. While it's only a 5 minute drive from Downtown Highlands.

The breakfast is delicious and varies daily, as do the late afternoon Hors d'oeuvres. Not much better than sitting on the porch in a rocker, sipping a drink of your choice, munching on a treat, and looking at the pond.

Service is exceptional with great attention to detail and resolving any issues.

The Bar has a limited selection of food, and does not offer room service, but you can get it to go.

Despite rain 2 of our 3 days there, we will most likely return!

Great Escape!

We stayed at the Old Edwards Inn in Highlands, N.C a few years ago and it became a favorite.  This year we stayed at their Half Mile  Farm  just outside of town.  It was a great place for a Valentine’s getaway.  We were looking for a get away and relax spot and the farm was perfect.  The grounds are beautiful with the lake and gardens-places to sit and relax everywhere from the garden room to the chairs at the lake.  Afternoon refreshments, cookies all day, and a small bar are part of the experience.
     Our room was large with a sitting area and balcony overlooking the mass of rhododendrons. We hope to return in July to see them in bloom.
    The staff is great-Vivian at the desk and Audrey in the bar were welcoming and helpful.  We skipped our dinner in town to visit around the firepit and in the bar with the other guests.  A place not to be missed!

A New Favorite

We needed to get away...2022 was a bust.  We selected Half-Mile as our friends and daughter loved it.  We booked 3 nights in a luxury room with a fireplace and jacuzzi.  It exceeded our expectations!  We now want to go the same time next year and hopefully meet back up with other guests that were also there.  The breakfasts were out of this world and we took one of the mixology classes and had a great time.  They sent out information on things to do in the area and we booked a falconry experience.  AMAZING!!!

Over and Above!

We recently spent a few days at Half-Mile Farm in Highlands, North Carolina.  What a great surprise.  Friends had told us how nice it was but there descriptions fell short of the true beauty and friendliness of this resort.  Incredibly decorated rooms with gas fireplaces, heated flooring in the bathrooms.  Large soaker tubs and showers that had 6 nozzles for full body spray.  As nice as it was the staff made it better.  Friendly and anxious to make sure we enjoyed ourselves.  We'll be back!!

Mountain gem!

My first visit to Half Mile Farm was in 2018 and was for the purpose of a celebration of life for my dad. We rented the Tavern Cabin for our family and friends and Ms. Vivian helped us with the reservation and all of the arrangements. It was the perfect place and I just kept thinking how much my dad would’ve loved it. Everything was perfect and we all fell in love with Half Mile and it has become our place to retreat for comfort and peace. A sense of calm always washes through me as soon as we turn the corner by the fenced garden. Vivian is still there, unless it’s her day off, and then you will be checked in by Carol or another Half Mile “family” member. They are all like family who are there to take care of your every need and each and every time we visit, it feels like was have arrived at “home.”  There is a very strong sense of peace and well-being at Half Mile Farm. The breakfast is always special and is deliciously creative and changes daily. The service is attentive and the vibe is calm and serene. You can leave the resort by complimentary car and travel to downtown Highlands to dine at Madison’s at Old Edwards Inn for a gourmet meal, and believe me it is incredible in every way. Another alternative is to just stay at the Farm and dine at J. Henry’s. The soup. Eat the soup. It is comfort in a bowl. The cheese sandwich is good too. So are the drinks. Pop in the lobby for some hot chocolate and have a cookie or two.  Then go back to your lavish room with lovely linens, balcony, fireplace, heated floor and soaking tub with Milton Brown toiletries.  Sweet dreams. If you’re lucky, wake up tomorrow to do it all over again.

The MOST comfortable place on Earth!

The Inn is beautiful! The lady at the front desk was short with her words  and snappy! She listened to our  private conversations and then acted as though we were complaining. She was very defensive and quick to snap at us with every word we spoke.
