The whole visit totally surpassed our expectations. Our room was large, warm with a really comfy bed that was perfect to lay on and study the incredibly ornate ceiling. The whole building exudes history with beautiful floors, walls and ceilings commensurate with its age. We dined in and thoroughly enjoyed a well thought out, innovative, beautifully presented and incredibly ‘tasty’ dinner. The ‘lady of the house’ does all the work in the kitchen and works so well to bring all the meals for the table out exactly when you would expect, even accommodating our request to delay our desserts so as to allow us more room. After a great nights sleep; ( with the wind and horizontal rain coming straight off the east coast); we enjoyed a wholesome breakfast using local produce, including a home made black pudding that was probably the best I’ve ever tasted. The husband & wife team really do ‘produce the goods’ you won’t be disappointed if you visit.



Superb Sutherland Stay

One night in the Duke of York room including dinner and breakfast. 

Room:  Beautiful medieval room with a small but perfectly adequate en-suite. Stunning ceiling plaster work. And no ghost!

Dinner:  Interesting menu, especially if you like seafood. Delightfully presented and extremely tasty.  If you want cheese to finish it can be pre-ordered. Dining room is cosy and designed primarily for couples.  Arrive promptly!

Breakfast:  A range of cereals plus a cooked selection to follow.  The ‘full English’ was good. 

Staff:  Our host, his wife/chef and staff were lovely. 

Location:  Perfectly situated in the High Street. 

Will we return?  If we get the opportunity, most definitely!

Beautiful room and excellent meals

Outstanding hotel. 
We stayed in the Duke of York room. What can I say? Absolutely stunning, the ceiling is a beauty together with the 16th century window the room is very impressive. Very comfortable bed with sumptuous linen. Great tea/coffee making facilities and a lovely ensuite. 
Key pick was easy. The owners are very helpful and accommodating, nothing was too much trouble. 
Andy was very helpful, polite and courteous. 
The breakfast was very good, I'd definitely advise trying the black pudding! Eggs royale are brilliantly cooked as well. Plenty of tea/ coffee, toast, cereal and orange juice as well. 
If you stay at Sutherland house an evening meal is a must. 
Kinga ,Andy's wife is the chef. After a lovely conversation I discovered she is self taught. The food was truly amazing and well worth the two AA rosettes the restaurant holds. Kinga's skill, dedication and culinary excellence was shown in every plate of beautifully presented food. 
I will definitely be returning, it is without doubt the best short break I have ever had. 
The hotel is a very short walk to the beach and close to all amenities in Southwold. 
Thank you Andy and Kinga for a really lovely weekend.  Definitely a ten out of ten score. 

Outstanding room and restaurant

I booked the Thomas Gummel room for one night. The room was as described except that there were a couple of problems, one being the heating didn’t work.The owner was rather short with me about these problems but did give me my money back.I drove home rather than stayed.It would have been good to have been offered somewhere else to stay although I realise this is not always posssible in Southwold but it would have been nice if someone had tried to help me out.The room apart from the lack of heating and a plumbing fault was ok but small with very draughty single glazed window and right by the entrance door so you could hear everyone coming and going.Go for a more  pricey room if you are staying.A decent apology would have been much appreciated.

Don’t pick the Thomas Gummel room!

Stayed in the John Sutherland Suite ,it was huge like a small apartment quirky and immacutely clean olde worldy with a large modern bathroom. Enjoyed it so much we stayed in for the evening ! p.s. Lounge needs a much bigger TV that aside we loved it..

Delightful Stay

We returned to Sutherland house remembering how great our meal was three years ago and it did not disappoint. The food is fresh and delicious and the service from Andy and the rest of the team was great. Would highly recommend…make sure you book in advance! 

Delicious food and great service

We really enjoyed our stay in this historic 'restaurant with rooms' in the heart of Southwold.  Our room at the top, with its views of the church, its spacious sitting room, and its super clean and modern bathroom was a delight, and contained all of the things we would want in a room - coffee and tea making equipment, fluffy robes and nice toiletries.  Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, with an interesting selection of dishes to choose from.  A shout out for the Suffolk sausages and bacon at breakfast.  And for the friendly owner and his staff, who really go the extra mile to ensure that guests feel welcome.

Quirky and delightful, this is the perfect place from which to explore Southwold

Sometime since we were here, even better. Great atmosphere, shorten menu something for all tastes concise wine list of excellent wines, proprietor front of house but in the back ground, smiling staff a plus, & the best chef in town his wife. Why aren’t there more restaurants like this?

As a couple we stayed in the Earl of Sandwich Room for 2 nights for my Birthday. This  historic and beautiful room was perfect for a special occasion - the bed was huge and extremely comfortable and the bath provided a stand out piece of glamour. All the staff were friendly and attentive and the restaurant food was excellent,  including plant based options. The hotel is situated in a prime location in the centre of Southwold, and although it has no parking there is plenty of free on-street parking nearby - which was available even during half term! 

A fantastic stay at The Sutherland House Hotel, Southwold, Suffolk!

We had an evening meal here which was excellent.   The owners are attentive without being over bearing, and very friendly.  The wife is the chef and came out after we had eaten to check everything was ok.  Cant fault it at all
