We selected this place as we needed somewhere to stay close to Darlington. On arrival we were shown to our room by a friendly member of staff. The room was spotlessly clean and well appointed. The bar area was very welcoming. We had a great night's sleep in the comfortable bed. We pre ordered breakfast, which was ready for the time we requested. The hot breakfast was extremely tasty, and when we asked, we were told everything was bought locally. I would have no hesitation in recommending this place and would certainly go back if we needed to stay in the area.

Great find for a night away

Had a first Xmas day dinner here with family and what a perfect choice we made, the food, service and atmosphere was an absolute 5 star, we will be booking for next Christmas for sure.
Took so much stress out the day for us all xx

Christmas Day 

Group booking for over 20. Once everyone had arrived meals began to be served very quickly & efficiently. Everyone served within a few minutes with a huge selection of meals. Fresh produce, home cooked, nicely presented & generous portions. Friendly courteous staff.  Couldn't fault anything. I will return so will the group. 

Delicious 

This is a lovely pub! We stayed in a beautifully furnished and generously proportioned bedroom. The hosts were very welcoming and we had a great nights sleep. Breakfast this morning was lovely, beautifully cooked and presented! 
We really cannot understand the previous review and fully support the hosts reply as the experience that the previous guests had was totally unlike the lovely visit we enjoyed.
We would not hesitate to visit again if we were in the area!

A great value stay in a lovely pub!

First night my daughter and her baby's room had no heating, offered to sort it, but late and baby asleep. Sorted out heating day after. Mine and my husbands room was freezing, radiator was luke warm and for a large room we could not keep warm. I ended up sleeping in my joggers, tshirt, jumper and socks. Unable to shower as bathroom had no heating in and was freezing cold. Toilet made a ridiculously very loud noise when flushed, never heard anything so noisy. Bed so uncomfortable, springs digging in sides. Pillows were so thin, really cheap. Could hear the people in the next rooms full conversation from 9pm until 12.30am. Complained in morning and explained due to health issues we could not stay for 2 nights, so they offered to change room. The second room was much better, even provided portable radiator. Mattress better, but pillows still very thin. Normal radiator turns off over night, luckily they gave us a plug in one. Could hear noise of the bar below from this room, so no sound insulation in any rooms. WiFi was no good, plus the reception of the small TV in all rooms was terrible, could only get 4 or 5 channels without pictures pixelating. Place looked very tired and run down. Coming from bar to the steep stairs up to the rooms gave off a very damp musty smell. 

It's ashame, as a very lovely old pub side of the business, staff were lovely and food was definitely it's saving grace. Owners were pleasant, but not very welcoming and rarely smiled, didn't look happy in their work. When we arrived door was locked, stood in rain knocking on door and window, tried to call but no answer, but eventually saw the owner through the window and knocked again, she let us in. She told us later the rear door is left open all the time, but not informed before arrival, should be clearly explained so people are not left out in the rain knocking on front door and windows. 

 


Rooms were awful, restaurant food was fabulous.

We stayed the one night and had an evening meal and breakfast here. Portions were huge, beer good. All the staff really friendly and welcoming. We had a room, brought our dog, two main meals, two drinks, two full English breakfasts - £105. Great value

Friendly, full plates and great value for money

Just had the one night here and really enjoyed it. 
Great price, staff pleasant and efficient, alcohol excellent and great price and also the evening meal was excellent as was the full English breakfast the following morning. Decent room would return.

Excellent

We stayed here for 1 night. The room was spacious and comfortable. The food and drinks were very good quality and very reasonably priced.
Breakfast was also excellent and the coffee was the nicest I've ever had. Highly recommend this pub, we will be back!

Enjoyable stay

Hearty welcome on arrival and shown to bright, spacious and comfortable room
overlooking the Green. Excellent meals available in the dining area where a very good breakfast is served. Has to a first choice as a stopover for travellers to the North.

Fabulous time at Chequers Inn. 
Just spent 3 nights there. Rooms were great, the staff were lovely & The food was brilliant too. Can highly recommend this lovely place. We were looked after so well by Kelly, Sue, Adam, Josh, Ben & Richie. Everything was such a good price too.
